New Beginnings | Our Off Grid Life in Bulgaria #14

We take the first steps towards being self sufficient, creating our very own Off Grid Homestead in rural Bulgaria.
We're Phil and Kayleigh, a husband and wife living in rural Bulgaria with our two children, Alex and Ember. It's always been our dream to live a more self-sustainable life off grid. So, we've sold all our belongings, escaped the rental rat race and bought a plot of land. Complete with a derelict house and 3 barns, we hope to create our new life mortgage free. We've faced lots of hurdles already, so hang on tight as we show you highs and lows of moving abroad and starting again.

Don't worry about the water bill most probably won't be more than £100 for the whole period. Also, you probably already know that almost everyone in Bulgaria has a water borehole in the villages and with a water pump they water their crops with underground water in Bulgaria, which is abundant.

We are desperate for a borehole. We are actually one of the only properties without a well in our village, which is strange as our land used to be a very successful vineyard. Maybe there's one hiding somewhere!

Love this video, life really does look great for you all. Kayleigh I love when you said about planting your seedlings is a typical part of your day rather than having to wait for the weekend, such a lovely feeling that you are control of your own time. You wait until those swallow babies look over the top of their nests, you will love it. I'm glad you mentioned the banana plant Phil, sorry about the damage but looks like it will be ok. Bless Alex, he is so grown up for 7 but how scary (and brave) for you guys, I thought you might follow him with the drone. He loved it though obviously. Stripe is super friendly and cute. Hilarious about the Epay English speaking lady. We filled a largish pool and the bill was just 40 leva, our monthly bill worked out around 10 leva! Great video again, loving the content as its good to change it up sometimes. As for the water bill, It seems (as per quite a few comments) we're all in the same boat, I have tried time and again to get mine paid and everywhere just says there is no bill. I eventually got it paid after 4yrs and it was 150 leva 🙂. Just a tip for the water bottle planters, run a lighter (flame) of some sort over the top edge once they're cut and it wont be sharp in case the little ones go near them. Well done Alex for your first adventure and for chocolate too which would have been my go to reward. Walkie talkies are awesome, I have a set and they're well handy. Good evening, I thoroughly enjoyed your video last night. We also have migratory birds each year, namely house martins and storks, and they are busy sitting on their nests and searching for food. We hope you have success with your seeds, seedlings and fruit trees. With regards your water bill, the water companies do appear to be a bit lax in sending out bills, but you will eventually get one. Of course, the star went to the shop for chocolate, and came home with a dog as well as the chocolate, only he can do that. Looks like you have an addition to the family !! Yeah, the water bill situation is usually a pain. When I bought my village house last november, I went through sorting that out as well. I went to the regional office of the water company, showed them the proof of ownership and they found the previous owner's account number. Since there was no recent reading, they couldn't give me a bill. They did give me the phone number for the person that is keeping track of the readings in my area. So I took a photo of our reading and sent it to that person via viber. Then I was told it would take like a month for them to file the reading and another month until a bill was available. Couple months later I paid my ~100 leva bill. The account number remains the same apparently, just the name attached to it changes, now it is my name. It's good to add that number to your online banking so you don't have to physically go to easy pay. Paying once every 6 months for water is normal in the villages. You can just send your reading every 3 months and you should be fine, they'll keep track of it and send you the bill. Hope this helps.

Don't worry about the water bill. The price point can change a bit depending on the region but it's around 3 leva per cubic meter (m3). This is quite normal for Bulgaria as we tend to pay it whenever it comes up. Usually they generate the "normal" usage and it might not actually match up with your meter. It's like forecasting in some cases as most meters are analog. For example they assume you consumed few cubic meters (one cubic metre is equal to 1,000 litres) and add it to the bill. But if your measurement is far behind their measurement it means you've already paid it off in advance. For example in their system the meter number is paid till 12500 but your meter is on 12000 so you have 500 m3 to catch up. (just an example) It can go both ways tho, sometimes if a pipe bursts (inside the house) and your meter is above their mesurement and they will ask you to pay the difference. Hope it doesn't go that way. Good luck .

Unfortunately you have made the same mistake I made with my first planted trees. The rootstock should be dug underground (you can easily see the line between the graft and rootstock, it's the weakest point). I had a couple of trees snapped because of the strong wind, so adding a thick stick or pole is essential in this situation. I don't know where you bought the trees but usually people from nurseries who sell them in the markets explain how to plant them, I didn't listen, and had to buy more trees...

Seeds should be sprouted in wet paper napkins inside ziplock bags for a day or two. Then planted but this should have been done in February or March so by late April or May they can be planted outside. Planting seeds now may not produce any veggies at all because Bulgaria has a short planting and harvesting window. Maybe next year. Also, you need to plant at least 50 or 60 plants of each kind because done will die and some will not produce fruit. You are a family of four and what you’ve planted will not produce enough for one of you. Research is vital.

Thanks for the advice - as you would have been able to tell from the video, we are not expecting to be able to feed the family on what I've planted. I've done some research, I've spoken to the local babas and I'm learning step at a time. ☺️ The seeds have already sprouted through the soil so it will be interesting to see what happens. Thanks for your support and taking the time to comment 🌱

Your water company is mandated in law to visit once a month. However, it is known that many homes never are read. Janet is absolutely correct a photo is essential. The meter should been fitted by a designated installer of the water company, often they live in the village. Another reason they don’t chase your bill is that your bill will be at today’s rate per cubic metre and water is far more expensive (rich English) than previous years. Also, the water company can calculate your bill on the day from that photo. Then have to argue with them 😂 (welcome Bg) and they’ll maybe eventual take your money and issue a receipt. This is what I do. Originally I never paid a bill 6-7 years. But I don’t live Bg full time. Great content, glad to see the young fella out and about this will really force his Bulgarian. That roof over the Caravan is top notch 👍👍Блъгодаря.

Phil, I agree with you on the plan about the driveway and to level things up and not just in that direction but be sure to check where your land starts and ends it would be a shame if you miss spots bc of all those trees and bushes so even if its hard I would suggest straight up get rid of the bushes. But yeah Easypay is amazing taxes, ehem speeding tickets.🥲you get it all sorted out there. Now about your water, don't worry so much my water meter lady for example had my number and I would just send her a picture on the phone each month and if I couldn't she would write a larger sum and deduct the difference in my bill next month. At the end I had an automatic one so she did not need to come anymore...I think...😅Anyway these water things I aint nothing new its part of the experience. Also that is one friendly doggo just keep it the dog distribution system decided him and Alex are a fit.
