New food delivery worker protections take effect in NYC

The people who bring us restaurant meals and other items fought for better working conditions. CBS2's Elijah Westbrook has more on the changes.

@@theo21021 Well you're probably right about some people avoiding certain neighborhoods. But who knows yet what that number can and will be. My point was that I've done delivery apps in the past in NYC (Postmates) and I know for a fact that they did not give you the delivery point until you actually picked up the order at the restaurant. Then if it's so far away and you have no choice but to cancel it because it's so far away, the app would log you off automatically for declining an order you already accepted and picked up. There's no incentive in doing some of these deliveries.

Those tips are not locked in and guaranteed so that is worthless to put into effect and does nothing. Half the time you deliver the food and the tip is changed because the customer entices the driver with big tips but then they change it to next to nothing. They should not allow the tip to be changed unless they give customer service a plausible and believable reason why they no longer want to pay the initial tip amount or the company needs to pay what the tip was promised.

Let me share a story, I live in LA. In early 2019 I was doing food deliveries on my bike. I got a delivery from a restaurant on Sunset Blvd at around 10pm. It was a slow night and I was desperate so I took the order despite being a few miles away from the pick up, the worst was yet to come. I wish the app would tell you where you are going and for how much. Once I confirmed with the app that I had the food in my possession it gave me the address. It sent me four miles up Laurel Canyon. If you're not familiar with LA, that's a suicide mission on a bicycle. I don't know why I still did it, me today would have been like screw these a$$holes I'm keeping the food and going home. Laurel Canyon is a tiny two lane road with all kinds of twists and turns with cars going up and down at insane speeds. I was pist off that the algorithm or whatever didn't forward this order to someone with a car. Accepting that order was one of the stupidest things I've ever done, it could have gotten me killed, drivers were zipping past honking their horns and yelling at me to get off the road literally yelling "you're gonna get yourself killed you idiot!" Needless to say, this should have happened from the get go.

As a PT courier for multiple services, picking up and dropping off food orders is not hard. Majority of the time, they are talking on phone, listening to music or even smoking weed while in transit. Regular jobs you aren't typically able to do that. Also the apps don't give 4 mile deliveries. They can have you go 20 blocks but you can take a bike, bus, subway, or more. Grabbing an unlimited metrocard can shoot you anywhere with a short walk when you get off. They choose to bike in the end to 'save money' while spending more than that on other things....esp drugs. Also don't forget many of them live with females who claim to be a single parent collecting welfare while these individuals don't pay rent like regular folks. The hardest working couriers are grocery ones who actually shop, bag and deliver (usually by car) to a residence then some entitled customer makes them carry it up 4-5 flights of steps without meeting them downstairs...then tips none or very little.
