Tucked away in one of Bangkok’s most upscale neighbourhoods, the tranquil Japandi-style Room Langsuan is a sleek and neutral space that accentuates the owner’s collection of designer artworks and furniture. Inspired by minimalist warehouse interiors, OPH Architects’s Pilin Hongwittayakorn used a simple combination of a crisp white palette and light blockboard, an engineered plywood, throughout. A custom joinery piece doubles as a TV cabinet and shoe storage at the entrance, while matte white laminate unifies the entrance, kitchen, and floor-to-ceiling storage cabinets. Blockboard walls and ceilings zone out the Japanese-inspired elevated sleeping platform in the bedroom, which leads into the monochromatic black bathroom offering a dramatic contrast to the rest of the apartment.

Interesting to see that the Japanese-inspired spaces (ie those outside of Japan) featured on NTS are, more often than not, of a clean and 'minimal' aesthetic, meanwhile the spaces in Japan look so lived in and their practice of minimalism is mainly for practicality. it's great to see all of these inadvertently placed alongside each other through NTS' features, so we can have the chance to appreciate them critically.

Homeowners have much less incentive to showcase their homes, full of their personal items. Perhaps if NTS can get architects they have worked with to reach out to their older clients...

The architect did a beautiful job of fulfilling the client's desire for a livable showplace. The spare design really sets off the furniture and other pieces. Pushing all the storage to the walls and hiding it really enhances the museum feeling, since it keeps your focus on the owner's furniture. I feel like the architect really succeeded in making the client's dreams a reality. Love how light and airy it is!

I love the space but the paintings not being hung really throws it off for me. There is so much negative space above them and it just feels unfinished. If they were all more height appropriate, like 7ft paintings, then I feel like them just resting on the floor would work better. Still hanging would be ideal in my opinion.

For lot of people, this is maybe lack of space, feels unfinish, but it's perfect in Asia where there isn't much space. The deco helps to create a sense of larger rooms. At the end, if it pleased your client then you nailed it 👍.

Paintings on the floor because you dont want to make holes in the wall; minimalist furniture because you don't own much and you bring home different kind of chairs found on the street; laundry machine (that you can't hide) and white kitchen in the entrance; mattress on the floor; and so on.... I know those kind of spaces because I live in one, but it feels unfinished because you don't neither have the money nor the time to make it better and cosier. When you consider the outdoor chaos and color of such a vibrant place, the need for this aesthetic is obvious. I do love the architectural ideas. They were calming and made sense and seemed well developed and executed. The separation of spaces was done subtly and with class. The materials were thoughtfully chosen and placed sensibly. I do not think I would have enjoyed a cave black bathroom, but I did appreciate the analogy from the progression of the bedroom 'cave'. I loved the height of the room. I did not feel a lack of storage because I could see that living with as little chaos as possible was the main theme. Some people do not want, enjoy, or even need tons of crap. I am a fan!! I was hard pressed to understand or enjoy the placement of the clients artwork and furnishings. Which is my problem of course, not the clients' or the architects'.

47 sqm is not "TINY", paired with this specific minimalistic design take, it feels even greater and rather spacious. With real "tiny living" design approach, this area could house a 3-5 members family. This channel became a hub for people glorifying and typifying small / tiny living approach to essentially spaces that aren't, in 80 % of the cases, small nor tiny. Yes, minimalism is a legit take on design and I guess people want to live in bland, copy-paste, depersonalized spaces; but lack of personal touches + some "genius" (yet unneeded and easily avoidable) engineering and design solutions don't make for a real small / tiny house. Try squeezing a whole home in 25 sqm (as you do, but very rarely, on this channel) - great job for such representation. But here, and in many other vidoes, where you have a bathroom or kitchen that is half the size of that REAL SNALL 25 sqm home, well, what it is is selling a lie, really.

The kitchen area has what you need in a very concentrated space, leaving the majority of the property to the living and dining area. I grew up in Bangkok. I think the rich material culture is precisely why younger generation is going for minimalism - or blandness as you called it. The extremely chaotic clashes of colors, texture, shapes, sound, ambience, etc. outside in the city are just too overwhelming to the senses, to the that point people just want to 'escape' to a more muted, monotonic living spaces.

An equivalent of £ 300K flat (unfurnished - not that much cheaper as new either) in the city where the minimum wage is roughly £400/month, not to mention it is situated on the 'technically' private-ish road - this kind of 'Condo' building is out of reach for the most middle-class family. Given how this flat is designed, The owner likely has a large landed property on the outskirts of Bangkok with multiple carparks - and probably a European car (300% import tax on those). Given the city's terrible traffic, it matches the Bangkok Elite's (the top 1%) lifestyle to have a room within a convenient area like this to bunk at on weekdays. I'm from a very closeby area, and sitting one hour to two in the traffic to get out of Central Bangkok is a norm when I have to go to see clients on the outer side - which, coincidentally, are the kind mentioned above - as they are the only people able to afford a service of a designer/architect.

Paintings just standing on the floor instead of being hung on the walls really enhances the feeling of an unfinished space. You can literally hear the uncomfortable echo when the person moves the chair, puts down their cup, or opens and closes furniture doors. 😬 I guess it's nice for someone looking for that kind of style, because the overall layout is great and there's so much light in the space with those large windows and balcony access. It's just this kind of unfinished look that's very unappealing to me. 🤷‍♀

There is so much space in the open living area to have a proper kitchen with a multi functional centre island. A kitchen with an oven/flat top range really needs an exhaust vent and that is easily incorporated moving the kitchen to a wall that is near the exterior windows. The present location of the kitchen (at the entry way) would be perfect for storage.

It feels they don't belong to the space as the space is not personal and struggles with personal items. It is just my opinion as I struggled in my first renovated apartment with same issue.

I agree whole heartedly with many of you commenting on the art on the floor; however I’m guilty of not hanging all my artwork due to indecision of placement - to eliminate that problem I’ve invested in an art gallery rail hanging system (not outrageously expensive) that eliminates a wall looking like it’s been shot at by a machine gun & provides great flexibility of placement.

I appreciate so much the light and how big the apartment appears to be and to be in the actual space gives a different feel to seeing it via video. But I don't feel the artwork is been seen to its fullness all you really see is the white and a very unfinished vibe. Yes, I know the owner is minimalist but the artwork is absorbed by the stark white.

What is nice for me here is the amount of space, the amount of natural light, and the bonus of a small balcony. The bathroom is probably my favourite room because at least it has some personality. The whole completely white, sparsely furnished, minimalist look is not for me. It feels too cold and not like someone actually lives there. I actually think that the artwork and few furniture pieces would “pop” much more against walls that are painted a darker colour. Not all the walls, but at least some of them to bring in some colour and to designate zones that way too. Not crazy bright colours, but some darker colours like maybe painting two of the living/dining room a dark navy (or even the colour of the sofa). There is enough light in the room to handle that and it would make it feel cosy while still making the artwork stand out. In fact, I would take the same colour down the other side on the wall of the future TV too. Then leave the cabinets, walls and window treatments on either side white. Just something for a bit of contrast and personality! Finally, what is the deal with the bed platforms? Is that a Eastern thing? Because I don’t get the purpose of it. To me it has no function and rather makes the bedroom look a lot smaller. Having a bed with legs so it’s off the floor would have made the room seem more airy and bigger too. It’s not me who lives here, though, so I’m sure the client is happy nonetheless 😊

Pics on the floor and propped on furniture add the look of clutter in this space. It doesn’t work otherwise it’s a great masculine space! Also adding rugs will cozy up the barren floor.

Beautiful, except for the wall art leaning against the wall on the floor. As an artist, this is an unacceptable way to display 2D art. Another sacrilege popular among designers is placing objects in front of art, partially obscuring the artistic composition from viewers.

i love the apartment, especially the bedroom space and the black bathroom, but can we please turn away from this ''dont hang your artwork on the wall'' trend?? it puts too much visual weight on the floor and it's just not very practical :///

Totally!!! How did not hanging things up ever become a thing in the first place!? It just looks silly - like you’re never done with the space and it looks so out of proportion with stuff on the floor with so much bare wall. A very big, oversized mirror with a heavy, thick and ornate frame is something I can accept just leaning against a wall, but not art!

Bauhaus/ Dieter Ram meets Japanese tatami style, simply amazing. Great way placing washing machine and kitchen facing entrance door to reduce visual clutter from living room and i learn something new. The bedroom always reminded me of walking dead episodes lol. IMO the ""museum space" is a niche concept. This is what designer nerd cave would look like lol. Can anyone tell me what kind of wood is used?
