    I'm not a fireman, ever fought a fire nor am I criticizing these fireman because I do NOT have the knowledge to do so... But I have to ask a question and it may sound stupid to fire fighters but it is only a question, is there a policy against opening the driver's side door, if it is unlocked, as in this case and just pull the lever that opens up the engine hood BEFORE trying to open up the engine hood with a pry bar that probably jammed the hood mechanism from opening for well over 2 minutes???

    if you do so you still have to use your hand to unlatch the hood, are you ganna place your gloved hand on a 900 degree latch?

    Normally the hood latch mechanism is made of aluminum so it is very quick to melt and become useless on working engine compartment fires like this....Pry Bar is about the only choice.

    Must say great job showing the rookie some nozzel work, just keep that nozzel out more in front of you. Also awesome job to almost the entire crew having masks. Lets remember guys that car fires have some of highest levels of toxins. Be careful too getting in front, you should attach the fire from the side initially because those bumpers can fly at you and hurt you. But overall, one of the better videos i've seen

    Isnt that why they have the power saws, to cut open the hood... Instead of wastin 5 minutes trying to force it??

  • @bluecollarcanuck

    They wouldn't want to generate more sparks around a scene where there are highly volatile materials involved, esp. after they'd just knocked most of it down. My question is, why'd they have 3 trucks respond for a single vehicle?

  • @KomplexMatr1

    @KomplexMatr1

    ***** I seriously doubt that is the reason they didnt use a saw.... Were they afraid they would catch something on fire?? They probably were using the bar because it was quicker to deploy, and you can gain enough of a purchase with the bar to get water into the engine compartment which appears to be where the fire is.

    That's not quite what I meant. Power tools aren't really justified in vehicle fires, unless there's someone trapped inside. Standard operating procedure is just to pry the hood up once the flames are knocked down, disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts, sparking hazards, and finish extinguishing whatever's left.

  • @KomplexMatr1

    @KomplexMatr1

    ***** You can't really generalize what standard operating procedure is for everyone... Thats a very blanket statement to make. That may be your SOP for your dept. But we absolutely teach and use rescue saws for vehicle fires. A triangle cut isolating the hood latch can get you into a hood in seconds, you can also attack the hinges with a saw and fold the hood back over. The fact of the matter is that we as firefighters have a lot of tools in our toolbox and a lot of variations in SOPs. To over generalize like that is something that needs to be considered when making those kinds of statements.

    Every time, why is it so difficult to open a hood ? Take an ax if necessary. The car is already a total loss. Every car on fire… the same problem ! They guzzle with wrenches as a game...
