New and Strange Seismic Swarm and Lava Barriers to Protect Grindavik are in the Making
It's a race against the clock to build fortifications to protect Grindvík, but when they are ready, we can probably say that everything that can be done has been done. The project comes with a hefty price tag or somewhere around 5 Billion ISK to protect 150 Billons's worth of houses and infrastructure. I am however starting this video with todays earthquake swarm that was a bit strange. The MET office spoke about them as triggered from tension due to the magma intrusions lately, but tonight, Prof. Ármann Höskuldsson spoke about the need to make lava barriers in Hafnarfjörður to protect the metropolitan area from the Krísuvík volcanic system. That sounds like a strong statement to me that indicates where the volcano/rifting events might be up for next, and I will cover that's story of course. I have all the footage to do so already.

I just love your updates! You don't try to make the problems there seem more than they are. You present the current situation in such a calm and professional manner, but you don't "sugar coat" it either. I agree with you, something is going to happen, but when, is always the question, isn't it? Thank you. And I hope you have a wonderful New Year in 2024! 🎉🎉
I just love the sound of your voice, and the melodic accent you use in your videos. I watch a few other iceland creators, but only your videos actually get watched as soon as I can see them. You have a way of cutting through all the details and sharing what I want to hear. :) You always make me feel like you've just greeted me like an old friend, invited me in out of the cold, and given me undivided attention. I don't know what it is, but I'm glad I discovered your channel. Definitely #1 when it comes to Iceland creators, top ten if you add in all of my other genres I watch. :)

The geothermal drones should do a lot of scouting now, looking for hot spots to help predict where the fissures will open when paired with seismometers and GPS measurements!
@freebirdh604
5 ай бұрын
I have very little knowledge of the effectiveness of those drones, would they be able to ‘see’ far enough into the earth, rocks, etc to be able to provide sufficient additional data to inform predictions. Than what the seismometers and gps already do… ( not challenging you, this is a genuine question 😊).
@eirintowne

@@freebirdh604 I want to know all that, too! From what I have seen so far, my guess is surface temperatures only, but when you see a bunch of hot spots in an area that otherwise appears completely normal, I would definitely hesitate before getting physically close!

@@freebirdh604I don't think these cameras penetrate the ground at all, they just read surface temperature, which will be higher of course if more heat is warming it up from underneath.
@Vulcano7965

That's not a sure way to predict it. Magma underground is very well insulated and heat takes years or decades to reach the surface. Fissure eruptions occur fast, in a matter of hours or even minutes, so you have even the same chance of spotting the opening with a cheaper, visible light drone.
To the point, professional and short. I like these updates a lot. Thank you!

Thank you, Just Icelandic. These videos are hard to watch, but I so appreciate that I found you back when it all started up again back in 2021. I think of all the people who have been forced to leave their homes. And those that were re-settled from when the island was evacuated now forced out a second time. I know this is your daily life, intellectually, but emotionally, it’s difficult. All I can do is watch and hope and pray…. A friend from the US Northeast wishing you all the very best possible outcomes. 🌋
Thank you for the update. I hope they get the berm defense up for grindavik before another eruption. Happy New year. Prayers for you all

I have to wonder if they're going to put up the berm, and then have the eruption within the perimeter. That would be so tragic, but it is a possible outcome, I'd think!?

Thanks for the update, Gylfi. I love your balanced, informative reports, not just from the geological point of view but also (and more importantly) regarding the impact on life in Grindavik now and in the future - it’s something that can be easily overlooked in all the excitement of eruptions. Also lovely to hear the placenames being pronounced by a native Icelandic speaker 😊And the drone footage is spectacular! Stay safe!

It may be expensive to build a berm now, but its a investment for the future, I guess. If I understood it correctly, we can expect volcanic activity on the Reykjanes peninsula for the next 200 years - so its most likely not the last berm that needs to be build. Sure, its not a perfect protection, but the best we can do for now. At the end... the volcanos always win.
Good morning Gylfi, Thanks for the update. It looks like it’s going to be a hot year in iceland and I read this could go on for some years. Let’s hope for the best. I remember the eruption in 1973 very well. Very impressive and frightening images on the news then. Winter is finally coming to the Netherlands; it’s getting colder already. What we now call winter would probably be called mild in Iceland. It was much colder and there was much more snow when I was young. I remember -17°C where I lived back then in the southeast of the country. Stay sage

Idea also when techtonic plate movement starts, it tends to flow along the plate boundary like water in a river. It’s not too surprising that you are now seeing possible action to the N NE from Grindavik along the boundary and waking up some of the hotspots that brings magma to the surface! It’s great that they are able to protect Grindavik with the barriers bc of how fast the lava moves probably due to silica poor lava. If the lava mixes with salt water then toxic gases will be released. I hope the town does recover. Your updates are very much appreciated. Looking forward to your next update.

So many different things happening already this year. I really hope the berm at Grindavik is either not needed or does its job properly when the time comes. I'm trying to imagine the scale of berm needed to protect Reykjavik, but with how quickly the ones at the power plant and Blue Lagoon went up, and now this one I think your planning people will not see it as a difficult task. What do you think would happen to the lake near the new swarm and uplift should the red stuff pop up close to it? It looks so calm and beautiful there like many parts of Scotland and it would be shame if it was destroyed. My thanks as always Gylfi 💜🌋🦄

Very many thanks once again! I hope the disturbances at Krisuvik won't affect the capital. At the tender age of 10 (first visit to Iceland with my family) it did seem odd that the capital city should be a place called 'Reykjavik' i.e. 'smoking creek', even if the 'smoke' was vapour from the hot springs and vents that give the modern city its hot water and other benefits. It must be very trying for the inhabitants of Grindavik, and also for the people who work at the Blue Lagoon and the power plant - and for those whom the power plant supplies with electricity. I really do hope for an early resolution even if it is an eruption to put an end to this enervating and apparently never-ending waiting game.

I am delayed while watching your updates, but it is still worth it even if the next eruption happened meanwhile, today morning 14.01.2024. So sad to see the youngest new fissure which opened around lunch time at the side of the houses of Grindavik. I follow up specially as I visited Island for my first time in June 2023 and drove through Grindavik about a dozen times. It might be fascinating to see volcanoes, but not people losing their home or become danger for their lives.

Rather unscientific but the fissure North of Grindavik seemed almost like a safety valve, in that the magma did not need to find a single weak spot but found 3.5 km of it in one go to let it all out out of reach. Hopefully the Gods will continue to favour the inhabitants of this town.

Seems to me like the tectonic plate gap is 'locked'( strongly solidified & not melting/cracking up) under Iceland while the gap is getting more active & hotter. It looks like the magma is being funneled into systems down the line thru 'weaker' & open dykes. And it also seems to be coming from the other end (the hotspot) too. Would blasting a drainage ditch from the fisure to the ocean not be the fastest, cheapest, and quickest way to put in a defense measure for grindivk? You could even push the loose material up from the ditch to form the berm without having to haul material?
Would it make sense to install giant pumps to spray ocean water at the lava flows? How big of a pump can be made? Can many smaller pumps work? Is the distance too far? Should they build a second wall and contain water like a moat?
