How might you integrate a security system, like ring cameras? Independently from dakboard of course

Looks good, I'd suggest some sort of diffuser around the edge of the monitor, to hide the cables and well diffuse the light.

I love your setup! Quick question- It doesn't look like you've added any automation to turn on/off the device or run in kiosk mode etc. Do you just power up each day and open chrome and select full screen? I'm trying to at least power on and off the monitor automatically.

Mine runs 24/7 - I did just swtich to the new dakboard mini pc but I havent setup a nighttime shutdown to save power yet.

Hey is the bezel the same thickness on all four sides? The right side looks thicker. Also, did you cover up the power light on the monitor?

Right side (the bottom of the monitor) is thicker. I put black electrical tape over the light.

No, the dakboard software runs inside a web browser. It's literally just a website you go to.

So that means you don't need to buy a CPU? How do you go to the website and load everything on the monitor? Sorry I'm not the best with technology.

You need a computer to use dakboard, any computer that has a web browser. You don't install dakboard software, it just runs in a web browser window.

What can you do with the free version of Dak?

Able to display home security cameras with this set up?

Did you do anything special to get the monitor to adjust to portrait orientation? We have the same monitor but the image will not flip when we rotate the screen. Great job on this project!

What are the specs of your NUC? I plan on using an RPI4B setup but would like a NUC as a backup plan. Just curious what specs yours has so I can source similar specs. Thanks!

Well, last week I just switched to the $80 new DAK mini CPU so I dont have it running to look, but that NUC must be around 8th gen intel celeron and it had 8GB of ram. It ran far better than the dak mini CPU though.. but uses like 18 watts instead of 3 for the dak mini PC. The DAK mini CPU feels very underpowered and is nearly unusable for scrolling with touch screen.

@@mainelyhobbies Thanks for that info. I'm trying to DIY it myself. I've gotten to the point of setting up the software side of things. I DIYed the Rpi using a similar speced board (pi zero 2 w) as the Dak branded one. I got it to show a test board on a NON touch screen. My next goal would be to get it to run on a touch screen like you have. I mostly want the touch screen aspect for Todo lists. Scrolling calendar would be nice but not necessary. Now I'm hesitant to drop $350 on a touch screen monitor if I don't know it will work well.

Short of the 2 calendar option, can you achieve this result without the $5/mo plan?

You can sign up for the free version now before you have a screen and try and build out a free screen and see if it has what you care about. I can't remember for sure but I thought there were set templates on the free plan.

How far does it stick out?

How do you justify the cost? especially compared to some open source stuff

$5 a month? It's not much to justify, and I didn't see much open source that linked to Google photos for the rotating background.

I was thinking the same thing! I purchased the Dakboard Plus plan yearly subscription ( to save $$) and the Plus plan has a quicker refresh rate. I'm trying to set something up for my parents who have a mild onset of dementia. They just want to know the day, time, and doctor visits. a nice scrollable weekly calendar is a bonus!!! Love this setup. I bought the same monitor and had a Raspberry Pi4 laying around the house. Now just trying to customize it like you have shared.

Dak CPU meaning the raspberry pi by the dakboard company or did you get a mini windows pc? There were drivers I had to download on windows for the touchscreen. I also needed to connect via USB cable for touch support... Think that cable was included. Lots of info here backing that the monitor you and I have was specifically tested with dakboard, so it should work: blog.dakboard.com/dakboard-os-touchscreen-support-available/

I got the raspberry pi and connected it with a usb on one side and a usbc type on the other end. It came with the cpu. I’ll look into the link

So to get my touchscreen working I needed to use the USB printer cable. Not sure what it's called if there is an official name. One comes with this monitor.

Nice setup. Have 3 questions, if you have the time. Can it work with a reduced brightness and be woken up if you touch it? Can you reduce brightness to zero over night to save energy? Is there a reason why you didn’t go for the raspberry pi option? Thanks

1. That would require the monitor to have something built in to support dimming over USB and I dont see anything mentioing that kind of support. I am connected via HDMI not DP so there isnt a data connection there telling the backlight on the monitor to dim. If windows can dim, I dont know what the point would be since it uses the same electricity if the monitor isnt dimming. If I put the PC to sleep, touching the screen isnt waking it up. 2. Right now it is going all night. If there was something in windows 10 to turn the screen output off overnight, that would work. Im sure someone made a program to do this out there but I dont see it on a quick google search. 3. Raspberry pi would do this at a lower cost and less electricity BUT I already had the NUC PC lying around unused. I dont know if raspberry pi would let you swipe between windows. Also, up until a month or so ago, dakboard didnt support touch on raspberry pi. If starting from scratch, I would go the raspberry pi route.

And here, you mention that you would go with the raspberry pi route. I'm confused on what hardware direction to take. For me... I just want the smoothest usability. The financial difference isn't that severe that I would opt for the lesser (priced) hardware, in lieu of a better operating device. Is one hardware easier for a novice to navigate than the other? Thanks again!

@@nicholasarena9179 I'm also interested to hear if the rasparry pi route is something @mainelyhobbies would currently recommend. After having this 'project' on hold for a few months, I've now been doing again a deepdive to options mainly focusing on Skylight, Hearth and DAKboard. Currently I'm leaning into DAKboard + DAK mini CPU (thanks to this video), but also the above mentioned comment made me second guess a bit before ordering the equipment.
