Im so happy to hear about the palace theatres. One is converted into a church. The lady that leads the church is popular, l cannot recall her name. She has hundreds of old/ancient bibles that fill up the beautiful lobby. L.A. was very ornate & fancy. My grandparents told stories of long walks downtown wearing their fur wraps, and tuxedos while heading to the b/w movies. And the sidewalks had purple square lights built in to the side walk. You can still see them on 7th St, while heading towards "Skid-Row".....

A missed exclusive-to-LA foodie opportunity to give a shout out in the footage of Cassell’s across the street from Freehand. Chef David Chang raves the patty melt as the best he’s ever had. And the burger is in the running as one of the best in LA, even as the Shake Shack chain is a few doors down. Also, LOL at the Chevy Volt at 5:57 driving on the wrong side of the street.

@@joefisher1972 There is no need to feel unsafe in DTLA Joseph. During the day and early evening - you'll be fine. As in any big city...pay attention, be aware. Should you visit Skid Row? NO! Is DTLA unsightly? Yes. Is it decrepit? Yes. Are there better areas than others...yes...around the Music Center, for instance, and around The Broad (pronounced "brode") Museum is much nicer than the area near the Movie Palaces on Broadway. And I would recommend seeing The Public Library, and certainly visit Little Tokyo! and The Last Bookstore. You should see Union Station and have a meal at Philippe - The Original French Dip. And pay a visit to the L.A. Cathedral. I have no religious affiliation whatsoever but the place is an amazement. Beautiful. It's really a shame that DTLA is so blown out. It cries out for gentrification. And in no other instance would I call for gentrification - in no other city - I hate it generally - but DTLA is in dire need of attention. It's coming up slowly. I give it another 10 years. If I were visiting L.A. I would stay in Santa Monica at The Ambrose or in one of the hotels near Sunset and La Cienega. And I would visit Hollywood Forever...another must-see! And The Beijing Pie House in Monterey Park... Check this out: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZYqNl8-YfZfLkc4.html

@@cgtravers Santa Monica is ok but I found it to be tourist trappy and not much history and no cultural amenities. Plus the beach sucks. I'm into history, cultural amenities, architecture and great food and that's what DTLA has. More construction, the fastest growing area in the region. The public transportation hub of the region. The biggest employment center in the region. Nightlife, great restaurants, growing shopping scene. Downtown is sizzling hot right now and only getting better.

Born in 1948, I grew up in various parts the LA area through the '50s and '60s. I vividly remember as a child wondering at the streetcars and their tracks and overhead electrical lines. I remember marveling at the magnificent art deco, black-and-gold Richfield building, whose destruction seemed shocking to me. In 1966-1967, I commuted by bus between West Covina and UCLA. Since I changed busses downtown, this gave me the opportunity of viewing all those wonderful old buildings at my leisure. Anyway, I thought of them as very old, although at that time they were really still comparatively young. I saw some movies in one of those grand old theaters. I remember rooting for DTLA to become a more vital and alive place, because at the time it was a bit on the shabby side. Although I now live in Washington state, I find it very gratifying to see the old place waking up and to see not only lots of new construction and revitalization but also the refurbishing of some of those great old buildings that were the backdrop for so many gritty films noirs. My youthful dream is finally being realized!

This video barely skimmed the surface of what you can do in the new Downtown Los Angeles.... You Like Blade Runner? Than you have to see the Bradbury Building. I'm guessing you could plan a 2-3 night visit in DTLA... and I'm glad Brigham Yen was a guest because there are very few people as passionate about DTLA as he is. Thanks for the video.

Very enjoyable tour of DTLA. Chris: Brigham, tell us a little bit about Broadway. Brigham breaks into song: ♫ They say the neon lights are bright on Broadway (on Broadway) They say there's always magic in the air (on Broadway) ♫ Sorry, couldn't resist.

So for the Wilshire Grand Hotel, going up to the hotel lobby deck is completely free? Like how does that work being able to go up there? Just take an elevator up the floor and you’re able to see the views even if you aren’t staying at the hotel?

The renaissance hasn't had a lot of cohesion, so its hard to feel the overall improvement! This is why it feels like, a new hotel/condo here, a new restaurant or supermarket there! There needs to be something, that brings it altogether!

I think it will slowly improve in the coming decade as new shelters and service and affordable homes are built. But rather than concentrating a majority of homeless in the Downtown/Skid Row, it will decentralize and disperse the homeless throughout the city and county. This should help Downtown revitalize in the long run but also help with those in Skid Row by getting many people help. There will always be sizable population still that dont want help, dont want shelter and are fine to be outside in a tent in a section of the city that is industrial warehouses. But maybe it can shrink the Skid Row area to a more manageable area like the size of SF tenderloin. rather than the less than 1 square mile that it is now.

You’ve done a lot of LA/SD video guides, and while they’re all good I’m surprised you still haven’t done guides for the Inland Empire (I’m a native), Coachella Valley or the High Desert. Not as much to do in LA/SD, but enough landmarks, tourist spots and restaurants to make videos of.

Dtla on the come up. Our only problem is the homeless, they have to find a solution that helps them and just doesn’t kick them out. Otherwise Arts district, Lil Tokyo, Dtla... probably 4-5 days to explore the area or more, so many restaurants, coffee, bars, shopping, events, and more things to do. But LA is expensive, so don’t think you’re gonna do all that for cheap. Most people in LA don’t have the money to live in dtla lol. Great video.
