Thanks a lot for the tutorial. My old ballast only has one yellow wire. It has the two blue and the two red and the main line wires black and white. Home Depot and Lowes do not have a similar available. One of the store assistants said to just use one of the yellow and cover the other. But only one bulb come on. I will have to check with a local guy who know about electricity, and in the meantime that room has to remain off.

Yes, I found out this exact same thing. Apparently they don't make the other ones anymore because they are less energy efficient.
Thank you for this. I had a four wire ballast and was able to adapt your method to the eight wire. Very helpful.
Helped me out here at work. Great vid 👌
Thanks for making this
Jon, I have the same fixture and Ballast that you have here. The way you wired this is right but it should be noted that that ballast is for 95w-110w bulbs. I found out the hard way. I'm using 75 watt bulbs. It worked but if I turned the light off and back on, it wouldn't come back on. Called the company and they informed me it was because the bulbs weren't high enough wattage. Thanks for this tutorial it really helped me.

LOL. you should watch the building of those racks. kzread.info/dash/bejne/eXipubyKcc2ahNI.html
I was really feeling you until you showed what not to do in more detail than what to do i.e. the wiring you made w/ 6 inch strips. I'm not hating but I'm a hands on learner as are many, and if it's visual diagram veers off course then so do I. Good video, it's been over a decade since I've fooled w/ florecent lighting and this was a fun recourse ;D
What is the reason for crossing the blue wires?
Can you shoot one yellow wire into each tombstone openings and just jump both sides with a small yellow wire . instead of making the X cross a simple U reaching both sides.
@JONSDIY

I don't quite understand what you are trying to say. Are you saying cross the wires in the tombstone at the opposite socket locations. If this is what you mean, I tried that and it did not work for me.
What if they turn on and go right back off? I just replaced a 30 yr old ballast. Everything is hooked just like shown. What's wierd if I unhook one light the other works fine. If I have them both hooked up the flash and go back off.

This does not sound like a ballast issue but your neon tube issue. It sounds like you have a hairline crack in one of your tubes. When the gas is charged it expands and with a crack it will immediately turn back off as vacuum seal is broken by the expansion of the gas. Swap it out with another light and see if this resolves the problem.

@@JONSDIY ok thanks! I have replacements I'll see if that fixes the issue.
How do you get old wire out of the end where bullb hooks.

I am trying to find a replacement for my malfunctioning ballast but - like yours - they all have 6 output wires but the existing ones have 7 outputs so Im wondering what to do with the extra "additional" wire? Sorry realise this is a very basic question!

Need to know how many lamps are in your fixture. You might have bought a 3 lamp ballast.

@@MikeTheBike2010 Ok, tell me the make and model of this ballast and we will figure it out.
I have 2 4 bulb lights that were removed from an office, mounted them to the ceiling and ran the black,white and green to the plugin, POP trips breaker. Opened them up and disconnected the 2nd one and the first one works, disconnected the first and tried the 2nd light, works. connected them back in series and POP trips breaker. I'm lost! White is neutral, Black is power and green is ground. Any ideas?

Couple of things first. Do you have a refrigerator or icebox in your garage? Second does anything else in the house lose power when the breaker is thrown? Was the box (the thing the neon tubes sit in) grounded to the outlet before you hung it. Does the outlet itself have a ground wire and are you tied into it. Sounds like a ground issue but don't rule out surge if you have a fridge.

@@JONSDIY This is in an out building/workshop, nothing was connected except the lights, since i use a small welder the line is 30 amps (storm caused a power outage) that's why we decided to install the lights and we used a generator with a 20amp breaker on it, probably a good thing as 30 would burn something. hmm the plugin we were using does have the ground prong broken off , it was just an old cord we wired up. Drill,saws, street light all worked fine tho, it's just connecting the 2 lights together it pops the breaker. Thanks in advance if i'm slow to reply. EDIT: Power is back on but i'm not going to connect the lights to the 30 amp line and the generator is back in the barn so it might be a few days before i can get back to the lights.

@@Per409 One very common cause or possibility that may initiate tripping in a GFCI breaker is the fact that it may be faulty. Many times, close lightning strikes cause faulty breakers, and they need to be replaced. Since you say that you use a welder and support up to 30amp I would rule out the load. With a lightning storm close by anything is possible with electric lines.
@Per409

@@JONSDIY No not lightning this was after the wind storm, no close by lightning, good rain tho. Power outage was the reason we decided to put the lights up and try them out,, not much else to do with no power. So we got the generator and it has no problems as everything we tried with it worked fine including a 110v 12,000 btu AC. For some reason connecting both lights keep tripping the breaker. I think now i'll just run 2 lines and use 2 plugins one for each light
