NEW $99 SHIMANO SLX Detailed Inside and out Overview. $99 Tranx 200?

The New Shimano SLX is Shimano's latest attempt to take over the $99 baitcaster market. For a $100 baitcaster fresh out of the box I like it's size, fit, finish and feel. And it proves ball bearing count is meaningless. I don't know whether or not this thing is going to be the best $100 reel. Only time will tell. But I know loyalists to the Green Curados are going to be all over this. (and remember guys...this is not a review....just an unboxing, overview, initial impressions and tear down)

Just bought this reel for my son as he just started fishing and this being his first baitcaster the only birds nest he got was his first cast as he tried to cast it without putting his thumb on the reel. He hasn't had a single backlash after that and on some days it was really windy, the reel performed flawlessly. He loves this reel and the fact that he can get out there fishing with us and enjoy it is well priceless .

Shimano is what I consider a safe brand. They haven't released anything in a long time that I personally would consider trash... I loved my old chronarch d. That was a bad ass reel that was imo just as good as the newer e7 that came out. I had both those reels. The only reason I liked the e better was is was left handed. It's crazy because now, if you spend 100 most brands have developed offerings only dreamed about years ago. I'm not old at all I'm a young guy but I grew up bass fishing. Thank you again for the videos these are golden.

Thank you Nick. I know this is off the topic of this video. But I am getting a new ultralight spinning reel for a trout fishing trip this fall and I can’t decide between the Daiwa Tatula 1000 or the Shimano Ultegra 1000. I like the Daiwa but I don’t think I would ever need 250 yards of 4 lbs test for trout fishing. I know you recommended the Tatula 2000 but that reel holds 340 yards of 4 lbs test. Thank you for all the great work.

I find that if you put a dab of grease on the drag click spring, plunger and the hole in the star drag makes its much easier to get it together and keep it in place when assembling. Gives a little "adhesive" to keep everything together and from falling apart. Hope it helps. Love my SLXs.

18:30 when you are lookin if the pinion is supported by a bearing i wonder if there is a spot for an extra bearing molded in the sideplate. So could one jus stick a extra bearing in there and have it work meaning theres an xship build in just short of an bearing. It’s like that in many shimano spinning reels, no xship but there is a spot machined/molded in the frame for a bearing that you can add and then it is exactly the xship double pinion support

I have a daiwa CT type R that I bought brand new 5 years ago and on my first trip out, maybe even first cast, I started feeling a grind and an uneven grind on the retrieve. Haven't used it sense. Was thinking of sending it to daiwa, but I would rather spend extra to support you if that's something you're interested in.

A few years ago i was also given a Calcutta 200A from the same friend. It looked well used and something was grinding inside, i took it apart and one of the plastic gears was missing a couple teeth. Would this reel be worth fixing? I wonder if their are any parts available for these 1st gen calcutta’s?

Hi Tackle Advisors, I love your videos and think you give some of the best info on youtube. Because you know the reel industry so well, I would like to ask your opinion on a reel purchase. I am looking for a baitcaster that I will use to throw 1-2 ounce lures in saltwater for fish no bigger than 15 lbs. I fish from shore so I need to make long casts. My friend uses a tranx 200 and it works perfectly for the situation, but I don't think i want to spend that much on a reel. Do you think the slx will do the job, or would I need to get something a little beefier like the tatula 200? thanks

x-ship actually refers to an extra bearing under the spool tension knob that supports the top of the pinion gear. x-ship reels also have a cold forged main gear, but the bearing is the most important feature. I'm not trying to be a kno-it-all, I just thought you may want to know the slx is indeed not x-ship. thanks for the great vids. big fan. always looking for your next vid

I look at x ship as 2 bearing supporting the pinion......It's a stupid marketing name given to things they've done for a loooong time. 2004 on some reels. what's interesting is....what makes this reel 99$ and the tranx 200....200$ Thanks Man!!!

I've got a St Croix mojo bass 7'0 heavy frog rod that I throw jigs with, I think the extra weight of the Fuego CT would balance nicely. Other than that, I have no need for a reel that size I'm a pike fishermen who fishes a 300 Lexa WN. So these reels don't interest me too much. Is the drag of the Fuego LT sticky because of the felt?

Giveaway suggestion for ya. Everytime you use the phrase "And it's with all that being said." You reach into your plug bag and send a lure to the 1st person that correctly answers how many times you said it in the video. A friend of mine constantly uses that phrase, that's why it jumps out at me. But on a serious note, glad to hear you are getting the views and support from followers and fellow content creators. Keep it up brother.

Yeah, you'd be in trouble for sure. Question for you, are you doing tear down videos on reels you get from J&H exclusively, or are you still accepting subscriber reels and using them for tear downs as well?

It seems every time I mention upcoming reels. I get flooded with offers. A few things occured that turned me off to accepting reels from guys like you. I've received more than a hands worth of fingers in reels that look to have been submerged at the bottom of a lake. And these were for reels submitted for review. And they stated they were like new. So that's 50$ out of my pocket to ship back un touched. And in some cases I jumped through hoops to get them repaired and then got stiffed on parts costs...so that went out the window...That and threats...Since a PO box in my area is 30% of what I earn on youtube...I really can't go that route...and giving out my home address is not what I want to be doing (it's something i gave little thought to early on but it's front and center now..JandH makes it easy.....no worry about dead / beat up reels. And the unboxing initial impression / tear down vids are fun. I would like to accept reels from you guys. But I need to rethink the process.

@@TackleAdvisors you seriously get threats? That's a special kind of troll to threaten someone over a damn reel. So I can see how it just makes sense to team up with J&H or any other shop for that matter and deal with new in box reels. Well if you find yourself with a solution to tinkering with subscriber reels, I have a Calcutta 401D you can get your hands on. "And it's with all that being said" have yourself a good day sir.

You know I've always been turned away from using baitcasters from bad experience not knowing what I'm doing it's helpful watching your videos and little learn a little bit and I'm thinking about picking a couple of these up and getting a shot if I did win that I think I would throw 20lb maxcuatro in it I am a little scared two bird nest that line, but I'd get the best casting out of it using quatro so I think I would spool it up with that. And get another Baitcaster and test it using cheap mono until I get the hang of it, I noticed that you set the spool a certain setting! I never seen that before so it was helpful, now I have an idea that you want to set that just right not to lose, not to tight, but just right ...God knows I probably won't be able to get the hang of it in the first few hundred casts lol .....so using cheap mono is going to be a great idea. But seriously if I had that real I think I would throw some maxcuatro on there!! So i signed up following you on Instagram and following jnh god luck everyone Thanks for the videos I really do appreciate it actually watching the breakdown on the Saragosa lured me into purchasing one lol with all the X ship and X protect I ended up getting the 8000 series and I love it I threw it on the st. Croix Mojo rod and I'm a happy camper Definitely not a Stella but it's a poor man's Bentley I love it lol Thanks for the videos keep up the great work

I have a suggestin for ya. If you go with this reel (i have no clue how it casts and how friendly the brake is for noobs although i will) or any baitcaster. Don't worry about fancy braids on a baitcaster.....and don't go super thin. All braids will last much longer on baitcasters than with spinning...and casting performance differences are much less too. When you cast with braid......as the line comes off the spool......the diameter of the line remaining on the spool decreases....meaning less line comes off per revolution of the spool....THAT ADDS BRAKING! If you go with thin line like 20lb maxcuatro. The braking will be less. A good cheap braid would be suffix performance braid, daiwa j braid x 8, or berkley's new cheap stuff. (i'd go with a 30lb braid from them to start. And when familiar then go thinner if needed. I find braid easier to dig backlashes out of than mono but I've been using it for 20 years exclusively. Thanks for the follows!! And dude...the gosa is a tank.....and the 8k stella ain't catching any fish that the 8k gosa isn't :) You're welcome! Thanks for watching!

@@TackleAdvisors hey thanks a lot much appreciated I love suggestions any suggestion take everything with a grain of salt right so I'm glad you told me all this that makes sense that the diameter of the line coming off the real or decrease adding brake so going with about a cheap 30 pound test braid would work sufficiently. I've been so busy lately I haven't had any time to go fishing and its been bothering me. but one of the things I wanted to pick up and try again was either fly fishing or baitcasters both of them I suck at LOL but I'm seriously thinking about going baitcaster just for the casting ability, I saw a guy cast with one and it just blew my mind and I said to myself okay I want to do that. No question about it big casters cast insanely far much farther than my spinning reel and I can throw 2 ounces pretty far with it. So you been running baitcasters for a very long time and it sounds like even you still get bird nest as you were saying you found it easier to pull it out with the braids. Thanks again for the heads up I'll keep all this in mind when I give this a shot and I'll shoot you a message and let you know how it turned out course I don't know when that would be, but if I do I'll throw you a heads up Stay cool and thank you

Cool! Keep me posted. When learning...walk off about how much line you think you'll cast..and put a wrap of tape over the remainng line...That way backlashes won't go deep :) I've been around the block a time or two. I also spend or used to spend quite a bit of time on the casting field...Not a ton with with bass gear but hot rodded distance tournament setup reels and 12 and 13' heavers. (i actually have alimited to 50 Will Power reel in the mail which is quite possibly could be the fastest longest casting reel available out of the box today...Zzeta spool all sorts of custom goodies :) ) I'll be sure to blow that up a time or two. Lots of weird things happen when you try to push a lead out beyond 500 feet. But anyway..30lb braid is good to learn with...Get a cheap spool of j braid x 8 (maybe some of that kastking or godline...but I have used a few thousand yards of j braid x 8 and it's reliable and 500 yard spools can be found cheap on amazon.

Some reels are easier than others. I suggest work on a lint free soft surface so parts don't bounce...or you don't damage bearings or gears if dropped... (not like me...i work on a hard surface for filming purposes only and it's bitten me in the arse a few times) Setup a camera and film the teardown taking note of what went where and if it's a complecated arrangement take a second and film the direction, orientation and order in which everything went. Baitcasters are usually much easier than spinners. And take it easy with c clips only remove if absolutely needed. sometims a strong stream of water can get where you'd be able to get by removing them. And be careful where grease and oil gets....Grease can slow down a reel to the point it's not even usable...and would then need to be taken apart and more time spent cleaning it out.
