5 - 12ft 2x4s ($31)
6 - 8ft 2z2s ($27)
12 - 12ft deckboards ($105)

Total cost (which includes Lowes 5% discount) $396 before tax.

Love the simple yet brilliant grooved system not requiring major woodworking tools and skills.

Beautiful compost setup! We need to build one. Just add it to the todo list! 😂

This is a well documented build. The original plans came out about 40 or 45 years ago from an agricultural college. The original pans were similar but used much less lumber as the interior of each bin was lined with half-inch mesh screen, with the same front assembly of a groove for the front boards. One can use regular lumber, with cedar fence boards cut to length for the front (as the compost sits against the front slats); the rest of the lumber is relatively free of direct compsot due to the mesh screen. Having said that, yours looks a lot neater. Great job!

TaDa! 🙌😁 My favorite is the louvered end walls. Go Hubs! So fancy. Thank you for the inspiration. I have limited space, so I will only be able to build 2 bays approx. 3' sq, but BUILD, I WILL. 🎉

Seeing you crawl on your knees on the driveway made my knees hurt. Put that saw up on a work table.

This is exactly what I've been wanting to build. Thank you so much for making this video. Are you happy with the angled slats on the ends? Is the wood that you used untreated? I would love to see an update on what you would change from this plan in the future.

I am happy. they seem to let more air in than the interior walls but also don't let the compost fall out. It wasn't hard to do the angled sides. i haven't had the build long enough to know if there is anything I would change yet...

We are going to replicate your build for our first attempt at composting. Your design looks awesome and straight forward. I have a question about rodents. Are you not worried about rats getting into your compost pile? My husband thinks we need to use something to keep rats out.

It’s a great design!! I’d love it in my garden! Question - Are you concerned with the arsenic and other chemicals leaching from deck boards and PT wood? It would seem counter productive at that point

Pressure treated wood is no longer treated with chemicals containing arsenic. They use borates and copper based preservatives. I recommend anyone concerned with using pressure treated wood in their garden or compost area should do their own research. A simple Google search will pull up all the relevant information.

I did do research and reputable sites were saying it contained arsenic. Like I said there are other chemicals that are of concern as well.

@@AandTtate1976 I think everyone has to decide for themselves what they are comfortable with. I am comfortable with using pressure treated wood.

This system is not new ! PBS had a series called Jim Croket’s Victory Garden. He showed how to build the same system to the letter. That was in the middle 70’s.
