    The fines would at least have an effect if it were individuals getting the fine, not the company. There are individuals and boards at that company who are legally liable for what that company does. I bet some jail time wouldn't hurt the cause, but these individuals don't care if the company is fined, it needs to come out of these directors own pockets.

    This is a common refrain but overly simplistic. Boeing was at it's most innovative and successful with Bill Allen in charge, it's lowest point with Dennis Muilenburg. Allen was a lawyer, Muilenberg is an engineer. What Boeing needs is good _leadership._ Someone who understands that teamwork and safety should be the foundation, not toxic corporate culture and stock price.

Here's how it works: The bank gives out your money as loan, and charge interest obviously higher than inflation rate, and then give you, the depositor, interest lower than inflation rate. That means net loss for you. That is why I prefer to invest, and on average, my advisor makes returns that always beats inflation!

    Giving shareholders value has been a constant for almost 100 years in the western world . The ***real issue**** is the lack of regulation or the inability to uphold regulations. Airbus for example does not follow the same path as boeing because european regulatory agencies are decently empowered to be independent and authoritative and their planes would not be allowed to go up. In the US, too much neo-liberalism and libertarian ideas meant that government delegates many regulatory functions to bodies that are either not independent or essentially in the pocket of the companies they are supposed to inspect and regulate. As a result instead of the FAA inspecting and regulating Boeing we had Boeing regulating itself , with the outcomes we know. (and Boeing is to be fair just an example , the large majority of companies are going to cut corners as much as possible if allowed to regulate themselves and not answer to an actual independent and empowered regulatory body ).

    I used to fly Boeing 737s and like most jets they had something called a 'Yaw Damper' this become part of the fly by wire software in later aircraft. The yaw damper used to input small rudder inputs to prevent or stop Dutch roll, the movement was imperceptibly in the rudder pedals and there was a small gauge in the control panel to show that it was moving which was barely noticeable. One day I boarded one of the company's aircraft at Gatwick U.K. to fly to Barcelona Spain and bach. The only noted defect was 'Yaw damper inoperable' which I checked was allowable so off we went. A short while into that flight I decided that I would never accept a 737 for flight with the defect again (as Captain we have that right no matter what the manual says). The flight there and back was horrible, there was nothing that we could do to stop the Dutch Roll, yes the effect reduces until the next tiny bump or turn or whatever, it was safe but absolutely awful, it must. Have been even worse for the passengers near the back.

    No one begrudges a company making a profit. However... when the profits are excessive, and the majority of those profits are spent on management bonuses and stock buybacks instead of producing a reliable product costing the lives of humdreds of unsuspecting customers, there needs to be accountability. Perhaps Congress should consider Deferred Adjudication and probation instead of just dropping charges in the future. Making a huge show of indignation, imposing no real penalties, then just forgetting about the problem is a horrible way to manage a company or a country.

  • @jlighter1

    @jlighter1

    8 күн бұрын

    It’s not antithetical if you think on the time scale of reputational damage. Where it comes into conflict is when you have a solid process but the shareholders demand “line go up.” R&D for process/quality improvements costs money. Safety inspections cost time and money, and “how often do they actually turn up something that’s a problem?” Junking defective parts means you wasted money, and “is it _actually_ dangerous or just not ideal?” It’s the short-term thinking about “how do we make line go up” and “how can we save a buck or ten per hour” that results in cutting little bits of the process along the way, all in the name of efficiency and profits. Over time those little cuts accumulate into a door-plug blowing off a plane mid-flight, a wheel falling off during take-off, and so on. It’s “safety and reliability” against “quarterly profits,” and when a company’s thought process is locked to that shorter time frame, the company can lose perspective over how the small changes interact. Reputational damage takes time to manifest, especially when there’s so little competition in your market.
