I don't think anyone HATES Stormblood. Being the least loved of the FFXIV expansions still puts you above most games.

Indeed, it isn't BAD, it's less-liked. It has certain narrative shortcomings which at least IMO are more than made up for by its gameplay improvements. The one that people appear to most often forget nowadays was the big job and combat system overhaul, as it is still in place today and thus people coming in after it have nothing to compare it to.

True, Stormblood isn't *bad* story-wise. It's just not as good as Heavensward, and being massively overshadowed by Shadowbringers and Endwalker. But it's still pretty decent and definitely sets up some very important events and characters. Can't speak to the combat and content improvements really, I started playing in ShB.

I don't think anyone will dispute that the Ruby Sea is probably the most boring zone in the entire game and is quite capable of filtering people who loved the game up to that point.

@@providencebreaker1558 To me, the Ruby Sea feels like they accidentally made a promise for an underwater kingdom in the Trailer, before they had solidified the entire scope of the expansion and then were forced to work it in somehow. Same with those ruins in the La Hee, if you know what I mean. Don't want to spoil.

"Inscriptions... ?" I know I pointed it out to you, but it's just the hidden Square Enix logo 😂 The text on the map reads "Ala Mhigo" for the first section (with the Warrior of Light and Lyse fight on the statue), "Garlemald", "Othard" (the big area), "Doma" (the small area on the continent near where the scene went underwater), and "Kugane", the city shown where the WoL is a Samurai. These are the significant points in the expansion! The underwater spot was SE teasing everyone about being able to swim underwater. This trailer is less cinematic than the HW and ShB trailer. Once you get to ShB, you're gonna be *really* looking for some hidden lore/secrets in the trailer. Will be quite the video.

You've no doubt noticed that a lot of stuff has been teased, but nothing spoiled like in the HW trailer. They learned their lesson, at least on that. This expansion also marked the end of support for the PS3, so the new zones will start taking advantage of this and will give you a lot to look forward to.

Unpopular opinion: Lyse is an amazing character. I adore her. I loved her as Yda and I love her as Lyse. Stormblood may not be my favorite expansion, but it is still awesome and better than ARR (maybe equal to ARR patches), imo of course. I love so many things about it even while being able to critique its weaknesses. I can't say more without spoilery context, but I'm sure you will come to your own conclusions and opinions without any of our help. lol

IMO Stormblood's biggest issue is its pacing. There are some sections that seem to drag. But as others have said before me, it's a decent expansion, it's just book-ended between a 9/10 Heavensward and an 11/10 Shadowbringers, so it gets overshadowed. I think you'll still enjoy it, it's got a ton of great moments! Looking forward to the playthrough!

the thing about SB is that it it really felt like 2 expansions crammed into one. a lot of the negativity it got was the result of the instance servers melting during the Early access, because the devs vastly underestimated how many players would preorder SB

  • @Rc3651

This trailer is good but I think they regretted having so many story spoilers in the Heavensward trailer. Which would auto play if you idled at the title menu -- imagine playing through ARR, getting some snacks, and coming back to see the Sultana die. The community had to strongly warn new players to avoid watching it early. So they had basically nothing story related in this trailer, which I think went too far. It ends up kind of being a regular trailer showing environments / visual themes. Nothing to really hook you, whereas some of the other trailers can make me cry haha Also Stormblood has a bit of a slower start, there's lots more world building, but that world building is crucial going forward. And it does pick up a lot as it goes!

A lot of other people in these comments have already said what I would say (pacing was the biggest issue, but it's still a great expansion - just suffers from "middle sibling syndrome" since it's seated between Heavensward & Shadowbringers). That being said, rewatching this alongside you, I could not stop grinning! This is still a beautiful trailer!! Lyse is finally stepping into the limelight! The new places are super cool! Also I think ultimately what you get out of this expansion just depends on you. One of my friends says that this is his favorite expansion because it fits best with his character's arc, so he was very invested in it. Hope you enjoy!

  • @markup6394

True that: Unlike the other cinematics, that all tell a story somehow of how you got there and why, Stormblood is more of an excursion. Think of how hyped people when they finally got to see not only Ala Mhigo but an entire new continent - not to mention that underwater dome (yes, you'll get there :D ) and this banger of a soundtrack. And then, after its first reveal, Yoshida taking the stage, wearing that cool Samurai armor :D I dont think, anyone hates Stormblood. It just falls short compared to HW and especially Shadowbringers. However, Stormblood has in part some of the cooles story lines to boot and their dungeons and raids are still some of the best in the entire game to this day. Its also where SE found their own game: all jobs got seriously reworks, they now knew what kind of game they were making - and not an offshoot of WoW anymore.

Just like with Heavensward's opening showing off the Manacutters implied that flying had come to XIV, Stormblood's opening implied that swimming had finally come to XIV, hence the shot of the underwater city. Also RIP the PlayStation 3. Stormblood doesn't really get too deep into what ditching the PlayStation 3 could do for the game, but you can certainly feel it when you go through the new areas...

Stormblood is a pretty good expansion overall - despite suffering from some pacing issues. It just had the misfortune to come after Heavensward and before Shadowbringers and Endwalker, and it doesn't quite measure up to those (which is not something that disparages Stormblood - the vast majority of full games would have a damn hard time to measure up to them, too)

Stormblood has what I call Heroes (of Might and Magic) 4 problem. 3 was incredible, and is still classic today. 5 was such a different game (being 3D and all that) it's judged on it's own merrit. Heroes 4 is just remembered as "that game that wasn't Heroes 3."

Hate is likely a strong word for how people feel about Stormblood. It had 2 crimes against it. The first (and only legitimate one) is that its very chonky until you get past the Ruby sea. Then it smooths out and feels better. The second being that it was sandwiched by the xpac that people first fell truly in love with the game for (HW) and one of the greatest bit of story we've gotten to experience (ShB). Its a shame, because it does most of what heavensward did, but better. But because HW rides on that nostalgia, it gets overlooked. Which, as much as I love HW, is a bit a shame. ^^'

Now that I think about it, it's actually similar to the ARR trailer. Not the part with Meteor, as that was actually the final scene of 1.0, but the part after that showed random people on chocobos and the WoLs appearing in the woods and showcased things like Behemoth. That was the trailer when 2.0 was about to be released.
