Hi Aquamigos! In this video I planned out and designed how I am going to build my DIY double trash can pond filter and I made a rendering of what it will look like in Photoshop. Let me know what you think!

Excellent work fish fam! Lookin good on the filter. You are going to get a lot of heavier waste in the first can which will build up heavily over time and need to be cleaned out so you might want to install a drain at the bottom so you can flush it out from time to time. You'll still need to take all the lava rock out and clean it a bit but not as much. When you do clean the rock you could use a seperate bucket of pond water so you keep all that good bacteria and don't kill it with tap/city water that uses a lot of chemical. I think you may have mentioned you have a well? If so is there any filtration? Does the filtration system use any chemical? If not you're probably fine using that water to clean the rock. In the second can you may want to use bio balls and airate the water using a large bubbler. This will help break down any solid waste that may have entered the 2nd can and help turn any nitrites into nitrates through the use of good bacteria which will grow in the bio balls which are all tumbling with the air flow and oxygenate the water so it's healthier for the plant's and fish. Wish I could help you build the pond bro. That'd be some fun.

Thank you! Yeah I'm going to have all the lava rocks in mesh bags so they will be easy to take out of the trash can filter for cleaning and like you said I'll use a separate container with pond water to rinse those off so I don't kill off the bacteria. We don't have a well here so my water comes from the city and the city water does have a bit of ammonia in it and also chlorine. I actually haven't thought about using bio balls, I'll check those out! It would be great to have your help too! It's going to be a lot of work haha

Nice video buddy! I'm all in for the only pond build vids during the build 😁. Just one question... did you considder the cleaning out of the 2 filters? For the guppy give her some crushed pea's or strawberrys, it might help.

  • @TobiasHolenstein

Thanks man! For cleaning the filters, I think what I will probably do is just clean out one at a time and what I'll probably do is just take out all the lava rocks (which shouldn't be too hard since they will be in mesh bags) and give them a rinse and clean out any debris that I see inside the trash can. I was considering putting in some kind of bulkhead with a valve so I can just backwash the filters, but I don't really want to drill into the bottom of the trash cans. Unfortunately the guppy passed away last night 😞

@@vertigoone-one-722 I might use a UV light later on but I kind of want to see how it does without one. I think it would be pretty cool if I don't need to use one

Wish your whole channel is fish only lol Of course that's just me and some people. The thing is people who watch your tech videos may not watch this video and respond. They might not know what's going on. Same thing for your fish reviewers. They don't necessary watch your tech videos.

I totally agree. I've always kind of battled with how my channel is so many different things. Like right now most of my views are coming from tech videos, so it makes me a little nervous to take a break from those, but also my tech videos have less return viewers than my fish videos, so I figure I'll take the chance
