I remember back when we would go to personal safety classes in the early 80s and we were told that we should just "comply" with everything that a rapist or abductor wanted for us to do. They said complying would "save your life". Even back then my Dad knew what was up. He told me that no matter what I was to never ever allow someone to take me to a new location if I was ever in that type of situation. He said that even if I had to drive my car into a building or another vehicle to do it and jump out and run for my life. Years later I went to a personal safety class with my daughter and they were starting to tell women the same thing that my Dad had always said. Dad, You did a great job of keeping me safe!

@Mrs. M, your father is a wonderful, smart man. I’m glad he taught you right. I had been raped and assaulted by an ex who broke into my house about ten years ago. He tried to pull a murder-suicide on us, but eventually I was able to escape once he was unconscious from overdosing on medication, and we were both taken to the hospital. He’s in prison now, pretty much for the rest of his life. A few years ago I was talking to my fiancé about that night. My fiancé was an army ranger sniper. I asked him what should I have done once my ex had broken in and then broke down my bedroom door. I didn’t have time to kick him where it counts or do anything at all- he immediately punched me in the face, spun me around multiple times to disorient me and once I fell down he picked me up and hurled me into the wall, the pounced on me punching my face etc. that was just the first couple minutes of many hours. My fiancé told me that (god forbid I’m in that scenario again) to drop to the ground and fight on the ground. He showed me some moves he learned in training. One was an arm bar, you get the attacker’s elbow on your hip, do a flex ion of your hip- and he said you have to be prepared to go all the way, it’s going to be horrific, but do it and run, once you’ve broken their elbow backwards, snap it and dig that broken bone into the ground and run. Most people aren’t good at fighting on the ground, and that way you can’t get knocked down. I don’t remember much else, and my fiancé has since passed away. But I will forever be grateful for all he taught me and I hope when it comes to that, I never have to be in a situation to use it. I haven’t taken any self defense classes, so I’m curious to know what they taught you. Did they tell you anything similar to what my fiancé taught me? Thank you for sharing and hope to hear back from you on this!

@@dalerimoller272 I'm so sorry that you endured such a horrific ordeal at the hands of your ex. He sounds like a monster. Glad to hear that he's in prison which, by the way, is a testament a testament to your strength and survival. I'm also so very sorry to hear about the loss of your fiance'. My husband passed away in May and it's a difficult journey for sure. To answer your question, back in the 80s they essentially taught us not to fight back because, at the time, they thought if you angered your attacker that they would be more likely to significantly harm you or kill you. Since then we've learned that attackers do not care if you cooperate or not, if they plan to harm you, they are going to do it whether you cooperate or not, so fight like hell from the very beginning if you are able to. I've never thought about dropping to the ground to make it more difficult for them to "fight" you. My husband was a law enforcement officer and he taught me, our daughter and grandchildren that, if you can get to the attacker's eyes, completely gouge their eyes out with your thumbs. I know that it sounds gross but the goal is to get yourself out of the situation alive. So, as a victim, you have to not care about whether or not you blind them, and if you gouge their eyes out, they aren't going to be worried about you anymore and you can get away. Just be prepared to not back down, you gouge until they are not going to come after you. Another tactic is to stomp with everything you've got on the curve where the top of the foot curves upward and meets your lower leg/ankle. It might break their foot but who cares. Something else that you want to look up is pressure points and control techniques. It's where you know where certain pressure points are you can push on them and they will definitely let go of you. You'll want to not practice these on anyone because you can actually damage a person's nerves using them. That's about as helpful as I am...... I hope that you have many, many wonderful days!!! ❤💔❤

What a scumbag. Unfortunately, I went through something similar, (I was drugged, beaten and sexually assaulted by possibly 10 different men at a party...it was like a horror movie). My attacker/attackers are still out there somewhere roaming free. It makes me sick. Luckily I don't remember much bc of the drugs I was slipped. It's awful and I still have nightmares about that night. Luckily I survived the beatings with pretty minor injuries (a broken nose, a shattered eardrum & 2 very black eyes). Anyway, I know we don't know each other, but if you ever want to talk, please reach out. I'm a good listener & am here for you. Us survivors have to stick together. I would also add that, even when confronted with a firearm, running is a perfectly reasonable defense. Bullets are tiny, space is big, and most criminals can't shoot worth a damn anyway - even if they are willing to do so. The more distance you put between you, the better your odds are, with each and every step. There is no shame whatsoever in simply running away!!

Supposedly parking lots are one of the places where a woman is most likely to be abducted so park close to the entrance, a camera, or a place with lots of pedestrian traffic if possible, and if someone does get in your car or harass you make sure to point out the CCTV camera - even if you have to invent a camera.

When I was a teenager, around 14 years old, my best friend and I went to our local mall (the smaller of two main malls where we lived) we went in and out of multiple stores completely aloof and just enjoying our time, but as we exited one particular store, a security guard approached us and told us that an older man had been following from us from nearly every store we had entered and exited. He asked if we knew him, if he was one of our parents or someone “watching out for us” we told the guard no, I can’t remember much else after that except being shocked and horrified that we hadn’t even noticed. I don’t know what happened to the man, but I remember security stayed with us until our parents picked us up. To this day, I am thankful for that guard and the security that watched the cameras, he likely saved our lives had he not said anything. That moment changed me forever though, my senses are heightened and it’s given me some anxiety issues. You can’t live life in a bubble though, and I remind myself that not everyone is out for bad reasons. That being said, I also never leave home without pepper spray and Witt’s 100% about me.

True Story: I was leaving University late at night around 9pm to go back to my apartment. It's a short, 10 minute uphill walk right beside the highway. It's a very dark road and up ahead I see this white van coming towards me. I noticed it didn't have any plates and it was slowing down and it swerved towards the edge of the road to where I was. The windows were tinted black. I immediately moved away from the road and I see the side door of the van suddenly swing open and two men wearing all black clothes preparing to grab me but the van was going too fast and they missed. I looked back and saw they were trying to make a uturn. I was carrying my bag and heavy school books making it impossible for me to run uphill with the weight and make it to my apartment (they were expensive medical books i never thought to drop them). When they turned and came up again, this time they grabbed me. I kicked, I clawed, I wiggled and fought with all my strength to get free even when half of my body was already in the van I fought for my life and managed to somehow get my legs to stand and free myself. And I ran downhill back towards the university entrance falling and getting up until I made it. Two weeks later a body of a girl, high-school student, was found in a ditch on the same road. Her front torso was sliced open from neck to navel and organs missing. Police said witnesses saw a white van, tinted windows and men wearing all black leave the area.

She started screaming as loud as she could. She knew people would be able to hear her screaming from inside their houses and would come outside to see what was going on. The guy knew this too and took off running. The police told her she did the right thing. The police said most perps won't actually shoot someone in a public place where they have a higher chance of getting caught and there are so many potential witnesses around. They expect their victims to comply so when a victim doesn't, they get scared and flee. I don't know what that guy's intentions for my friend were, but I have no doubt that her decision to scream instead of complying and staying quiet saved her life.

3:50 At this point I got reminded of a video I saw about a week ago. It was security footage of a man at a gas station filling up his car. While he was filling it, 3 criminals pulled up next to his car and were about to attack him and hijack the car. Not hesitating one second, the victim pulled the gas hose out of his car and aimed it at his attackers. One by one he sprayed them with gasoline, they couldn’t run away fast enough. In panicked state and soaked in gasoline the criminals jumped back into their car and drove away immediately. It was a genius move of the victim and possibly saved his life. Quick thinking. If anyone finds themselves in a position like that at a gas station, you now know what to do 😉 But really though, take advantage of ANYTHING in your environment like this man has done to save your life. This man was unarmed, yet still had a resource to use as weapon. Sometimes it might seem you don’t have any options, but you do if you create one.

I'm glad you posted this. I'm someone who ran from an armed man trying to kidnap me because in that split second I knew that if he got me in his car I would be a dead woman. I was walking to work when a man pulled up beside me and said "get in my car" I was nervous and laughed like "you gotta be kidding me" when he pulled out his gun from the passenger's seat and tried to stop, I just ran. I was very lucky he tried this during the day in a rather populated area. If he was bold enough to shoot me which he wouldn't have had a great aim because I always knew to run in undistinguished movements and no set pattern, I would have probably had a much easier way out than if he drove me somewhere secluded like he wanted to, or possibly have help in doing something else. I think this needs to be highlighted more, never go to a second location, gun, knife, nothing. They want you alive at that second location so the weapons are an intimidation tactic. I'm not saying all people are going to follow this to a T, nothing is really guaranteed but I'm sure most do.

I think every college or drinking age person no matter there country or gender needs to watch this video. I had an encounter where my friends actually prevented me from getting in a car with a complete stranger after a night of drinking. Prefacing this by saying I’m a guy in my early 20s and I had gone out drinking with some female friends for a birthday celebration. As the night went on I was in no state to make decisions. Throughout the night there was a very pretty women in her early 40s in this club who took a liking to me. So started talking, and I can’t remember a lot of what she said, but I know she kept on trying to convince me to go back to her flat. Me being a single guy, very drunk was just going along with it. So she asked me if I wanted a cigarette outside, didn’t wait for an answer and dragged me outside away from my friends. We got outside and straight away she took me down this back alley next to the club and straight away seemed off, looking around the road and at other people smoking. Again being drunk and happy I was potentially going to get laid was just enjoying the vibe. In the background I could here this women getting more and more aggressive on the phone asking for a lift back to her flat. At this point I had finished my cigarette and was attempting to go back inside to find my friends to let them know I was going with this women. As soon as tried to go back inside the club this woman absolutely freaked. Started saying things like god would look after me, she’d make sure I was “looked after.” Anything to get me to come with her. Luckily as soon as she started to get more forceful with me to try and get me in the car that was supposedly going to her flat, one of my friends had come out to look for me. She saw I was looking more and more uncomfortable being trapped in this back alley behind the club by this women now trying to drag me down the road. Till this day I keep on saying thank you to her, as probably wasn’t anything sinister at all but the level of discomfort was one of the most uncomfortable I’ve felt on a night out. So my friend started walking down down this alley pretending to be my girlfriend and started screaming at this women to fuck off and leave me alone. This women looked away from me and towards my friend, and according to my friend gave her the most evil look she had ever seen before skulking off further down the alley. My friend put her arm around me and started walking me back inside to our friend group. On the way back into the club she lectured me about how stupid it was going with a complete stranger especially agreeing to get in a car. Have to say it’s sad that all women have to worry about that even on a normal day. But in this case I’m extremely grateful that my friend had her doubts and second thoughts. TO ANYONE who goes out drinking. 1. tell your friends where your going even if you are still together always check you have people with you. 2. Always trust your gut, or your friends gut if you are in a position to not make functional decisions by yourself. 3. Don’t be afraid to speak up and say you have people waiting for you, after hearing many different stories of potential abduction if a potential kidnapper knows there’s people waiting or looking for you, the risk is greatly minimised. 4. This is mainly for guys as I know we will do anything to get our dicks wet. If you feel uncomfortable or being pushed into a situation where a girl is trying to separate you from your group just try and be aware of your surroundings or make sure atleast one friend sees you with that person. Be safe, aware and respectful when out drinking.

This is great advice. Once upon a time, I was out at a bar on New Years Eve with some friends, and was drugged. It was a guy I had met earlier in the evening. He came over and said "Here, I bought this drink for you!" I was wary, but he kept insisting, so I took a few sips, to which he replied "Oh come on, drink up!" and tipped the glass from its bottom. He really wanted me to drink the whole thing. After that, he asked if I wanted to smoke, to which I said OK, because I used to be a social smoker. Instead of going to the back patio smoking area, he started dragging me out to the front. I tried to protest, but I started to immediately feel dizzy and by the time he got me outside, I only remember bits and pieces, then nothing. The entire thing took less than 5 minutes. He was trying to get me to get into a cab with him, but his evil plan backfired when I somehow fell backwards, hitting my head on something (most likely the concrete sidewalk). Next thing I know, I'm in the hospital being given a lecture on not drinking too much. The thing is, I only had 2 vodka tonics up until the moment when the guy gave me the evil cocktail. I don't know what would have happened to me, but I'm 100% sure it wouldn't have been good, and I wouldn't have remembered a thing. Sorry for such a long comment, but please be wary everyone! There are sickos everywhere, so don't accept drinks from strangers, OR go to a second location with them, _especially_ if you are separated from your friends or people that can help. Lazy, I was like you - I watched a lot of true crime documentaries, and I saw a pattern: if the abductor wanted to take a person somewhere, that person would likely be tortured and then their body would be dumped. Another thing I've noticed, time after time in the true crime documentaries, is that when a girl is with their boyfriend, and a man pulls a gun on them and makes them to get on their knees, the gunman will then execute the boyfriend (because men are stronger than women, and a gunman can control a woman much easier). Never, ever comply. It is better to fight for your life than to willingly go to a slow death at the hands of a merciless monster.

Like cool story bro but you didn't give your victims any mercy so why do you deserve it just because you feel bad now? John Mulaney mentions not letting someone take you to a secondary location as part of one of his stand up routines. Apparently, they had a cop who did safety talks with the kids about not getting kidnapped, and that was one of his big Do Nots. And, being a stand up routine, there were jokes because he was a kid and the guy was intense and freaked the kids out, and you laugh. But these stories drive home just how right that cop was. It's an important lesson, a scary one, but very important for people to learn especially kids.

A guy tried to break into my house not to long ago at night. I came down in the dark to get some water and could see him through the window. He didn't see me coming when I opened the door and loudly said "wtf do you think you're doing?" it scared him and he took off. Maybe not the smartest thing but my fight or flight kicked in and I'm clearly a fighter 😅 I've now hidden knifes throughout my house, added a rope to safely be able to step outside the upstairs window and put a key on the inside of the bedroom door.

That’s great advice lazy! And it could have possibly saved a lot of peoples lives. I know it saved mine once. I was about 13-14 at the time (20 now) my family and I had gone out of town to a nearby carnival (idk if that’s what it’s called english is not my first language) we always preferred to go when it was chilly because naturally less people would be there because of the cold. I was separated from my family for just 10 minutes to go to the bathroom and the bathroom area was in a somewhat dark corner and if I remember correctly there was almost no one there. When I got out a man approached me and asked if I was lost and that he could help me find my family. I thought he was a worker or something but I declined because I already knew where my family was. He kept insisting though and obviously that seemed weird to me so I kept telling him no and started walking away and naively had my back turned to him which gave him the opportunity to grab me from behind and drag me (I think he either wanted to take me back to the bathroom or behind it who knows) it all happened so fast that I barely remember anything but I thank god for the adrenaline rush that gave me enough strength to fight him off and I bolted away from there as fast as I could without looking back. I found my family and told them everything and even though I could remember the mans features (although it was dark) we were never capable of tracking him down. God knows what he would’ve done to me if I hadn’t fought back. Moral of the story is FIGHT BACK. Scratch, bite, scream, do anything in your power and you could catch them off guard with that and run away. even if you end up dead in that moment it’s much better than whatever your attacker has in mind for you.

My parents always stressed to me and my sisters that should a stranger ever threateningly demand we get into his/her car, or try to pull us in, to make as much noise and fight back as much as possible. They told us, odds were, they would just give up and runaway because they don't want any attention drawn to them. I also figured, "I'd rather be shot and killed outright then and there instead of being taken somewhere else to be horrifically tortured and then killed."

I am both happy and saddened by the fact that in case 2 the police started looking for Kelsey so quickly. Because I think that it should be done that quick all the time, but I know a lot of police try to tell victim's families to wait a few days before filing a missing person's report. I know that they got on it right away for Kelsey because she was the daughter of someone on law enforcement and it's kinda unfair for all the other people that go missing/are killed that they aren't treated the same.

I used to live an hour from Overland Park. Two years after Kelsey's death her father came to my high school on behalf of the Kelsey Smith Foundation. He talked about how she was like and her goals for the future. Then told us how she was kidnapped in broad daylight in a public area and later how she was murdered. You could hear the grief in his voice while he talked. At times he was holding back tears. It was chilling listening to what happened to her. Afterwards he educated us on the importance of being aware of your surroundings even if you think you're somewhere safe. Him and a woman connected to law enforcement taught us some self defense and gave tips on what to do in a similar scenario to Kelsey's. He said he didn't want anyone to have to go through what his daughter did. Watching this video brought that memory to the forefront of my mind.

One of the reasons it's so important to go over these kinds of situations, to go ahead and make the decision, "I will never let them restrain me; I will never let them take me to a second location," is because deciding ahead of time actually _does_ help you know what your reaction will be. Usually, the people whose reactions aren't what they thought they would be are people who may have thought about the situation, but never decided, "I will do _x_ if this happens." Decide what you'll do now, so you're not trying to think it through under the stress of a life threatening situation.

#1 rule - never let them get you in a car. At that point police assume they're looking for a body, not a person. Even without a vehicle, once abducted and no trace for 24 hours? Your chances of survival are now pegged at less than 10%, so even if you are still alive most searchers assume you're not and may be searching for a body dump site not a place for a warm body.

When I was 17 years ago I was hitchhiking back home from a party cuz everyone was too drunk to drive home I met a guy who offered me a ride. When I got in he immediately offered me coke. I denied his offer but got an uneasy feeling in my tummy. I kept asking him to pull over and let me out. he kept making excuses. I put my hand on the handle ready to jump out. the feeling in my gut was getting worse. he finally started pulling onto a ramp in the woods. We were coming off the highway into the woods. I instantly remembered oprah whinfrys statement about not letting them take you to a second spot so I yelled at him to stop. he stopped. I thanked him for the ride and got out and started walking back towards the highway. All of a sudden I heard running behind me. I didn't get a chance to look behind as I was immediately attacked from behind and knocked down in the gravel. I was screaming so loud but it was the woods so no one heard me. He dragged me across the gravel down into the gutter with me kicking and screaming. He started raping me all while I was fighting back. At one point he held a gun up in the air but I kept kicking him. Suddenly there was a white car coming so I had this white bag in my hand and started waving it high above. the white car stopped behind this guys car. He jumped off me and ran into the woods. I jumped up and started running down towards the highway. I was half naked and bloody from the gravel. I ran to the highway and started flagging down cars. no one would stop. I was devastated. I knew I only had a few min before he would come after me. I ran to the opposite side of the highway and tried flagging down cars. no one would stop. finally I reached a decision to just jump in front of a car as I would want to die that way rather than him. I jumped right in front of this blue car. they stopped. I ran to the car to the back and jumped into the back and was frantically telling them to go go go or he would be after us. They drove me to the next stop which was McDonalds. I ran inside to call the police. Apparently there were multiple calls coming from people who reported me. Police came finally and they took me to the hospital for a rape kit. the guy was never caught.😢🤬. back then hitchhiking was the norm. Never ever again.

The second story reminds me of something I experienced in college. I was going out to my car and there was a young woman standing completely still in the middle of the parking lot like she was frozen in place. I asked if she was ok and I had this bad feeling in my gut. She said she had a feeling like someone was watching her. I escorted her to her car and made sure it started and watched her drive off while scanning around where she parked. I left still feeling uneasy. I saw her a few days later and she thanked me for seeing her to her car and she hadn’t felt that uneasy feeling since. I hadn’t felt it after that day either. Obviously we went out separate ways in life, but I hope she’s still doing alright. Hopefully my presence was enough to scare off whoever she thought was watching her. Hopefully it was no one and there was no danger but you never know in this world.
