    When to call a kan: 1. You've already declared a riichi. Call an ankan to reveal 2 dora indicators for yourself and only 1 for your opponents. And it is an additional draw. Smart opponents don't push their hands against a riichi hand with a kan, therefore it's easier to get a tsumo. Nota bene: rules forbid declaring an ankan after riichi if it changes the hand structure. For exmple, you have a waiting form 1112p, it's either an ankou 111p and waiting for pair for 2p, or a pair 11p and a penchan 12p waiting for 3p. If you draw another 1p, you have no right to call a kan, because it would destoy your penchan. 2. You are defending from another player and have run out of safe tiles. Declare an ankan to get a potentially safe tile. But don't call a shouminkan with a dangerous tile. 3. Less than 4 tiles remain in the wall. Declare any kind of kan to devoid someone of their last draw. Nota bene: It's forbidden to call a kan on the last tile from the wall. 4. You desperately need an expensive win (for example you are on the 4th place in the last round) disregarding all the risk. Call any ankan. If your hand is already open, call all kinds of kans. This will probably backfire, but if you have nothing to lose, you may get a lot of dora. 5. (Works only in live games) For some reason you know the rinshan tile or the next dora indicator and you are totally sure they will benefit you. When NOT to call a kan: 1. In any other situation. Sometimes you should even skip a kan in situations described above.

    There is something I've been trying to do and don't know how it actually works. Sometimes you get a potential Kan and you can keep it in your hand, then every turn you are proposed to Kan after drawing. Because of this I tend to wait until tenpai before calling closed Kan to maximise surprise, after a kan chance and not reveal additional dora in case I have to fold. Also when folding, external Quads/triplet tend to be safe tiles.

    I did not know that declaring a kan after drawing all 4 of the same time still makes your hand concealed and that you can still call riichi.

  • @JouzuJuls

    Yup! The important part of calling riichi is knowing whether you hand is open or closed. TAKING OTHER'S TILES is the only thing that makes you open, not making calls!

    I feel like it would be beneficial to call Kan if everyone has already opened their hand and you're in tenpai. You get an extra draw and a chance for rinshan after all.

    wait so after you call riichi you can still call a closed kan if you draw the 4th tile? Im so confused I thought calling riichi locks you out of doing anything to your hand.

  • @JouzuJuls

    @JouzuJuls

    You can call a closed kan as long as it as no effects on what tiles you are waiting for. For example if I have 222 567 789 999 1, then I am tenpai for the pair (1). If I get the 4th 2 in this situation, I can call Kan and nothing will change, so it's legal. However, if I had, 222 34 567 789 WW, then I am on tenpai for 2, 5, 8, and W. Calling a Kan here completely changes the waits (because you can no longer see it as "22 234 567 789 WW" or "222 345 67 789 WW").

    There's another way of calling the kan calls! For example: If the dora indecatior has a same tiles... That'll be worth 2 han! Another same tile is worth 3 han! And the 4th and final same tile is 4 han! And then... 5th and final dora indecatior call is a Suukaikan! is a ryyouku draw... Be sure to not call the kan too much!
