New Bass Compressor and Bass Distortion Pedals | The Janek Gwizdala Podcast #279

Музыка

Does the bass world really need yet another distortion and compression pedal? There are literally 100's of each to choose from at this point, and it is no longer a surprise when a new builder pops up and announces a new one has arrived.
I have some of them, but by no means all. I've played a lot of them, but not every single one. In my humble opinion, one that isn't being paid for by anyone, these two pedals from Lusithand have rather a lot of music to offer us. I hope you enjoy the longer podcast format for pedal stuff. Let me know in the comments if you want more of it.

When I get to the compressor I keep saying “dip switches” when I of course meant toggle switches. 🤦🏻‍♂️ You guys know what’s up though. 🙏

Thank you so much for having a go at our pedals, Janek. For someone who didn't read the manuals (who does?), you got most things right just by listening and intuition. Just a few pointers, on the 'Ground & Pound', the Clean side of the Mix has very light compression. This helps with melding the clean and distorted signals together in a more organic way. I like this pedal better, played with a pick on a lower gain setting or a grindier tone but, as you can see, it can get nastier. (I forgot to mention, this design was inspired by Justin Chancellor and the distortion has a V shape EQ on it). The Alma Comp's EQZ switch changes the center point from where the EQZ control will act upon. The Alma, when powered with 18v can run, internally, on 36v due to its Voltage Doubling capabilities. This is especially helpful for hotter instruments. Thank you once again Janek, it was a good surprise to wake up to this video!!!

That's why I was feeling a little natural compression with the ground and pound at a certain setting! Thank you for confirming my ears still work 🤣

I'd like to take a moment to thank Pedal Studio for enabling my addictive personality to splurge on pedals, instead of various chemical substances. Which is more fun, you may ask? The jury is still out, but at the very least I still have my pedals and dignity at the end of the night.

When you mentioned the disto being based on a Proco RAT I thought of Justin Chancellor and lo' and behold you got there around midway through the video. Love how raw Chancellor's approach to bass playing is. I love that he often trades the lead role with Adam. His board is far from easy to replicate haha. Regarding the demos, I appreciated enough to subscribe. I trained as a healthcare professional so my music training was sacrificed at the expense of my medical training but my approach to music is very scientific all the while knowing that it is an artform. I appreciate your approach which to me is both artistic and scientific at the same time. I approach many artforms this way like cooking for example; both an art and a science. I digress, for what it's worth, great job!

Hello Janek, 'compressor freak' here (have lots of different ones), I agree with you, explaining sound with words is quiet... inadapted, but explaining 'Compression' is another animal & they all sound different and have their own perks. I rarelly use them for 'dynamics', more like an aesthetic ,choice Thank you for sharing your experience, take care and have a great day! ps I do come from "Lusitania", lol!

So is there a chance you can compare the stomp with the zoom b6. as a bass player, I was drawn to the zoom due to it being easier to build patches. I’m interested to know your opinion of that digital pedal board

The zoom is not something I’m interested in using. From everything I’ve heard it’s a long way behind the Line6 stuff. The cheaper price and the bulkier design definitely speaks to that on a surface level. I don’t know why anyone would think it was easier to create a patch in one device over another. The stomp has 8 blocks in each preset, and you have three main knobs to control the settings. You also have HX Edit on the computer if you plug the device in via usb. The quality of the stomp car outweighs anything I’ve ever heard from zoom, and it would be a little unfair to compare the two.
