NEVER TOO SMALL: Flexible Japanese Inspired Apartment, Thailand 33sqm/355sqft

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Visit www.nts-store.com/products/es... to get your hands on our Essential guide to your living room.
Inspired by the calm and peaceful atmosphere of traditional Japanese Ryokans, this central Bangkok apartment has been transformed into a flexible city escape by interior designer Mae Prachasilcha. The main living area seamlessly integrates a study corner, a convertible coffee table/dining table, and a custom-designed 3-seater modular sofa that can be cleverly separated with very strategically incorporated sliding Japanese shoji doors. Divided from the living area by these doors, a wooden box-like platform with four tatami mats serves as a second living room or a cosy tea room during the day and effortlessly transitions into a sleeping area at night. The area can be closed off by using the sliding panels, offering privacy and keeping the room cool at night. This multifunctional approach adds softness and functionality to the space while still allowing light to filter throughout the home.

One of the best designs I've seen, for such a small space, at just 33sqm!.. I loved the use of wood, which gave it a cosy, homely feel, rather than just painting eveything white... The coffee/dining table and TV/framed picture were lovely touches, along with the sliding doors and row of plants, for privacy... I'd love to live there... Mae is a great designer! 🦋

I love this so much. It's incredibly peaceful and minimalistic but not sterile. Also, the closed-off kitchen makes so much sense in a tiny space, you'd want to keep the food aromas from getting into the rest of the apartment. It feels absolutely flooded with light and air. I love how you can hear her smile when she talks about her brother's board games.

@@user-oi8ph6qx1l well if you take the context of Bangkok, very vibrant, sunny, warm, crowded, and loud city, personally it would feel like a nice comfy cocoon for me. If this place was somewhere with harsh winters for example, I’d probably find it depressing. But having personally been to BKK, it makes sense to want a space that dissociates from the outside.

I love that they have a large enough sofa for two people to lounge on, rather than some nonsense like stapling a lawn chair cushion to a plywood bench. This is a great use of space for *real* furniture!

Clever designer! The fact that her brother is the client is actually emotional, they seem to have a cool bond! When he moved the sliding door to enclose the sleeping area and that 3rd seat of the sofa remained with the bedroom it was illusive in a good way, a detail that grabbed my attention!

So there's a lot of elements in this design that I've independently thought of for my own apartment (shoji-inspired doors, textured walls, raised multi-purpose platform, natural materials). I was therefore very excited to see how beautifully it works in an apartment (i.e. not just in a ryokan) and am feeling a little more confident in my style preferences. Thank you for sharing this design!

Lovely, calm, well thought-out space. Can’t help feeling that there should be a way to make the bed/tea-room conversion easier - not necessarily a Murphy bed, but something that keeps the bed made up, rather than having to fold it up and pack away every pillow etc separately every day. Also, some might choose to swap the desk with the last piece of sofa, though I must admit I rather like the way the sliding door divides the sofa..
