And from far away, the statue was originally intended to be put on the Duomo in Florence. Also, the strap on his shoulder is a sling, and in his other hand are some rocks. The statue was meant to be faced towards Rome, and was essentially a veiled threat.

the pose david is in is because of the rock they gave him to carve it. The rock was so narrow Michelangelo had to use as much as the rock's shape.
