NEW BUILD! Matt's Recovery Corvair + JConcepts + Redcat = Awesome RC Trail Truck

#mattsoffroadrecovery #jconcepts #corvair
Inspired by "Matt's Offroad Recovery" KZread channel, in 2023 JConcepts dropped a tenth-scale body of the Chevrolet Lakewood Corvair. This narrated RC build starts with that clear Lexan shell and takes it in a different, more northerly direction, with step-by-step details about the body prep and chassis mods. Here's the first trail run if you're interested in how it performs: • New JConcepts Corvair ...
BACKSTORY
With frost on the front lawn and a nip in the air, I was reminded that I didn't have a rig specifically set up for winter driving. But I had a broken-down old Redcat Gen8 chassis that I had been meaning to sell, or give away since it was in rough shape, and I thought let’s see what a winterized Corvair would look like. Maybe come up with a paint scheme and decals to go with the season. JConcepts bodies are relatively cheap so it wasn't like I was going to be out a bunch of dough if the project was a dud. You decide whether it turned out okay, and kindly leave a comment to explain.
BODY
JConcepts 1961 Lakewood Corvair
jconcepts.net/...
The Chevy Corvair was introduced as an affordable compact car to compete in the 1960s sales market with the Volkswagen Beetle. Having the distinct pleasure of being the only American-designed, mass-produced passenger car with rear-mounted and air-cooled engine, the Corvair was unique. During the 1961 model year, Chevrolet introduced a station wagon version giving an amazing amount of floor space and trunk space to an emerging customer base.

    Really nice video, appreciated seeing how you did the mounting. Thing of getting this body for my Everest Gen7 but in the Matt’s Off-road livery

    Steal away! To my surprise, every time I rotate the body back down the holes line up perfectly with the front pins. No wiggling, fishing, for a change. Only thing about this plan is you can't have a rear bumper that sticks out - it has to tuck under the shell. I made that bumper out of the dashboard from a toy-grade truck btw that I bought twenty years ago, to take apart and steal some parts. Been in my junk box the whole time. Never throw anything away. Cheers and thanks.

    Never thought of using electrical tape as stripping.. great idea

  • @NaturallyRC

    @NaturallyRC

    Thanks. Helps to put it on when the tape is warm. Around tight corners it's best to let it relax overnight, and then adjust it to its final curve, before doing the final trim.

    Electrical tape for trim is genius. I'll have to try that out

  • @NaturallyRC

    @NaturallyRC

    9 ай бұрын

    For sure. If you need to bend the tape around corners, warm it up with a hair dryer, press it down around the corner but don't trim the end off right away -- give it a day as it will shrink back a bit. Adjust it to compensate, and them trim it. It will stay put after that.

    I'd been looking for something different, and as soon as JConcpets announced the Corvair I jumped. Not sure why it took four plus months, but I think they might have run into serious production problems they couldn't solve. The design is a hard one to vacuum form, and the company admits to trouble. Yup, I was this close to giving away my old Redcat. Took a lot of work to make it good again, but it's running okay now. My buds and I are all looking forward to snow trailing.

  • @NaturallyRC

    @NaturallyRC

    Excellent point, and I was hesitant to use it. BIG problem is that the decal sheet does not include the prototypical chrome nose detail! Seems JConcepts really were out to copy Matt's Offroad KZread version (short of duplicating the door decals) note for note. Interstingly, the decal sheet shown on the JConcepts website does not match the one that came with my body, in that someone has scissored away the GM logo and stamp of authenticity. Hmmm. If you know or hear any reasons behind the sticker issue, let me know here in the comments section. Cheers and thanks.
