We use to buy the chilled asda ready meals but with the prices jumping so much we stopped and now only keep afew of the frozen ones in the freezer as backup. It is one hell of alot cheaper just to make our own, the biggest cost was buying the pyrex dishes for prepreped meals. Mostly i make componets of meals now, such as minced beef and onion seared and slow cooked, portioned into deli containers and frozen, the basic mince and onion can become fillings for cottage pies, simple beef and onion pie with puff lid, Lasagne, spagbol, even pasties, just add passata herbs and spices, food prepped par cooked vegetables or whatever. For the past year we have been making canned meals, like the yanks do, fill jars with the ingredients, pressure cook, allow to cool, they are shelf stable so we keep them in the pantry. Easy to use, pop the lid pour onto a plate and microwave, 5-6 minutes meal done if it is an all in one, other wise how ever long it takes to cook rice/pasta/bulgur/lental/vegetables. With the way prices are now and how F'ed the supply chains have become, we felt it is better to invest in dried foods and alike. 80% of the back garden is now a vegetable garden and built a second larger greenhouse, rain harvesting to IBC containers etc. Before my mother died she said we had made a victory garden just like her family had during WW2. long winded whinge of a reply to a video about a sheppards pie, that being blunt is not worth it. Take care, God bless one and all.

Looks identical to the same thing in Morrisons (£4.50), M&S (£5) and used to be available in Aldi for £3.19. I suspect most supermarkets source this type of ready meal from the same manufacturer with just minor tweaks and different sleeves. 27% meat content is not very generous for what is supposed to be a premium product.

There are alot of nice meals in this range now....they aren't particularly new they replaced some of ASDA's extra special range. I'm not sure if all the extra special range will be replaced but bistro bom bahia and extra special are the "luxury" asda items. All the 1's I've eaten have been good but they are a bit more expensive. Most of them also say "for two people"....but many of them are a bit too small for that and yes alot of them fail the seal peel test.

I’m like you m8. I prefer my lamb to be chunky and not minced, as you never know what was ‘ minced ‘ 🤔🥴🥴. I’m happy that this pie hadn’t got any mint in it, as it tends to cover the taste of the lamb. My Nan used to make a pukka Shepards Pie using mutton back in 60’s, she always said Shepard’s would always use the older sheep for 1:36 themselves. I also think some white pepper is better for seasoning. Too much black pepper used these days 👎👎. When doing my own ? I like to cover the top with mashed potato and swede/turnip, not too overly mashed with milk, but with plenty of butter. I usually cut off all the fat and fry it off on a low heat to get those lovely juices to make my gravy. All you need then are some peas and carrots Although this looked good ? I don’t think it would be for me. As always a good and honest review Gareth. I’ve given up on the old peel test. I just use a knife now.

How long before the meat content is lowered? Every new product starts out with more meat then once they remove the new from the packaging the meat content of the product drops, maybe only two or three percent, but it drops. I've just freeze framed the video on the nutrition table. This is a strange way ASDA has of presenting the calories. Normally, manufacturers state the calorie count for the product or half the product, but here they've given the calories as 111 per 100g. So the customer then has to get the net weight (400g) and calculate the total calories (4 x 111). Is this done to try and pretend this pie is low in calories if people just happen to glance at the 111 figure?

I also always like to eat pie like this with pickled red cabbage and making your own with fresh red cabbage and distilled vinegar, costs less than half, tastes much better and is ridiculously easy to DIY.
Im so lazy, i dont put it on a plate, i eat it straight from the foil tray and save washing up 😄

Hi Gareth , hope your enjoying the weekend, I'm a cottage pie fan and I make my own I don't get my beef or lamb from New Zealand, I use local Welsh beef from the farm shop down the road from me not all the time unless i'm in the supermarket then it could be UK or Scottish or Welsh beef. What I do for the crispy potato top I get a packet of ready salted crisps smash them so you end up with very small bit and dust and sprinkle it over the smash and brown it off under the grill, I love it, catch you soon Take care

Mr BFG, I noticed the the bar of colours, it's CMYK plus 4 spot colours AND Gold embossing . . . The Shepherd's Pie did look good and I do agree with you on trying take that Plastic off.
The ASDA shepherd's pie for 2 ( 800g ) is £3.80 . MInce lamb 21%. bit more potatoe carrot and swede. No cheese parsley crumb but really tasty . Fed me and Mum. Much better value . Keep up the good work Gareth .

why do we love sheperds pie with chips, spud on spud can't beat it
There are alot of nice meals in this range now....they aren't particularly new they replaced some of ASDA's extra special range.
Brilliant video as always..

Totally agree about the chunks of meat in a shepherds pie instead of mince, That was also the original way it was made, Mince only started being used because it was a cheap way to commercialize it (back in the late 50s and early 60s)
So, I know it's been asked before but we have a lot of lambs here in the UK, so why new Zealand lamb? I'm sure it's just as good but it's had to come from much further away. Carbon footprint and all that!
The filling looks like cat sick 😂 thanks for another honest review 💜💜💜

I'm going to have to go to Specsavers. I thought this was a " Bisto" Shepherd's Pie😳. Moving swiftly on🤓 For the price, I'd say this was a very good buy&value for money We'd all like more filling, or just larger chunks of onions and the other vegetables to give not only taste but texture. I would like more crunchy topping (with added dry crispy fried onions) And of course Baked Beans 👍 All things considered, a brilliant video and very informative. Another winner Gareth 🥳Allan&Family
🥳🥳 Lamb from New Zealand 🇳🇿 . Gareth I made it into the video. Glad it was tasty.
The Bistro range are pretty good. I've noticed the shepherds pie a few times over the last months, but it's not something I would buy. I've bought the lamb shanks, the beef bourguignon and the steak and ales pies. All of which were very tasty. Nom nom
Similar in Iceland on £1 section Give it a try 👍
One of the problems is that the veggies aren't chunky enough. I had one of these only a few days ago, the Lamb Hotpot from Morrison's was 100% better!
I buy quite a few things from the Bistro range and have never been disappointed.....
Bet that is delicious- I’ve tried a couple from this range and they’re good 🙌👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Hi Gareth who are the crooks the shepherds or asda at that price!
I’M (probably not) NNEWWW. Nice one Gaz.
Hello Mate.Hope you're well Gaz and Family and i hope all the Foodie Family are all well too.Yeah i tried this on a Bistro Deal once before and i remember thinking it was pretty bland tbh and lacking Flavour. The Desert was good mind and i think i had the Runny Scotch Eggs as Starter on the Deal but i kept them though for a Morning after breakfast after one of Your Live nights and they didn't touch the Sides kinda thing but tasty.

I just use a knife now.

looks pretty good but 400g is too small for me i want 5/600g. I make my own too and works out to be 60p per 100g but with red wine and good beef stock and cooked for a while on a low simmer which increase flavours. But this is ok imo
Never worried about the plastic - 40 years of cooking and that plastic around the edge has never melted...

How long before the meat content is lowered? Every new product starts out with more meat then once they remove the new from the packaging the meat content of the product drops, maybe only two or three percent, but it drops. Manufacturers are always trying to find ways of using cheaper products in the foods they sell but with the taste being no different to when they included the dearer products in the food.

Thank you for this. I wouldn't buy it again either, nor the cottage pie... I recently bought their Chicken Chow mein. Got husband his favourite chicken in black bean sauce. He said his was OK and would eat it again. My Chow main looked heavenly but sadly was very bland. Really needed a good stir up but lid was left on pierced microwave style. Chicken in it was great, sadly the veg and sauce were not. Noodles were 'OK'.... Try not to taste test this one... I think my husband would like the shepherds pie purely because of the cheese mash and lack of vege 😂.

Shop-bought pies like this, whether made from shepherds or cottages 😁, are usually a meat soup topped with mash. More often, than not, they're tasty. Nothing matches a proper home made pie with real meat and crunchy mash on top... 🤤
