I really wish they would finish their "reviewing" of previous editions to release them in creative commons. With the death of Pathfinder 1e, someone needs to be able to pick up the 3.5 base rules and relaunch them. I know there is bloat to it but third is my favorite edition for numerous reasons. I have been using it for over 20 years.

The things they exclude, Owlbear, Beholder, Mordekainens, are the only actual things they own anyway.

Yeah I agree, WOTC says they will do something they previously said they would do. Shocking! Of course, they haven't actually done it yet. Nor have they released SRDs for the older editions under C&C, which they also said they would do. Even though they have again said they will do it, "later". "Matt Messier" LOL! I think you nailed the attitude of WoTC/Hasblow (sic) right there. I think since the Bros of Has have basically declared their intention to become a video game company foremost and a toy company second, they are conceding this arena to the players and consumers of TTRPGs to some extent. Independent producers really can't have the same reach or marketing value of the D& D name. Hasblows focus is on video game and virtual content and growing that market ( D&D GO will likely be made soon, spinning off the success of Monopoly GO) doesn't really collide with independent content anyway. LET THEM EAT CAKE. I'm sure they think we will all die off in the next 20 years.

The old module had all the work done on the front end with wonderful encounters and great factions but the bottom of the module was a big "Write your own". Fun if you did it but we never did. The Module gave stats for Zargon but I think he was a big dinosaur /reptillian / dragonish creature squatting in a room, alone, waiting for the party to come and kill him. Boring Your reimagining had two awesome final confrontations and a Boss fight well worth waiting for and completing.

A few points: 1) I love all Dungeon Craft videos. Keep them coming. 2) I was queued up to watch this, then had to go to an impromptu teams meeting. I mention this only to pad out the comment and feed the ravenous Al' go Rthym - a vile and capricious beast. 3) Your Lost City video was fun, though I enjoy The Reviled Society the most. 4) I'm all for D&D and support of the classic game, but I've finished giving Hasbro any more money. Mine goes to small scale producers, even for their 5e stuff. Partly out of solidarity, as a small scale producer of accessories myself. But mostly out of principle. It will take a long time of good-faith efforts by Hasbro to regain my trust - if they even can. WoTC I'd find an easier time with, and being able to shake loose of Hasbro's clutches would likely speed that process up. 5) No Deathbringer closing joke? I live for those.

Thanks for the video! None of this is in stone and probably won't happen or won't happen in the way they lead everyone to believe. The CC provides no protection from lawsuits, so that is a dead end. The New SRD is ABSOLUTELY NOT an agreement that are not going to initiate a lawsuit. The OGL v1.0a is still in effect and cannot be deauthorized or they would have followed through when they first meant to do so but figured out they were unable to do so. The OGL v1.0a has a breech and cure clause to protect anyone using it. There's no mechanism of deauthorization in the OGL v1.0a and, furthermore, the termination clause (13) in the license allows for iterations downstream from items terminated to survive such termination. (13. Termination: This License will terminate automatically if You fail to comply with all terms herein and fail to cure such breach within 30 days of becoming aware of the breach. All sublicenses shall survive the termination of this License.) So, provided you are using a license at least once removed from the original, and properly follow the license, you are protected by the license from any such termination. Long live the OGL v1.0a and all of the Open Game Content released under the OGL v1.0a with the promise of it being perpetual as stated in the original FAQ released with it. To deauthorize the license would open WotC to a massive fraud suit given all of the folks who used the license under that original promise. Keep all of this in mind after the new core books are released and we see how WotC handles when some confused content provider misuses the CC licensing or includes something in a release that hasn't been put under the CC by WotC.

  • @TheConfessor
    @TheConfessor2 ай бұрын

This makes perfect sense. They're not interested in D&D as a game. So releasing 5.5/2024/whatever edition under CC, they are trying to win back the good will of actual gamers, hoping to draw them into the D&D Beyond platform where they want primary play to occur and that they can then keep that audience for digital transactions and micro-transactions, while Hasbro focuses on presenting D&D as a lifestyle brand where the primary revenue of the IP is made in t-shirts, funko pops, legos, figures, and ten thousand other pieces of D&D branded widgets. It's a very, very smart business strategy. Because this isn't about good will. It never is. It never was. Hasbro is a business. They're in the business of making money and pleasing share holders.

We already could. You cannot copyright or trademark common nouns like “Strength”, “Intelligence”, “Dexterity”, “Wisdom”, “Constitution”, or “Charisma”. You also cannot copyright or trademark the names of entities which have existed in public domain literature for centuries, like “goblins”, or “ogres”. “Orcs” probably falls into the category of a genericized term, as it actually originated with Tolkien, even though it owes some of its heritage to Old English.

@6:40 I believe it is more accurate to assume the drastic mark up of Goodman Games' OAR books is primarily/only due to scarcity, a scarcity I'd bet caused by WotC not renewing their contract with Goodman Games. This is also likely the reason why Goodman Games has pivoted to converting Judges Guild modules instead of the WotC owned TSR modules. Also, I am under the impression that the production time for WotC books likely means that Quests from the Infinite Staircase was in production before your video.

I find your notebook looks great, think it would make running adventures faster & smoother, as well as being something that could be used again for another group or the same group that wants to try different options. I need to know the type of notebook, how you put in 3d maps, and of course how to decide what the difficulty die/challenge rating should be. What do you use as a legend? Don't get me wrong, it seems like it would be a lot of work up front. I already do a lot of work to create an adventure. I also would love to see the video of how you took an adventure, The Lost City, and put it in your dm notebook. In fact, I bet you could show us how to create an adventure that changes based on something at the start, similar to Ravenloft. That would be awesome because you could run it multiple times and it would be different each time. Yes, the Lost City is one of your best videos ever! Do you record game sessions? The OGL fiasco was because someone didn't understand the product. If Android got rid of 3rd party developers nobody would buy their phone. Even if at one point they could have tried to be like Apple, that ship has sailed. Their customers want a robust 3rd party ecosystem. Certain products just aren't standalone products and they depend on accessories and 3rd party companies.

I'm in the process of wrapping up an 18-month 5e campaign I converted from a 3.5 module, and I'll be doing an RPG "Anthology" series next where we try a bunch of different systems using one-shots and short adventures. My next long-form campaign will actually be based on Elden Ring using Runehammer's Crown & Skull. I'm very excited for it (although it's a ton of work converting all the Elden Ring material over to C&S mechanics/stats). I'll be curious to see what the SRD 5.2 has to offer in the future.

While they really can't copyright game rules, they can lock it up in court if they chose to, as Prof.DM mentions. They lost a great deal of goodwill due to the OGL, but moving in a direction that embraces 3rd party creators can only be good for everyone.

We see Hollywood failing because they alienated the fanbases, and we delight in their losses, but WE are losing too, we won't get the Star wars projects we want, we won't get a MCU Tv series that appeals to us, because they would be stupid to appease a group that has avowed to despise them. I haven't been paying too much attention to what WotC and Hasbro are doing with the 2024 Revision but I'm glad you're reporting on this because it's good to keep abreast of all this. It looks like WotC is going in the right direction with releasing the 5.2 SRD under Creative Commons, and as you said, learned from their mistake last year. I find it so interesting, though, how many gamers (usually old-timers like myself) refuse to even give them a chance again. I want D&D to make a turnaround, for the very reason that it is generally the gateway drug for other RPGs. Any time I've run a group at the schools I've worked at, there's been interest in trying out others. Sometimes, though, I really worry that the damage is done, at least for the foreseeable future. The interest is still there for new generations, but I worry about the quality of future editions. The best safeguard for quality is diffusion, and that's what the OGL opens up. Now I guess we just wait for the next scandal and keep playing like we always have.

When the Black Flag project got underway, I supported it. I decided to use Tales of the Valiant going forward. Thats primarily because I'm not a fan of the virtual direction WoTC is taking. That said, if WoTC releases a good product, I'll get it. I pre-ordered the Making of OD&D and the Infinite Staircase book shown in this video. I also preordered the licensed Worlds & Realms book. D&D 5.2's DMG is including Greyhawk and that may be a draw for me if its good since thats my perfeered setting. So all of that to say I appreciate the balanced approach of this video.

I agree that this is a good move. WotC is making sure that Dungeons & Dragons will live on for a long time, which is a really good thing. We can play copies, clones and "same but different" versions, but D&D is still going to be the greatest role playing game in the world. These are good times to play RPGs.

WotC never looked at the cooperative nature of their own product. They didn’t realize that the DMs and the players are quite often the same person in different games. They didn’t consider that all of those third-party creators are making materials that require the core rulebooks too. They wanted all the loot, not just their share of it. If WotC was smart, they would reach out to you with a yearly salary offer. They could pay you $50k a year to do your weekly video uploads with a simple “powered by D&D” logo in the corner and it would cost them less than a single television or magazine ad. They could do that with Bob, Ginny D, AJ Picket, Jorphdan and a couple others to create a marketing strategy that would drive their sales through the roof. And all those Kickstarter projects? If I was at WotC, I would be dropping $50k-$200k on the promising ones, just to see the D&D logo appear in their thanks announcements. You can’t get better advertising than that. The really good ones would get job offers in the creative department. The trick is to do it in a “hands off” manner. If WotC can get you making content, even content critical of them, and not try to force it to be flattering, they gain a good reputation with your audience. Getting that kind of reputation is better than short-term profits. They could fund your channel for a decade for a small percentage of what the profits are on a single project. That’s called “patronage”. It isn’t a new idea. Or they could try to loot goblin and watch their valuable IP burn their house down.

@@DUNGEONCRAFT1 I used to run a multimillion dollar cab company. Part of the reason for our success was because I would be the first to complain about the boss and I was him. All the guys knew that was a strategy to endear the drivers to the customers. If you’re making videos critical of WotC with a D&D sponsorship tag on your video, you’re driving up profits. The people watching who don’t know better will buy D&D products while cursing WotC. The ones who do know will see you as the champion they need to stick it to WotC and buy D&D products too. Kobold Press is one of the greatest resources WotC could ask for. It’s market research on the cheap. Dropping $50k on one of their Kickstarters to see if it sells is cheaper than hiring one guy to write something similar and then investing hundreds of thousands to publish. It directs them which way to go on their next big project. They could get the next Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk, Dragonlance or Dark Sun if they went about it the right way. They could look at how successful something you wrote was and say, “we can run off two million copies of that for you, if we can have a cut.” It’s no different than what they tried to do with the OGL mess, but it hits different. It’s them being helpful, not coercive. It’s still money on the bottom line. Like I said, that’s just what I would do. I made enough to retire before I turned fifty thinking that way, so it can work. Somebody at WotC just has to be thick-skinned enough to play the role of the asshole in public while treating everybody else like kings behind closed doors.

I appreciate that they're not trademarking the things they can't legally trademark. SO GENEROUS! What a great bunch of mercs. What is this, Mos Eisley Spaceport? (Yes, actually, it clearly is.) To me, it's like Chick-Fil-A. I don't know if you've been, but they run their business efficiently, with a consistent level of quality. And what's sad is that a company doing exactly what they should do makes them looks special compared to everyone else. I mean, I'm glad they're doing the right thing, now, but boy, I just can't bring myself to praise them for it. It should never be in question to begin with. (Naive, I know.) In this analogy, in this specific context, Hasbro is the diametric opposite of Chick-Fil-A. But they're both still over-priced, imo. (And I wish I had stock in at least one of them... you know who.)

I saw the ruthless: monopoly's history documentary recently and the whole taking it to court and battling it out just for the principle of it, is just what happened. It really isn't the smart move but not unreasonable. I looked up reviews, the game wasn't even very good, it probably had a bit of Streisand effect. In the long run, if they are great games, the ogl debacle will probably be good for the ttrpg space, hopefully giving room for another pathfinder or even its growth.

I think I still need assurances, such as amending the OGL only to state it is irrevocable. The 5.x SRDs in CC means little to nothing for the OSR. Games like Old School Essentials and Lamentations of the Flame Princess, Basic Fantasy and Labyrinth Lord, these depends on the OGL to unlock words and terms. It would be great if Hasbro put all editions into the CC, but that is still not enough. The OSR is a complex web that depends on the OGL to grow off of each other. Anything I publish under the OGL is open content for everyone. Your presumption that Hasbro will not mess with the OGL again is reasonable. But I cannot trust Hasbro and I need that one thing to rest assured. Make the OGL irrevocable.I dunno, maybe place *that* into the CC? Would that work?
