The monster hunter games are generally less about the story, most of the charakters don't even have names and just titles like "commander" or handler. the whole premise is in the title: we hunt monsters, collect their body parts and use them to craft equipment, like armor and weapons. that's how it usually goes with some of the "old" franchises, the first monsterhunter game is from 2004 and the series has remained fairly niche until recently with monsterhunter worlds.

Monster hunter world deserved to be the game that popped it off into the public. The attention to detail in the environment and monsters made that game feel flat out alive. Ive been looking to get back into monster hunter now that I've got spare time coming up, and thinking of waiting til 6, but if 6 doesn't expand on that concept, I'm just going to grind world. Rise was fun, but it didn't match up imo.

A big part of Monster Hunter's appeal is not just the cool monsters, but the how they feel like a believable part of the world and the environment. Each of them has their own temperament, hunting habits, their nest that they go back to, etc. They're not just giving you big boss fights, but animals and their habitats

Weapon animations and the move sets around them, the team work involved, who does what in that party. It's probably close to why people love street fighter or other fighting games in that genre. Learning the weapons and the monsters is just amazing, you will get from being scared and trying to survive the monsters to then not being hard up to mastering them. It's like learning a dance. And the monsters design. Is a big part of it, after all a hero is only as good as it's villian.

The idea of the "old warrior" who put his past behind him but has to drag himself out of retirement and remaster his old skillset is actually pretty common in videogames. A lot of the time that's how they justify restarting your character at "level 1" in sequel games, but having a new character in a new game have a similar backstory isn't unheard of, and can be justification for why they don't just completely freak out as the crazy stuff in the game is happening around them.

  • @lohs117
    @lohs117 Жыл бұрын

What you mentioned at the end about your character needing to re-learn skills and spells is a known mechanic; especially in sequels when a character ends really strong in the previous game and they need a reason to weaken them so there can be progression in the next. There are often prologue levels in certain games that start with the character very powerful, but something traumatic happens like a defeat or a timeskip that renders them weak again. I know that is a thing in the first Witcher game for example

  • @genHawkeye
    @genHawkeye Жыл бұрын

You are 100% correct in that the trope of a character "relearning" abilities as time goes on is very common in video games. in some game series its as you described where the character relearns/remembers "oh ya i can do X" or sometimes its the scenario where something happens to the hero in where they lose all their abilities and powers and then gain them back as the game progresses

The Monster Hunter series is probably one of the best examples of a tight gameplay loop. You gather materials to craft bait and traps to hunt monsters, which gets you rewards in the form of currency or new materials, which you use to upgrade your weapons and armor and get new abilities, which you use to go back out there and hunt bigger and bigger monsters. Other than "looking cool", there isn't really a reward other than getting to fight new monsters. So far, my experience has been that each game's "story" is mostly just a vehicle to get players through the tutorial. After that, continuing is a matter of enjoying the challenge or wanting bragging rights among your friends and the community for killing a certain monster.

Monster Hunter is really weird because there’s so much atmosphere and worldbuilding in it and it’s all built off of about a paragraph of lore. The core draw to the games is mastery. You hunt a monster to get materials, most likely fail a few times in the process, but you yourself get better at reading the monster, understanding them, and what goes from a struggle against a force of nature becomes a dance between equals. Also hehe big monster If you want to learn a bit more, SugarPunch and PunkDuck here on KZread made videos about the appeal of MonHun. (PunkDuck ‘s video is a little crass but he nails the appeal)

Monster Hunter World was honestly one of the greatest game experiences I've had since Halo Reach and some eras of Destiny. The way you have to size up each monster in a badass cutscene before squaring off against it, the way you have to know your weapon and your target inside and out to reach the flow state you need to take it down, the SOS flares to bring a bunch of fellow morons to wordlessly agree on how to take it down, it was legendary. That's the kind of shit you spend ages trying to recapture.

the best part about monster hunter besides the gameplay is the lore/story what makes it great is that it tends to leave a lot to the imagination so the players can fill in the blanks themselves like take the Artians/Ancients for example it is known that they were morally gray to say the least(they literally built a massive tower out of Kushala bones and scales so it can serve as a massive middle finger to mother nature) and that they were wiped out by White Fatalis 1000+ years ago(it can't be Blue Fatalis Black Fatalis or Red Fatalis because Blue Fatalis is a myth the Black Fatalis subspecies originates from another universe and only arrived 100 years before the events of monster hunter 1 and Red Fatalis is just a Black Fatalis that is too angry to die) after they crossed the line with something called "the forbidden act" but there is no explanation as to what this "forbidden act" is(the closest we got is an in-universe myth and cryptid which started out as a scrapped story concept and an unused monster design... which is a very cool use of cut/unused content) and "the poet clad in red"/"the scarlet mystery man"/"the guild founder"/"totally not dante"/"how many nicknames does this man have?"(who is speculated to be the last Artian) is certainly not going to tell us

Trust me; the 'World' trailers you watched barely scratched the surface of what was in that game. Most of the series up until that point was either on the PS2 or 3DS, so the announcement trailer was more showing off some of the next-gen features. All of them have some great monster fights, though, so I'd recommend looking at all the trailers and cinematics you can find and/or playing the games yourself. Those two are the most recent, but if you don't have a 3ds, there's a Switch entry called MH Generations Ultimate that gives you a good idea of what classic Monster Hunter was like.

basically the appeal of this game (at least for me) it's the progression. you start the game like nobody, but we prey the monsters (oh no need to worry, the guild, organizations that hunter work for keep the numerous of the monster on sight for purpose so they don't go extinction), now that we prey the bottom of food chain we start our rise to the top as alpha predator. oh and approve more monster hunter, this is one of my favorites franchises

Monster Hunter is a simple series with creative monster designs and a focus on 4 player co-op (if you play solo you get 1 or 2 animal buddies to help you in place of other players) the series can get challenging, particularly in the game expansions like Iceborne is to World. The story can be usually explained like this for all games: Elder Dragons are the name given to monsters so powerful that they can change the ecological balance of the area resulting in lesser monsters moving out of their particular habitat and causing problems.

The last was for Monster Hunter Worlds expansion Iceborne, it fokussed in on that games "antagonist" the Velkhana.

One interesting thing about Monster Hunter's story is that is heavily leans into the "Man vs. Nature" trope but in a positive way, especially the later entries. The reasoning given for hunting the monsters is usually because they've started attacking people in some way, and they're always conscious about the ecology and aren't just hunting things to extinction (There's a bit of dissonance because the game requires you to replay hunts to get materials but it's kind of treated like the repeats never happened). The side effect is that all the conflict comes from monsters, and humans & allied non-humans all get along and treat each other well because they're in this together. They even noted this in a crossover with The Witcher where Geralt gets pulled into the monster hunter universe and is surprised because all the people are super friendly and not prejudiced.

Recording streams is often a way that gaming channels "double dip" content. Sometimes, the stream highlights are trimmed down into a carefully edited video (maybe even creating a narrative that didn't occur in reality). Sometimes, just notable reactions are uploaded. Sometimes, creators use their stream clips for B-roll or to reference events and experiences while making reviews or video essays. In general, it's not a _bad_ thing to have a recording of yourself playing a game. The only reason not to is if you don't feel like dealing with the pressure of performing for the camera or trying to engage your audience (which are both perfectly respectable; we all need breaks from time to time).

Monster Hunter is a series of games that are set on the same planet, but have different story paths depending on what games you play. The videos you watched were for two different game paths. One is Monster Hunter World, which includes the DLC game Monster Hunter World: Iceborne (it is essentially as big as a new game, but you need the previous game to play it). The other is Monster Hunter Rise (the trailer in the middle - along with its DLC, Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak). Think of it like the Tolkien Middle Earth books. Some are named as part of their chain (the lord of the rings trilogy), and some are stand alone (the silmarillion). In Monster Hunter, there are these monstrous beasts everywhere, and humans have adapted to hunt them for materials/food, or study them for steampunk style scientific reasons. It's not so much hunting poor creatures, so much as "one of us is about to eat the other one". In the scope of the game, the player makes a character to fight the monster, collecting their body parts to create more powerful weapons, armour, and food buffs, to fight tougher monster and progress the stories There was also a movie that came out starring Tony Jaa and Milla Jovovich by Paul WS Anderson (of Resident Evil fame), though it was apparently released during the pandemic and I for one didn't even know it had even come out at all yet.

Monster Hunter World was my first introduction into the series and was the game that made me fall in love with it ❤ I highly recommend! I do agree that it has a learning curve being more reflex based combat, but mhw is a very good introduction. It also supports taking things at your own pace. There is always such an appeal to massive monsters of amazing design, but what I love of this game is they made a truly living world with them. Being human in this world, it makes sense that you hunt these creatures: being your source of food, hides or scales for your very armour and bones to build your homes. If there is a threat to your homestead, you take up the mantle to fight these giants and forge your place in this intense ecosystem. Primal and blood pumping. But also the game has a sense of charming humour and has cat chefs that cook the most delicious food 😂 The trailers were very limited, yes, but if you want to watch more videos before trying the game look up “monster intros” for small (and I think) spoiler free glimpses at the game. If you do try it out, HAPPY HUNTING! :D

Since I've put WAY too much time into Monster Hunter over the years I feel I'm qualified to give a brief rundown of things. Monster Hunter as a series boils down to there's a monster causing trouble, go hunt the monster to restore peace/balance to the area, use the monster you hunted to make new gear to help you in your future hunts. The aspect that doesn't come off as easily is that these monster are not rampaging pillaging magical demons and such, they're just animals and either something has upset them or cause a disturbance in the area angering them. The games do a TON to establish this ecosystem. What does this monster do, what does it eat, how does it live, it's position in the ecosystem and such with World and Iceborne games doing an especially good job in this regard. There's a real respect for nature and ecosystems in the game, it's not about just mindlessly hunting things (usually) from a story perspective. There's also TONS of world building and lore stuff, but it's not really show ingame that well as there's mostly just quest descriptions that can give hints to it and concept/art books that tell more about it.

MHW would be in my top 3 favourite PS4-era games. The plot is wafer thin, but the gameplay more than makes up for it. You also don't have to kill most of the monsters, and you get better rewards if you weaken and capture them instead. Each kill/capture rewards you with monster parts that are used to forge better weapons and gear, which in turn allows you to face bigger and tougher monsters. Each weapon class has it's own unique playstyle, and each monster has a natural elemental affinity(fire, water, ice, electricity, dragon); you mix and match weapons and armour to gain an edge over your target and take it down (ie Water imbued weapons and fire resistant armour to take on the Anjanath, that T-Rex with the big nose and little wings). I dropped +500hrs on the game and then lost my save file, and have since played another +800hrs, and I still haven't finished it. Might need to return to it soon and finally kill the Fatalis (the final monster, a giant black dragon). Also, Insect Glaive FTW! (Hunters will know what I'm talking about)

So fotr TLOU it's not that the second game had a plot planned post first game, the second game was actually based on an idea that was essentially discarded at the start with the cross country revenge tale. That was what the prologue with the stolen guns was a super condensed versioin of but the story with Joel and Elly was the idea that won out. It was mostly abandoned because it was considered beyond inane for someone or a group of someone's to spend a year traversing the hellish world just to kill one guy for ripping you off.

First and foremost, welcome to the community. With the pleasantries out of the way, please be warned - If you are JUST NOW getting into games as an adult, tread carefully. Trying games out this late CAN lead to addiction due to it being such massive joy; ESPECIALLY now with all the technological advancements.

The story for all Monster Hunter games is basically a super powerful monster is causing an ecological problem, go kill weaker monsters and make gear from their bodies until you can kill the big one to fix it, but the story is very much secondary to hunting monsters and making cool weapons and armor from their bodies

Monster Hunter is all about the crazyness of the creatures and this weird world youre thrust into. This series was first started in 2004 on the ps2 and it evolved throughout the years but allways stayed kinda niche, untill Monster Hunter World released in 2018 wich boosted the franchise into mass appeal since then it has become the best selling franchise for Capcom (prolithic japanese game company also behind titles like Resident Evil, Megaman, Devil May Cry, Streetfighter and many more) both Monster Hunter World/Iceborne and Rise/Sunbreak have topped the charts and grown the fanbase to larger sizes than ever before. Both games youve seen today are great (even though i personally prefer the Older ones specifically the ones with the "Ultimate" subtitle), but they are pretty different from one another Monster Hunter World/Iceborne is a bit more realistic and focussed on simulating the ecosystem it takes place in. Rise/ Sunbreak is all about combat and over the top crazyness, this game goes bonkers. If youre looking for story then Monster Hunter is not really the right place to look, if youre a hardcore lore enthusiast like me who looks way to deep into minute details or someone who analyzes overarching themes, then you might be able to get something out of it. But the main story of the games is typically not that special, it usually goes somewhat like this: "what [event that shakes up the ecosystem] is happening? Now all the monsters go crazy, we gotta find whats doing this and stop it!" Sometimes there is more to it (MH4Ultimate was about the spread and eventual containment of a continent wide epidemic of "The Frenzy" wich is basically ultra Rabeez wich is pretty bad in a world where the average wildlife is the size of a cement truck and breathes fire). Its all more about the gameplay and the immersion in this world rather than a typical story.

Congratulations on the gaming graduation! Also yeah, the game's focus is more on the environment and the awesomeness of the monsters. Regarding the story of MH:W, Maxxor's parody review of Monster Hunter World is ironically the best option i am aware of, but i think it's fair to say his editing style would give Hannah a headache. If you want an in-depth yet funny breakdown of how the gameplay of Monster Hunter actually feels, i would recommend reacting to: - "How To Monster Hunter" by Punk Duck or Scott Falco's "Monster Hunter World with a side of salt" As for the meta history of the game series, SuperRAD's "A Complete History of Monster Hunter" is a long form compilation video that explores the entire history of the franchise. Regarding ideas for future reactions, have you seen any of the Darkest Dungeon trailers?

Typically the video game market is such a harsh and competitive environment that studios can't plan for a sequel. Very often a studio will go bankrupt if their game isn't a success so you really have to deliver a product that stands on it's own. Once you have established a series then you can start planning for sequels. (for reference see Assassins Creed where the story left open the possability of a sequel but also enough loose end were tied up to not require a sequel vs. Assassins Creed 2 with which they started a whole trilogy for one character)

Monster Hunter is such a fun franchise that I wish more people get into, especially since recent entries have been more accessible. Also, don't expect any good story for MH. Like old action movies, you don't play MH for it's story. The story is there just to make you hunt stuff. The main meat of the game is the gameplay loop. But the lore is pretty cool. Especially around each monsters, the ecology and so on. Also, finish the Last of Uss franchise 1st before moving onto God of War.

Pleaseeeeeee watch the monster intros for monster hunter world, iceborne, rise and sunbreak. Maybe split it into 4 but it shows off the monsters in a really cool light. Plus the fact that each has their own ecology and behaviour is such a fun aspect of these games. As someone who loves stories and creature design id say this series is amazing.

Even though I've been too busy to catch your streams I'm so happy you've finally joined us as a gamer, congrats! Super glad you enjoyed The Last of Us and I'm definitely checking out the vods later; if I had to say what you should do next, if you want to continue the story immediately go for the sequel. I personally didn't play it due to the controversy around it but that's just a me thing. I'd totally be down to watch you play God of War, I only recommend you play the first one before Ragnarok since the latter is a continuation of the story of the former. At the end of the day, do what you feel like doing, it's you enjoyment at the end of the day, and trust and believe we'll enjoy watching you enjoy it. And finally, Monster Hunter is such a fun series but it puts more emphasis on gameplay over story but rest assured, there IS a story!

Id definitely like to see you look at some of the Monster Hunter monster reveals given your interest. The game actually takes place over several ecological locations bes8des the desert and the designs reflect that. Unfortunately the game also suffers from overall asset reuse as there can be several subspecies of some monsters. Its a cool game mechanic as they behave differently, but simply viewing them is lackluster as you'll main notice, say, a difference in scale color.

Ah yes. Monster hunter. Or as I like to call it: Monster demolition simulator. What it lacks in story it makes it up with fun Combat and MANY MANY different monsters. You got Giant fire breathing dinosaurs, Electricity charged Wolfs and even Elsa herselve. The variety is endless and so is it's lore. The weapons are unique as well. Bullet, blade, arrow and blunt collide to make the 14 weapons. Each has its own style. It doesn't matter what weapon or skill is best. It's about what you are most comfortable with and fits your style. These games involve alot of preparation and a mindful eye. Even for veterans like me you can always learn something new. Even after 100 hours of play. It's progression system? Easy. Slah or bonk big mean lizzard, either kill it or capture it. Make weapons and armor from said monster. Go kill bigger and badder monster. Eventually you get to monsters known as *Elder dragons*. The highest in the food chain most of the time. If you plan on playing it I suggest you start either with Rise or World. Both are very beginner friendly. Congratulations on the Gamer graduation! Have a wonderful day!

Monster Hunter: World is wonderful and a lot easier to get started in then the earlier entries. There is a story, but mostly its about hunting monsters and then getting materials from the monsters to craft more weapons(most of which are huge!) and outfits. Some of the outfits are...different. Just look up Kirin Alpha outfit, you'll understand.

The TL;DR of why you are fighting monsters in Monster Hunter (not really a spoiler, since the games don't focus _too_ heavily on this and drops it on you at the very start of all the games anyways): Essentially, each game starts off with you being a newbie "hunter." Hunters are the pest/animal control of the game series. You are basically paid to deal with monsters that are bothering people. The level of "bothering" ranges from someone being jealous that a monster couple have a better relationship than theirs to monsters literally endangering towns and even entire ecosystems. And that is mostly the premise of the series. The later parts of the games are also notorious for needing a lot of time investment to grind resources, so keep that in mind if you ever want to pick up the series.

The story of Monster Hunter has always been on the more rudimentary side. In essence, it's usually just about growing as a hunter, learning to combat increasingly powerful creatures which you can then carve up and turn into increasingly powerful equipment, and then there's usually some weirdness afoot related to a particular monster that you end up having to investigate because it poses a threat to the ecosystem or your local village, and then you kill it, and then it typically turns out you were after the wrong monster and there's something much nastier and more powerful that needs to be stopped. The story is more about setting and world building than an actual plot, but of course, it's more about gameplay than about story to begin with.

Monster hunter is a rinse and repeat game, but in a good way, it's fun to learn and improve your skills while playing and the story it's a aexcuse to just hunt monsters there is a reason why we hunt them btw it's not just because we want to they are ether disturbing farms or some times they are in the way of a caravan or something so we do have to ether capture or hunt them it's a very fun and interesting series I 100% would give it a try I would say Starr with world because rise is a more arcade experience and maybe your not in to that for now

I would say give the monster hunter games a try. Mostly the hunting of monsters in the games are, canonically, done as a means to prevent the monsters from harming the members of the hunters' community. But that's just the canon reason the hunts exist.

Well, given you have expressed a clear love of heavy narrative I would think maybe the Uncharted series, The Witcher 2 and/or 3, Or (cautiously recommended due to the possibility of getting hopelessly sucked in) Final Fantasy XIV's trial. All of which are available on PS5 iirc.

MHWorld and its dlc Iceborne are very different from MHRise and Sunbreak. Fundamentals are the same but World Iceborne are much more heavy and “realistic” while Rise Sunbreak is noticeably faster, flashier, and more anime inspired. The main selling point is satisfying combat with slow and methodical positioning using any of the 14 different weapon types. The most important thing to remember is that monsters are not evil demons or beasts of chaos, they are for the most part big animals. They have behavioural patterns and innate instincts and biological functions that you can learn and exploit during a hunt to help bring it down. While you do harvest creatures for resources to make new weapons, armour, and gear, you as a Hunter never level up. You grow stronger by learning how to be effective at Hunting, recognizing patterns, and becoming one with your chosen weapons to flow in an elegant dance between man and beast. Find your place in nature in a culture built around danger. Also your primary companion is a sometimes mute cat that stands and walks around that you can dress in little clothes. There is also Dogs in Rise that don’t talk but can be dressed in clothes and also ridden.

you might not like this game due to somewhat graphic detail of wounding the monsters, you break off horns and slice off tails etc and they start to limp and even try to crawl away from you as they get weaker and weaker etc. Its often said that the name is actually Monster Hunter as in you are the "monster that hunts" as the game a lot of the time you the creatures your hunting are just going about their day to day lives before you turn up but hey when you need their hides or bones to make a nice new set of Armor or weapon then... XD. Its a great series that punishes just rushing in and trying to button mash but rewards those that are observant as every single attack has tells in body movements or sounds which once you learn them can turn a battle into a sort of dance. a good example is the is a certain monster that can breath lighting but it has two very different breath attack that are unleased from the same attack animation - they basically dig in and take a very deep breath, but you can tell what attack is coming by listening for a whistling sound as it breathes in. if you hear it then its going to use the lighting ball attack so you need to quickly make room as the ball is quite large but if you don't then its going to use the beam breath with means you can use the time to close the gap as the beam has much smaller attack area but takes a bit longer to finish meaning that the monster is defenceless from the sides/back during etc. plot wise the games tend to very quite light with often more of an overarching theme - like in Monster Hunter World your character is part of the 5th wave of explores to a new continents and has meant to have already made quite the name for themselves in the Hunters Guild of their homeland. The Trailer of rise pretty much tells you the whole point of the story - every so many years the monster in your homeland (which was a new region in the games series as well) go into a rampage and your character is a young hunter that is trying to protect the village.

I give it about 5% chance that TLOU 2 story had even a though put into it when they were making the first game and its story is kinda bad compared to first and regarding which game you should play next, GOW (2018) and GOW Ragnarok are great games and they get my vote (please dont put the game on the "story" (easiest) difficulty unless you cant beat a boss without it, since it removes most of the gameplay actions)
