New Bible Just Dropped - SBL Study Bible

Often, I am asked about my favourite translation. And currently, that is the NRSVue, a new translation that was released just last year. Well, now a new Study Bible based on the NRVSue has also been released: The SBL Study Bible. This isn’t meant to replace a full commentary set, but it’s an excellent resource for anyone who wants to study the Bible more seriously. High-quality footnotes and cross-references, fantastic introductory essays to individual books, and wonderful little mini insert-articles to add context as you read. Highly recommended. Would read again.

What about the Student bible of the Harper Collins NSRVUE? i was considering it for my teenage son. What are the differences exactly?

I haven’t seen that one so I’m not sure what the “student” content is like but the NRSVue is an excellent modern translation.

The SBL Study Bible is the successor to the Harper Collins Study Bible also edited by SBL contributors.

Yep. But updated and now using the NRSVue. And to be fair, they’re not trying hot hide the rebrand, it’s listed right on the back cover.

Thanks for the review. I also find the NRSVue to be a valuable, neutral, yet almost unknown translation! But some pictures of the pages of this Bible would have been most appreciated (the layout and fonts in some Study Bibles are really poor - so before investing in this one I would have liked to have seen what it looked like inside). How many and how good / relevant are the maps, illustrations, charts etc? And, most importantly, a more critical description of the general tone and content of the Study Notes would have been appreciated, especially as positions held by many SBL authorities are known to be contrary to those followed by some denominations.

I hate to make a comment like this. Next summer, when I have money coming in, I intend to buy this book. But I find your review to be lacking in important details. Details the may turn some folks away. This is a multi-people written book. Atheist, Muslims, Catholics, Protestants, anyone that the organization let in the door, wrote in this book. From reading the list of contributors the only people banned from having an input in the CT product is KJV fans. Basically, it is a great Doubters Dictionary. The original SBL was a heavy product to read but not as elaborate as this production. The majority of the contributors to the original text are eliminated from contributing to this version of a study bible. Who knows, the Catholic Church might get behind this book as THE BIBLE. .

I think that’s part of what makes this particular Bible such a great resource. That said, the underlying translation of this Bible is the NRSVue and that was done by a confessional committee of Christian believers. The SBL portion of the publication which includes the essays and background information was written by academic members of the Society of Biblical Literature which does welcome non-confessional perspectives if they are grounded in solid biblical scholarship.

@@commonschurch As I said before, I intend to get a copy, just can't afford to buy stuff in the winter. It has some value, but it is no bible. Frankly, this gives me a rational reason to spend money on an NRSVUE.

Religious people must learn to draw from the wisdom within them. Jesus did not tell his followers to rely on Scripture. Nay, he told them specifically and rightfully, the Holy Spirit will teach you everything, it will guide you into all truth. He also told the religious hypocrites, you search the Scriptures because you THINK that in them you have eternal life. The things outside of you serve a purpose, but be guided by That which is within you. That is the Gospel, the power to be free dwells within you. Religion creates slaves, dependency, hypocrisy, bigotry, exclusionism, division. It is an angel of light, an antichrist.

Perhaps as soon as we start labelling people and arbitrarily deciding they are misguided without listening to their stories we have already given in to a way that is anti Jesus. Grace and peace.

@commonschurch Christians, like all religious people, are misguided. It's not a label. It's the truth. Here you are advertising a book to guide your listeners. Now why would you do that, if you realize the truth is from within? You're educated, but you're asleep. You lack awareness. Awake people don't need Bibles.

It’s probably true that we’re all misguided in some of our thoughts. It’s also true that a lot of truth can be learned by looking within. It’s also true that we can all learn a lot from each other and from science and from nature and even from religious texts if we are open.

@commonschurch I agree. We can learn from our outward experience, indeed. Quite right. However Religious people, who comprise about 6 billion people on the planet today, alas have a dependency upon their religious books! For this reason, because religious people are not encouraged to seek within themselves, they are ignorant of the truth. They can only quote. Their knowledge ends at the edge of every page. They lack depth and understanding. Religious people will be free only when they look within, when they know themselves. What is faith? What does it mean to be born again? What does it mean to be saved? And saved from what? What is Grace? What is God? What does it mean, to be perfect? What does it mean, to not judge? What is sin? These and many more queries can launch a productive meditation, but beware not to answer with Christian platitudes and trite responses that come from theology. The spiritual path is not about theology, it is about inward awareness that arises out of observation of life and meditation. Know that it is you yourself who are the way, and your way is forged by your choices, and from your choices comes Grace, in the form of serendipities, synchronicities and adversities. You are the wisdom of God, the Ineffable Intelligence. You don't need any person, nor any book. The key word is NEED. When you SEE, you are able to judge the Bible. Those who cannot SEE operate in reverse, the book judges them, and since they lack in wisdom, their interpretations are inconsistent and afield from the truth.
