old patrol + new patrol + crisis box gets you to roughly 1000 points with good balance between the units.

Was literally saying this to my self being like that would be the perfect start for someone collecting tau.

It really just shows that they want you doing infantry based combat for combat patrol instead of the variety you’d usually get

Both boxes are brilliant. Great starter set. My upcoming Tau army is built around these 2 sets.

This box is actually the reason i recently started buying a T'au army, im not a huge fan of the infantry, im a battlesuits guy, so this is all the troops im gonna need. It seems like a good setup box, a bunch of the less interesting purchases that you wouldn't really wanna make by themselves (minus the commander, that kit is sick)

To your point about something being missing from this box maybe some more stealth suits or a piranha would have been nice if GW was feeling generous. Another thought I had was to drop the pathfinders in favour of kroot and toss in those new hounds to go along with them.

YES! Getting us some of those cool new kroot would be awesome! Really would have been a feel good and nice discount because of their low points cost. I heard rumors though that we might get a kroot combat patrol though? Don't quote me on that though

@@CommanderNearsight They've been releasing extra combat patrol lists through White Dwarf that don't get box sets. A Kroot list there could be fun for actual Combat Patrol players, but wouldn't make them any cheaper to collect.

As a little bonus the pathfinders in this box are coming with the Killteam upgrade sprue

I'm still building out to my first 2000 points, have two of the old combat patrol boxes and I'll definitely be getting this to have the 'free' devilfish and a commander for my second crisis suit squad, that I'll also be getting.

As someone just getting into Tau, the new box definitely looks like a good way to Start Collecting Tau. As someone who refuses to pay GW prices, I'll continue buying cheap as chips proxies off Etsy for a fraction of the cost.

IMO the thing that feels off about the new patrol is the Devilfish isn't from the Hammerhead box, so that value is already diminished and it feels Corporate really wants to get rid of their excess Devilfish only kits. You have a okay centerpiece in the Devilfish and a good one with the Tau Commander, then it's just a bunch of little infantry dudes. On the other hand, the Pathfinder Kill Team upgrade sprue is cool I guess and could do a lot to make the little infantry dudes more interesting and make it easier for someone to also dip into KT format.

Yeah I agree with you in wishing that we had the hammer head instead of the devilfish or were able to convert between the two units. And I don't know if they get the kill team sprue but that would make this WAY more worth it for fun bits

I was originally disappointed with the numbers for the new patrol being less "bang for the buck" than the old one but I looked at it again using the codex points and through that lense GW designed it to be around 500 points and that feels better. I understand the missing something feeling too. I dont know what it should be, but having a commander without a unit to lead and having infantry units without a leader feels like an oversight but it's probably intentional to direct people on what to buy next to expand on the combat patrol as an upselling tactic. I'll also admit that through the lens of the codex points, they're already at 475 points. I would not be surprised if 500 was a hard limit on the design team, and nothing else fits with the units already included. If I was using codex points and redesigning the box a little, I would replace the breachers with a crisis starscyth team. It puts the box points at 495, the enforcer can lead the new suits, the pathfinders and devilfish can still work together, and there's now no overlap with the old box. They even work together better than before, IMO. The final upside for consumers is a better $/£/€ value, though that would be a downside for GW, I guess.

I really like your points and couldn't agree more with the crisis suit swap while the devilfish and pathfinders still working well together

Another note, if you buy a hammerhead you can turn the broadside into a SkyRay gunship and you’ll have two really good units if you don’t want the DevilFish.

I actually like this combat patrol. I agree that something is missing, but if we’re being honest, “something” is missing in most of the combat patrols from 10th, so I think it’s fine compared to the rest of the combat patrols this edition. I’m also happy there’s minimal overlap with the other combat patrol so if you get both it’s still a good deal.

I do have to agree with you there!

Pathfinders are there due to not selling well, I'd think. personally, I'd have switched them out with a set of Stealth Team and one Broadside, giving the proper anti-tank option and having a somewhat better unit on foot, with teh Broadside having the railgun for antitank work, but, GW is cutting back on all patrols to save money, so, understandable that they wouldn't go the better route.

Sick video I really like it although I wish we got a cadre fireblade with it but I agree something feels missing from it maybe a squad of tactical drones or the aforementioned cadre fireblade

So I got the new Tau Combat Patrol box and I was assembling the Devilfish when I noticed there doesn't seem to be smart missile options on the drones? Am I missing something or is it just not in the box? I got two little drone sprues I think for the Devilfish. Not sure.

The devilfish, I believe, traditionally only has gun drones. I believe that can only have gun drones for being build straight out of the kit. And traditionally they haven't been able to take smart missiles I don't believe. But I guess the update changed that

I think anyone expecting them to put a full squad of Crisis suits in the combat patrol would be crazy. Unfortunately these aren't start collecting boxes. I think maybe a Broadside would have been a cool edition with all the missiles.
