Black Diamond releases the all-new Capitan and Capitan Kids climbing helmets. Both share a combination EPP and EPS liner with a full ABS plastic hardshell. The adult version and the Kids version will come with or without MIPS, but only the Kids version will be dual certified for climbing and biking. This helmet sits right between the more expensive BD Vision helmet and the less expensive BD Halfdome. At $69 for the non-MIPS version, it's going to be a contender for best all-around value helmet from BD despite it being 90-ish grams heavier than the Vision. The dual shell construction allow the designers to create a closer, more streamlined fit while providing more coverage. It will be coming in 2 sizes and should be available sometime in the summer of 2022.

Thank you just pulled the trigger on the MIPS version. Glad to also have the same bucket for riding the bike! Had a vapor and dang it was comfortable, light and good looking but it could not hold up to the Oregon Choss. Oh thank love the visual of the "llittle groms throwing slings."

The dual rated helmet us such a great idea. It is a pain in the butt to carry 2 helmets if you bike to the craig. Please make a adult version that has that!

There are actually a number of dual cert. helmets on the market and you can filter on that feature on WeighMyRack.com/helmet - however, usually they are certified for ski/climb, not bike/climb. Although the cert. is different, the ski cert. is a bit more rigorous than bike so I personally would feel comfortable wearing a ski helmet while biking. And in my experience, many people feel comfortable wearing climbing helmets while riding. Us adults want stickers as well, now I have to buy my helmet + kids version to get them :,(

We didn't get the weight of kid's helmet unfortunately. We haven't received the final production specs from BD on any of the Capitan helmets but when we do we'll be adding them to WeighMyRack
I like the fit but I hate the ratchet system, my hood always gets caught when I pull it on and inadvertently loosens the helmet. Super annoying.
Is this suitable for backcountry skiing?

The Capitan is not ski certified. So if you choose to use it skiing, it's equivalent to any other climbing helmet. Here is an article we wrote on the multi-use helmet options: blog.weighmyrack.com/helmets-certified-for-climbing-and-skiing/ You'll notice that all of the ski/climb certified helmets have very little ventilation because they need to meet the penetration requirements of the ski certification.

Interesting take on MIPS.... It doesn't work. At least a lot of independent studies suggest so. Honestly, after 20 yrs of climbing I can't say I've ever taken or heard of a guy that would significantly be affected by MIPS. Seems like a tech that's not necessary
