    Well, no doubt about it. When my Chugger pump gives up the ghost this will be my new pump. Excellent job ANVIL. Thank you for the video.

    Thank you and I agree they did a great job as I feel something between the small Anvil chugger and the Riptide was needed. My first Anvil Pump at about 3 years of age actually stopped working shortly after this arrived. My others are still chugging along.

    I got to meet John Blichmann recently, and although I only spent a short time talking and working with him, I learned a bit in a very short time and he wasn't even trying to teach me anything. He just retired on the 1st, but I expect he will still be watching to ensure things continue moving in the right direction. He treated all of his employees like family and took a ton of pride in what everyone was doing at the company.

    Informative video, Mike. Thanks for going into so much detail. FYI: the current Blichmann Riptide Tri-clamp pump also has the vent port you can put a hose on. Not sure when they added that as my first one does not have it, but my second Riptide I bought in December during their Christmas Riptide sale has it. It is definitely a nice addition. I don't know if they plan to add it to the Riptide NPT or not, but hopefully they will.

    That is awesome to know! I appreciate that info as I was there last month and saw a ton of NPT Riptides being assembled and quality checked, but didn't take notice to any changes. I would expect it will eventually have it too. I'll have to ask when I get a chance, incase anyone else asks me.

    Im in the market for a pump. My Amazon pump is not pushing wort fast enough through my CFC and I need an upgrade. I didnt realize you arent supposed to run boiling liquid through it as I do that at the start of my chilling process. This should be an upgrade over my current pump but I dont know for sure.. thanks for putting this on my radar!

  • @BitterRealityBrewing

    @BitterRealityBrewing

    I've used this for 3 brews so far and I run 2 to 3 seconds of boiling wort through it usually 2 to 3 times during the brew. Then when I start the chill with my Jaded Scylla, I start the pump up again usually around 200 F but the temp drops really fast as usual. I was moving my wort to my fermenter and the metal was still a bit hot on the pump but the wort was at 70F. I think it is a great upgrade without paying the premium for a Riptide that is amazing, but might be overkill for most home brewers.

    This is Drew here from Blichmann. I think not running boiling liquid through a pump is something that a lot of people are not aware of. The physics of running boiling wort through a pump is really interesting. The pump requires liquid to lubricate the impeller and keep it cool as it runs at high RPM. As you already know when you boil liquid it changes to steam. When the liquid is at a boiling point and you run it through a pump it causes some liquid to turn into steam. At that point, the impeller does not have the lubrication it needs. Without the lubrication, it starts to heat up as friction causes heat. What we typically see is that over time the heat will cause the impeller to deform as the plastic softens when it gets too hot. We work hard on materials to make sure this is not something that occurs in a few seconds, but the real danger is leaving it on for a length of time. After the impeller is deformed it most commonly locks up. I hope this helps explain the why behind that recommendation.

    😂And I think just before I start the camera how dirty they look. Other than a quick Star San clean-up, I sometimes use a tiny pea-sized piece of coconut oil to shine them up a bit. When I visited Anvil Brewing recently, they told me they had learned that trick from me and had been using it up until recently as a vendor sold them something that worked better. Thanks for the compliments.

    Who lives in a pineapple under the sea. He uses an anvil pump that's npt. But seriously . I wish I could sell three quarters of my brewing equipment. Because everything just keeps getting better and better. ( sounds like beetle juice.) I'm like a squirrel that sees a shiny object and I gotta have it. (According to my wife.) does it have an on and off switch? Or did I miss that. It looks very nice. The price is right. It's now on my list.😊

    😂I saw a meme recently (I think that is what kids call it now days) where there was a guy spending crazy money to have all the toys and they were all home brewing gadgets. It does have an off and on switch which is sealed to help keep moisture out. I just liked that Anvil brought this out as I feel too many people jump to the RipTide and really could save some money with a nice pump that is a bit cheaper, but still is a quality pump. My wife keeps offering to make more space in my brew space, by giving or throwing away everything. She scares me sometimes. (Hell, I'm lying, she scares me most of the time.) I've got to get my feet on my tread mill before she gives that thing away.

    My original Anvil pump died after about 20 brews. I would never suggest that pump to anyone ! The newer one looks ...ok. Stuck mash on the Anvil? Use a bag and that stops immediately. I use a bag and never have stuck mashes. My cleanups are much faster and my efficiency is high due to my grind. So be nice to us who use a bag on the Anvil. 😊

    My 11yr old Chugger is still going. It's mounted to my Top Tier via a Blichmann pump mount. Anyone know if this Anvil pump's mounting holes match the March/Chugger pumps? If they match, I may splurge on the extra $25 and get the Anvil XP vs the Riptide head upgrade for my Chugger.

    @@GentleGiantFan Sorry it took a bit, but Blichmann just came back with this info. Sadly, not good news, but great info at the end of the day. This pattern does not match the March, Chugger, or RipTide. The hole pattern is 82mm (3.23”) x 85mm (3.35”) L x W. There are slotted holes for 5mm screws or smaller, 11mm in length, aligned with the length of the pump.

    Hi Mike, Very informative and I'm looking into getting that pump. One question for you or for anyone. I have a couple of Anvil kettles and various other items from Anvil and I like them because of good quality and price point. How come whenever I look up Anvil and Blichmann equipment, they make Anvil I know, you always get that warning by California's prop 65. I know California is always trying to control you in some way or another, like other state governments. Sorry, for bringing that up. But, I don't see that pop up with other brewing companies. Maybe they all have that nickel metalic in their product or maybe Blichmann is the only one trying to do the right thing. Thank you in advance and cheers.

    Sorry for the delay, as I didn't even realized I'd missed this. I am pretty sure it is a "CYA", by being honest to avoid being banned in CA. I've asked Blichmann Engineering to reply to your comment as soon as they have a moment. To ensure I get you the correct answer. (I'm a Floridian according to a recent survey, supposedly we don't like CA, and they don't like Florida. LOL.) I always think it is funny that I can't imagine earthquakes, but every time I get to speak to someone from CA on the first visit to Florida (when they are moving here) they seem terrified about Hurricanes, which I find entertaining. I always tell them they are better than earthquakes as we can see them coming.

    @gene5780, Great question! Mike was getting it as well, but yes in the state of California, you need to have a warning on products sold there that are impacted by Proposition 65. You should find that any company that sells to CA will have the same type of notice on the website and on the product to keep them in compliance (i.e. the item contains Nickel...in our stainless steel, which allows it to become such a versatile alloy). Anvil Brewing Equipment and our sister company Blichmann Engineering are in compliance with Prop 65, and if you don't see the warning on the other brewing companies, which you referenced, their products might not contain elements under Prop 65, they don't sell to CA, or they have another way to communicate it. We always try our best to ensure our customers are informed and empowered, and we are authentically sharing information. So I hope that helps? If you have any questions, here is a quick link to Proposition 65...oehha.ca.gov/proposition-65. Cheers!

I'm not forcing or hard-selling anyone on any products. If anything, in this video, I'm telling a lot of home brewers they don't need to buy a RipTide as this is a great pump that might save them some money, assuming they are in the market for a new pump.
