New BMC Teammachine R ride feel, details, Red Bull racing interview

Спорт

The new BMC Teammachine R was designed with Red Bull Advanced Technologies. BMC invited me down to Austin, Texas to visit with Red Bull at the Formula 1 race where Red Bull driver Max Verstappen won handily. I test rode the bike on the F1 track and on the roads around Austin.
Here, I share the details on the bike, give you my ride impressions, and also share an interview I did with Rob Gray, technical director for Red Bull Advanced Technologies.
BMC claims its latest bike is lighter, stiffer, faster… of course it is, right? That talk is to be expected. What's curious is that this latest aero bike isn’t an aero bike, according to BMC. They are calling this an all-around race bike. What what you call a bike with 62mm-deep wheels and such deep frame shaping?

    I love this bike. Great review. I ride the Enve SES Aero bars that are flared like this at 37 top 42 drops. They are, by far, my favorite bars ever. The flare is completely appropriate for all situations. The narrow top is awesome, but the ability to also have a wider grip in the drops for sprinting is the absolute best. I would never pay that kind of money and have to settle for a 4 year old groupset. If I'm paying $16k for a bike, I'm building it the way I want from the ground up. I'm not sure I get who buys these super expensive bikes as is off the showroom floor.

    I’ve been looking for a vid like this with full details from the RBf1 side. I’m in my early 50s, can turn the gear, and seriously love how the bike is the pinnacle of current design . Red Bull racing aero is Aidrian Newey and his team . He’s why red bull wins races. I’m getting one of these, it’s time I go nuts for one special bike. Sadly they are already hard to find arriving any time soon.

    Generally, yes - it does feel like being a little toy in a giant's world. That said, it depends on the track. Dropping into Laguna Seca's corkscrew is cool on any bike. The Florida F1 track is dead flat and not the coolest place to ride a bike. Giant did a launch at Magny-Cours in France that was halfway in between, kinda like this Austin track. Bike races on a car track would also make for boring spectating, because the track is just so wide. It's like road stage races on giant US highways made for semis vs the Giro on tiny little serpentine lanes. Still cool to see the scene there in Austin. I don't care about car racing but I love to see fans fired up about their thing.

    I did a 12H bike race in Monza, from sunset to dawn, it was fun because we were doing relays and we were at night with lights etc. but I wouldn't do it daytime, especially because I have driven (cars and motorbikes) pretty hard on the same track and it is meant to be driven/ridden full gas. That BMC looks speedy though.

    I used to take my bike to the racetracks I rode my moto on. The first thing you realize is that that flat straight road you think it is on the motorcycle is actually a 5% climb in some cases 🤣 Places you wouldn't think to be a big grade are sometimes almost double digits! It's alright but the racetracks are soooooo wide. Riding on tight, technical canyon roads will always be more fun for going slow. If you're on a fast moto or car, those tracks get tight and technical, very fast :)

  • @TheRidewithBenDelaney

    Basically the same geo but stiffer. I love the SLR, for the record. Definitely an out-an-out race bike but just a skootch less aggressive on the front end than most, and what strikes me as a perfect balance of compliance and stiffness. I have relatively broad shoulders so a 40cm bar would still be aggressive for me. Normally I ride a 42. I rode a 44 for 10+ years.

    @TheRidewithBenDelaney ok, thanks for that!! I own the SLR01.. I have heard from a few sources now the R is extremely stiff, best for racing, and the SLR01 is better, all rounder... Yeah the 36cm bars seem too narrow.. I agree a size 40cm bar would of been better! I rider 42cm prefer the leverage like you said, especially off the saddle up hills..

    Hi Ben, I am in the market for a new ride and have come down to two bikes the BMC Teammachine R and the Specialized Tarmac SL8 S-Works. I am from Austin and curious to know how you found the Team Machine R on the Austin road's vs the track at COTA. I am also curious to know what it is like in Cross Winds and does the lower bottom bracket affect the ground clearance if you where to Crit race this bike? You made reference to the Specialized Venge. Is the Team Machine R as stiff as the Venge or stiffer?

  • @TheRidewithBenDelaney

    @TheRidewithBenDelaney

    7 ай бұрын

    Hey Geoff. Crosswind feel is definitely about the wheels, right? The DT's on the top model are decent there, but perhaps not the absolutely best for stability. Some brands lean more towards wind tunnel speed, some more towards stable feel. I just did the two ride and didn't have crazy gusts to deal with. In general, the wider the rim (for the same depth), the more stable the things feel. For BB drop, my notes have it at 69mm, vs 72 Tarmac, 70 Madone, 73 Melee, etc. So no worries there. R vs Venge for perceived stiffness? Shoot, man - the differences are way too small and the time between riding the two bikes way too great for me to say anything of value there! Good luck and have fun.

    Hi Ben appreciate your feedback, so thank you so much for your response. I have ridden the SL8 over 30km and it felt smooth and very efficient to ride, it has a very compliant riding style nowhere as stiff as the Venge. There was a mention of choice of carbon fibers being different for red bull in the designing of the bikes. So what was the differences ?

  • @TheRidewithBenDelaney

    @TheRidewithBenDelaney

    8 ай бұрын

    Engineers always have a range of modulus fibers to work with, balancing stiffness (modulus) with strength. High modulus typically means lower impact strength. So I assume what he meant by 'more aggressive' in their choice was favoring more high modulus than BMC had done. Good question. Road.cc has a good explain on carbon in bikes here: road.cc/content/feature/what-does-ud-woven-and-high-modulus-fibre-mean-292479

  • @TheRidewithBenDelaney

    @TheRidewithBenDelaney

    He could also have meant being more aggressive in spending on types of fibers. I'll ask!

  • @TheRidewithBenDelaney

    Here's the 'we're not giving anything away' response I got from BMC: ""The choice of carbon fibre was based on a joint mission for a stiffer and lighter frame, which involved a refined recipe with different ingredients.” So hopefully my first answer was more helpful. Cheers.

    My dream is that the UCI mandates that if a brand is to sponsor a professional team, these brands are restricted to making one road bike that will receive UCI approval. This would reduce confusion for consumers about which bike is the "best" road bike for their riding style. This would encourage companies and consumers to think more about the things that actually matter when it comes to going fast and being comfortable, which are wheels, tires, gearing, and contact points/positioning of the rider. We would see fewer chassis being offered, but likely more emphasis put into how they are built up. So, in the case of Canyon, you would have a road bike that was perhaps slightly heavier than the Ultimate, slightly less aero than the Aeroad, and slightly less compliant than the Endurace, rolled into one chassis, and then you would have the option of 60/45/35 rims, 25, 28, 32 tires, 54+40/52+36/etc rings, zero setback+long and slammed cockpit/15mm setback + short and tall cockpit. Every frame seemingly becoming aero, light and integration already has us about 90% of the way here already. For instance, an Endurace with 60mm rims with 25c tires, a 53+39, 11-30 cassette, sized down with a ton of saddle-bar drop and a 120 stem with 40c bars is WAAAYYYYY more of a race bike than a Aeroad with 30mm rims, 30c tires, 50/34 +11-36, and a stack of spacers under the short stem with 44cm bars. And likewise, that Aeroad would be close to the Endurace in terms of comfort if they were both set up this way. So, Canyon would end up making the Ultimate a bit heavier and more aero to approach the Aeroad, with slightly longer and slacker geo to approach the Endurace, and then have all the options available above when you order the Ultimaerondurace, and people would actually end up with a bike that suits their exact needs.

    If could buy the bike would just the replace bars/ stem to some other bar/stem that fit better right away. Or nor even have shop not install the them install the the ones I choose. Bar that small will work with smaller people or smooth roads but taller people/ rough pavement the stock bar got a go. Size 60/XL frame with such small bars seems out place and not comfortable. BMC would been better to have three sizes of their bar/stem then match to fame size. The philosophy of narrow bar is there but need range to make or work for various types of people.
