New Big Picture - GHOST OF CARTOONS PAST

Ойын-сауық

/ moviebob1
30 years ago a handful of people changed the face of TV animation and comedy for a whole generation. Then the empire built on their work did them dirty and told the world to forget about them. All of this has happened before, and will again. But maybe the bad guys won't completely get away with it - this time.

One of the best habits I've picked up is learning the names of the people who have crafted the stories I carry with me. They don't spring fully formed from the forehead of a corporate logo. _People_ make these stories by their blood, sweat, and skill. They are sustained by the recognition and compensation they've earned. If they don't get it, we don't get new stories.

Another thing worth mentioning is that Moltar got his own spin off as the original host of Toonami, which basically single-handedly formed mainstream anime fandom in Western culture. For my own experience, I was the youngest of three kids and was 11 ish years old when we switched from dial up to the new Always Online model. My family did not have cable, but most of my friends did. So my first and only experience with Harvey Birdman is the running gag of "Did you get that thing I sent ya?" When someone finally says Yes and the character was SO HAPPY HE HAD TO SHOUT IT FROM MULTIPLE ROOF TOPS at around 2 am after my friend and I fell asleep watching the anime block on adult swim.

I’d also argue that Family Guy and Futurama would likely had been relics of the early 2000’s if Adult Swim never existed. The audiences Space Ghost and ATHF created gave them the numbers for revival, something that back then never happened for network TV shows.

I remember when this era of Adult swim began. I managed to record a marathon of Space Ghost, Harvey Birdman, Sealab and Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Had a friend over, and said "you have to see this." He watched the entire 4 hour tape, turned to me and said "this is one of the most brilliant things I've seen, can we watch that again?" It's sad that the execs at Cartoon Network thought that the retro / amateurish animation style was the appeal of these shows and not the writing. C Martin Croker once told me that he had several projects rejected because the animation was "too good." Too many shit shows were put out from Adult Swim based on that ridiculous viewpoint. I never knew how Cartoon Network absolutely fucked these guys over 😞

As someone who didn't know any of this, I am now extremely sad. I was 25 when [adult swim] started, and every show on the lineup was like pure mojo beamed from space into my head. _The Brak Show_ especially. I'm also now fairly glad I stopped watching entirely after _Sealab 2021, The Brak Show,_ and _Harvey Birdman_ ended.

I remember in 1995 or 96 first seeing Space Ghost coast to coast one late night when I couldn’t sleep from a fever. I swore for years that it was a fever dream because no one else I knew knew the show. It wasn’t until I saw something on Newgrounds around 2000 that referenced it.

And even though it had been more than a decade, a great many of them I could still quote word for word. Gave me so many happy feels about long lost youth. After video ended: Fuck.

Geez - I just assumed the talent in the adult swim cartoons were getting some kind of compensation in line with actors on similar level shows throughout the rest of the TV landscape. It's really gross that they were being used so badly. Aqua Teen, Sea Lab, Birdman, Venture Bros - those were just amazing. I hope some of them got a fair shake. I'm guessing Seth Green got his dues for Robot Chicken.

as a small aside about CN but not AS, i will never forgive them for ensuring that Megas XLR will NEVER get a reboot because they counted the show as a lose to be exempt from taxes for it and thus cannot sell the property license, release it to streaming services or anything else cause then they would have to pay back taxes.

Unfortunately, this isn't anything new. A lot of the monetary success of Power Rangers in 1993 can be attributed to the show being non union and not having to pay most of the cast and crew royalties. Haim Saban made so much money that he gained legitimate political power that he wields to this day while most people who actually worked on the show struggle to pay their rent.
