So we have a little bit of news from Slitherine on the future of Betas for Broken arrow and since that's fairly big news I figured it was time to do a summary of the Q&A done by FLX. Including details from the actual Q&A not just what was listed on steam.

it's a bit frustrating with delays in releasing the game & giving a release timetable . I understand they want to cook the game & testing from beta but damm release schedule of being Q2 2024 to now another beta and release Q4 or Q1 2025 . Hopefully we can get some pre order or atleast get a longer beta period to fix more bugs and not delay the game longer

Yeah I think it's a shame, I think probably the biggest issue has been optimization to get it running better. It's actually all a rather weird modern issue because games get announced early in development to build hype, thus when delays happen we all know about it. Where years ago they made the game then announced it when it was nearly finished.

@@Bandanner The guy who does the community outreach for BA on steam said there have "been no delays" because they never announced a release date.

@@Rimasta1 Haha that's what we call spin. Slitherine/STB have made several announcements about release due end of 2023, then Q1=2 2024 and now second half of 2024. So I agree they never said a VERY specific date but the reason everyone says its been delayed is because it keeps bypassing these "date ranges" ;) So technically that person is not lying... technically. :P

They Just want to get it right which I fully understand, having a bad release in peformance can be a huge blow to sales and I would like to see the RTS get some love. Especially as this has some competitive potential and from their blogs I can tell they really know what they want to achieve, they have a vision to keep the game playable and balanced in multiplayer. I run a pretty old rig and had no problems with peformance.
This is still the main game I'm hyped for. It was super fun and... yeah, I do wonder about nation's variety and mixing. Like... I wouldn't mind a situation where if they add Russia and China and Iran that you could mix them while also mixing NATO members, while still keeping single-nation decks versatile. Hopefully. But we'll see.

Yeah I think in my head I always assumed you would be able to mix NATO nations but if it really messed up balance etc I could live without it. Lets be fair I just want the British in :P

I'd be cool if there were a lend-lease option, so you can bring weaponry from other nations albeit at a bigger cost of points, also them being more limited in numbers and maybe with slight worse stats (that get removed after the crew gets some experience (I dunno if there's any kind of exp system so maybe getting a few kills and being alive for certain amount of time)) than if you were playing said country that you are leasing them from.

i am hyped for BA, and i am happy that this qa answered most of the problems with beta, but i think paying for the maps will divide community like it did in bf4 with premium and non premium users
As a Korean, I am very excited about the mention of Korea's mountains. Korea has been developing the next-generation weapons industry in the 2020s, and not only is the Korean next-generation fighter 'KF-21 Boramae' in the completion stage, the K-3 equipped with electrothermal chemical artillery is under development, and various mobile missile launch vehicles exist. A new tank named M2020 in South Korea has been confirmed in North Korea, and in addition, it is expected that North Korea's version of the spike missile, the Juche 107 model 155mm self-propelled howitzer, and a new multiple rocket launcher such as the KN-16 will be released.

No problem, just realised it was a shame the Steam post missed out some of the extra stuff :)
The only thing i don't like about BA right now is that devs have chosen this "infantry can't stop armor" approach, which is nor realistic (as that's what infantry does irl), nor fun for gameplay, as rn , armor can just rip through your infantry lines like it's butter without taking any casualties or even damage (cuz of APS), it makes for too easy tank gameplay where you just right click at enemy's infantry positions and even if you know that you can be ambushed by some cheeky RPG-28 to the side, you're not gonna loose the expensive unit anyway, you don't even need to have infantry covering your tanks rn most of the time. Ideal infantry vs armor should play out like this: if infantry jumps on tank in the forrest ranges -> a tank should take some dangerous damage, get panicked, be getting some mobility or other crits. If tank gets penned to the side even by something like M3 MAW -> it should get a lot of both HP and morale damage. A careless tank that goes head first without it's own infantry or recon, should get higher chances to be punished for such move even by simple infantry. At the same time, careless infantry crossing the open field should get raped by a tank's cannon. It was done ideally in wargame: red dragon, imo.

It's obviously very difficult for them to get the balance right, hopefully some of the changes do make infantry more effective. But they have stated more than once they aren't aiming for realism in BA, so I guess that's not at the forefront of their mind. I keep going back and forth in my head, obviously I am used to Wargame/WARNO where a side shot from a nasty RPG will cripple/kill a tank.

For me honestly I don't really care about the realism as much as the balance. Obviously try to be realistic when possible for immersion, but balance and fun should still be primary as real combat is not fun at all. I do agree thought that is is questionable that tanks have the ability to just drive up to infantry in a forest and deck on them. I am not saying every infantry should be able to kill a tank within 1000m. For instance, not AT dedicated infantry teams shouldn't be able to kill every tank with ease but should deal some damage, or maybe disable components. I just hate how you can right click tanks into a forest full of infantry and the tanks just delete the infantry 50m away. There should be at least some thought + preparation into a push with tanks, instead of a simple right click move order that instantaneously results in a puncture of your frontline. "Don't worry little jimmy most AT can't pen your tank and the ones that can will be blocked by APS!"
Well... seems the release for 2024 is compromised. I was hyped for this game but the problem is that this is a very ambitious game for such a small development team and now I'm afraid that they never deliver all their promises... And why they had to use UNITY ??? This game engine was absolutely not made for that. They are obviously struggling with that 💀

I think they will do what they want to do eventually, but you are right for such a small team its a big task, a lot like Eugen and WARNO in that respect, small teams. Sadly I think Unity was selected early on and perhaps no one grasped then how many difficulties they would have with optimisation.
Income balance shouldn't be too hard to balance. If 5 players earn say 1000 points a minute collectively, you just need to make it 1000 points a minute collectively for 4 players. So instead of individually earning 200 points a minute it's now 250 points a minute.

The income balance is fine and thats already in place. Its how you deal with the number of units available OR in this case how fast people can respawn units that have been lost. Because that's their current dilemma, they want to make it so units would be faster to respawn lost units, BUT you would still have overall less units than the enemy with a full team depending on the speed of respawn. Too slow and you will never catch back up, too fast and you would overwhelm. That's gonna be hard to find the right balance I think.

@@Bandanner and each player can only micromanage so many units effectively so losing a player means more units to manage for the rest of the team and thus the units lose effectiveness from there being less time to micromanage them. and if the player that left held an important position on the map the sudden additional strain for the remaining players to rush and hold the frontline that was broken will weaken every other spot the team is holding too
One thing for sure I feel like needed some real help was the performance. In last Beta I felt was abysmal. I had a real hard time getting the game to run smoothly.

Yeah some people had lots of issues, it was actually a lot better for me last time but I know you aren't the only person having issues. Hopefully they have made further improvements.
Did they say anything about the ability to take out the same unit but with different load outs? e.g. like for the VDV Spetznatz being able to select 2 squads with anti-infantry load out & 2 squads with AT load out.

No I don't think so, but I wondered that during the beta too. Because the fact you couldn't do it was odd in one sense.

@@Bandanner The game has been in 'development' since 2016 and the developers have missed every single self-imposed deadline to date, sometimes by several months. It's nothing like an exaggeration, it's more betting on firmly established precedent.

I would have hoped so... but that's an interesting point, I don't remember if they ever specifically mentioned skirmish. The AI is in to some extent but so far its been scripted missions... we will have to see!

They should focus on MP and just get that done and released early. SP can come later. Majority of people will buy this for MP in any case and wont touch SP. Much like Warno or Steel Div. Or just release early access...I would pay full price and play a bunch if I could get even the MP Beta until release.

So people keep wrongly assuming this. Around 80% of RTS players are single player only, so its actually MORE important they have the Single Player finished. The ratio of 80% single player to 20% multiplayer is also true for Eugen games. WARNO having MP seemingly ready first is just because they released it into Early Access. You will note the held back the Army General campaigns for full release ;)

@@Bandanner Curious where this data comes from and also about the detail on this. Is this the % of players who start a SP campaign? How many finish the campaign? What's the % of these players that play the game long term vs MP players? (replayability) A good metric will be to see how many people play (and finish) the expected SP Beta vs how many people played the MP Beta. Personally me and many of my friends buy these games and never touch the SP or get bored very quickly with them. Its the MP that brings me back to the Eugen games

@@Conman51US the stats are a well accepted industry standard. Eugen has confirmed on stream before the figures are correct. I believe the original company that mentioned it was Blizzard. Google it. And the around 80% are considered single player only. Sorry we have this discussion every other week. 😜 But basically multiplayer is the minority we just like to feel important. Because "our friends" play MP... Go figure the single player people dont play with us ;)
So with luck the game will go on release for 2025 more or less? with 1 or 2 more betas i think with luck

Were you able to play the beta on your laptop? I have to be honest that's a very very old graphics chipset (17 years old) and integrated rather than dedicated, I would not expect it to run on that sadly. And while price has not been announced, I would expect $40 minimum.

Just scrap Unity and redevelop the entire game and release in 25-26 I can't believe they used Unity, I feel like this is going to stall out and we won't get to play a good competitor to WARNO

I assume you are joking ;) Because that defiantly never gonna happen. Redeveloping the game from scratch in another engine along with all the tools, scenario editor etc would not be a 2026 release. It would take another 3-5 years minimum (This is the turn around time for most games), AND on top of that additional time for the team to learn to use and code in an entirely new engine. PLUS all the money that's been spent so far would have been for nothing.

It's going to have a single player campaign! Plus the scenario editor is the same tool they are using so we can make our own missions, not sure about putting them into a campaign. BUT there will be plenty of single player content. :)
