Anthony, you have been such a help for me lately as I have been itching to step back into photography. For paid work.

Me being a blue collar worker who has been unemployed for a few months, I have skills from my trade and contacts that I can work independently under. I started looking at internships to puff my resume up. It all was worthless for 40hrs a week and having to work for money on the back end. Unpaid internships are a way to get grunt work for free. I've only seen 3 places provide actual knowledge after a few dozen places I've participated in. If you are doing actions for an "employer" you should get something out of it. Like you spend your life, your time to exist before you die. Unpaid internships are abhorrent and have no value because it is using uneducated people who will amount to grunts to join the try outs to start getting paid

Unpaid work isn't an internship it's volunteering.

Now interview the person who did take the position. I'm glad you were happy with your decision and still put in work, but there's a good chance the unpaid position is extremely helpful for others as well, perhaps especially for those who don't have the same self-motivation developed yet.
