Currently reading Monte Cristo! I’m on page 850! It’s a masterpiece! I’m been laughing a lot. Great dark comedy I also admit I think I’m loving it more than Anna Karenina. While I was telling my husband how much I’m loving this book, he even asked “so is it better than Anna karenina?” They’re both such incredible books and very different subjects haha

Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose and Foucault's Pendulum are wonderful books. The Count of Monte Christo is one of the best books ever written, you'll love it, and although it's humongous it's so compelling you can breeze through it. Kinda. Okay, a slow summer breeze. The Plague by Camus is really about the doctor who chooses to stay inside the walls of a quarantined city during an outbreak of the plague. Such a good book.

Yes, I"m re-reading it now, in French. Of course, at times the descriptions are of a living, thinking person in Hell. The kind of Modernist thinking impossible for someone without a classical education. And of course there is the longing -everywhere - to escape mixed with the acceptance that there is no escape. And that's life, if you're pre-disposed to look at life that way. On the other hand, you may look at life more optimistically, as I do.

So glad you received the book Family Happiness written by Laurie Colwin that I sent! I am not sure if you saw in the author transcript that the main character identified with Anna Karenina which is why I thought of you. From the transcript. "And the novel is about her life and her family, which all seems perfect from the outside. But we, as the reader, know that, in fact, she is tormented. She is torn into. She references "Anna Karenina." I mean, she really feels like a heroine of literary proportion as she conducts this love affair." I hope you also received the Anna Karenina bookmark!

Carolyn after you read The Name of the Rose I’d highly recommend the film adaptation in 1986, it stars Sean Connery and young Christian Slater, and it’s such a nostalgic film for me, I know you love films so it’s just a recommendation💘

I absolutely agree to this. The film adaption of The Name of the Rose is a wonderful piece of work, with Sean Connery at its highest, probably one of his best performances, if not the best. And young Christian Slater plays his innocent and shy monk apprentice. A must see, especially in combination with reading the book. Both, movie and book, are mind-blowing.

I love the clothing. Have been on the website and fallen in love with the dresses ‐ so beautiful. But since I am living in Germany it is always a hassle with customs and customs fees when shipping comes from outside the EU, so I guess I will only admire them from afar. You've got some wonderful books, I can highly recommend The Name of the Rose (this is The Book EVERYONE talked about in the 1980's in Italy and the whole of Europe.) and the Count of Monte Christo. Also there is an award-winning (in Germany, France, Italy and Great Britain) movie from 1986 of The Name of the Rose . I highly recommend watching it if you can find it in the US. Marvelous performances from Sean Connery and young Christian Slater. I love your channel, you talking about books or your artwork is so heartwarming. Thank you! 🤩

I can't wait to hear what you think of Kristin Lavransdatter. We read it in my book club, too. On the topic of classic series - when I was young, I raced through Alexandre Dumas' series of novels about The Three Musketeers. Lots of fun. I ended up reading whatever I could find of his in English translation. Perhaps I should have paid more close attention in French class. 😉

The Sigrid Undset was one of my favourite books in my book club as well. We read it during the pandemic and I was completely taken in. I think about it all of the time and Kristen’s story is forever in my heart! You will love them. Harris is right- after the first book you will be intrigued to read on, but the real magic comes in the following two. Btw the way, to pronounce the series and the main character’s name it’s “La-VRAHNS Dah-teer) as in the daughter of Lavrans, which is a past and present tradition for family names in many Scandinavian cultures. I really hope you enjoy! Also, the Name of the Rose is EXCELLENT! It’s where to start with Umberto Eco, as he can become rather dense, but still wonderful! ❤

I have only read 3 of those, and would rank them as The Count of Monte Cristo, The Name of the Rose and then The Plague, with TCOMC miles above the others, and for me above Anna Karenina and War and Peace as well. TCOMC is an EASY READ - it just flies by. The Name of the Rose *is* good, but requires a very deep reading and concentration. I would like to read Kristin Lavransdatter, but have yet to see a copy in my local book stores or library sales. I liked Circe by Madeline Miller, but think Achilles is next. I own Foucault's Pendulum, but it is on my ever-growing TBR pile (now over 400 books).

I absolutely adored The Stranger by Camus. Recently (like last week), I finished it, read in two sittings, as it's written in two parts, and definitely worth the read. It's short and the writing is so compelling that it's easy to get through. Maybe I'm just obsessed with existential non-conformist literature, but I love understanding the humans/characters In the world who's identities are typically not "socially acceptable". Camus encapsulated that so perfectly in The Stranger. You are making me want to read The Plague now. I will say the ending to The Stranger was a bit underwhelming for me, but I'd like to know what you and Emma think. So PLEASE choose Camus!

I finished listening, on Audible, to Katie Lumsden's novel last week. I liked it very much, and am very curious to hear your opinion of it. I have about 15 pages left in Camus' La Peste (The Plague), which is a re-read for me but I won't spoil it for you. The other day i started listening to David Copperfield, and hope to have done with it before April. And last night I ordered Catcher in the Rye. Of course I've read bits and pieces of both before but this will be the first time going cover-to-cover with them. The clothing is gorgeous, and yes I did get the I Read Books sweatshirt. I like it a lot. It keeps me very warm in the morning, so thx.
