New Caledonia: curfew imposed as violence spreads before French debate
New Caledonia has imposed a curfew and banned public gatherings in the capital, Nouméa, after a day of protests against plans to expand the territory's voter roll to include more French citizens.

The protests, which have been simmering for weeks, were organised by the pro-independence field action coordination committee (CCAT) in response to plans by France to expand voter eligibility in local elections to include French nationals who have lived on the island for more than 10 years. The move, which is due to come up for debate in the French parliament on Tuesday, is strongly opposed by leaders of the Indigenous Kanak population, who see it as an attempt to further minimise their influence

They are not under any kind of colonial rule. Violent pro-independence people are a minority even within the Kanaky community. Actually, there’s no thing such as indigenous people versus white colonizers. A huge part of the population there is mixed race. Stop thinking you know everything about a place from a few Insta posts.

Watching this tell me how Europian countries are playing unfair practices in relation to some minority on other states for more rights like self governance while they're taking away these very basic rights from their minority.

France sows havoc wherever it set foot during colonization. This way, even if colonization is over, France still controls those regions and leeches off their diamond, gold and gas. Sahel region is a great example too!

@@riode2211 “It’s not.” What a smart point 😅 People from New Caledonia had three referendums, and three times they voted for staying in. This isn’t colonialism. A minority of extremists are currently terrorizing a population that usually lives in harmony there. But you don’t see to be very aware of the situation on site

Kanak people aren’t even the indigenous people of New Caledonia. They are well respected under the current democratic system, with many rights, even their own parliament… oh no, a minority of violent extremists burned it yesterday. Well. It’s not a colony. Please learn history and constitutional law

Exactly, that’s what I thought.
Caledonia is french and will remain it ! We lost Algeria, we won't lose Caledonia. Kanaks lost 3 referendum in a row, loyalists are the majority of those islands.
