Never Ignore These Signs When It Comes To Asparagus Ferns (Asparagus densiflorus)
Hey Plant Lover, how you doing! Today we will be dealing with the most common problems we all have faced in the past if we have had raised Asparagus Ferns. I will talk about signs you should never ignore when it comes to these ornamental plants and then the corrective methods. So please sit tight and watch the whole video. Asparagus ferns are virtually indestructible (so much so that they’re tough to get rid of when planted in a garden), well, in a pot, the story changes dramatically. If your plant looks like this, then you got a couple of options, prune the asparagus fern to keep it healthy and cut any dead stems at the base.
Though asparagus ferns respond well to pruning, if in your case it doesn’t; then it’s time to move on to the next step- rearranging the soil mix, pruning the roots, and letting the plant know that it needs to restart its journey.
Dig out the plant’s root structure carefully, to avoid any major injuries to the roots
Add some new garden soil, the amount should be 1/10 of the pot’s volume, and the trick here is not to change the whole soil of the pot; the plant cannot be left in a new medium at such a critical time. So yes, 1/ 10th of the soil should be replaced with a new one right in the middle of the pot, not the top or bottom.
Cut off the dead stems, branches, and leaves. Also, prune all the roots at the end, just a few centimeters. Also mind you there is a chance that the plant will jumpstart from here or will go all dry and then with all the energy start from zero. So don’t be worried if the plant goes all brown and ultimately shows no signs of life, it’s doing just fine, you got to give it some more time.
Water immediately and thoroughly. Please keep the plant in a semi-shaded area for about a week and water every 3-4 days in the evenings.
It's been 5 days and the plant has gone all dry, no worries, things will look better soon
That’s 2 weeks after the process, and we have some new stems and branches. Now you can cut off the whole of the dried stems and branches, if earlier we had removed them the new stems would have had a hard time at the start of their life.
I have got some date palm saplings in the pot too, this would make sure the Asparagus fern stays hydrated right around the base, you too can have some plants at the periphery of the pot, preferably the ones with deeper roots and bigger leaves
A few additional points for your reference-
If you have pets, beware: asparagus fern is extremely toxic to dogs and cats
The sunnier the spot, the faster asparagus fern will grow. Yellow leaves indicate not enough sunlight, while brown leaves indicate too much and if the discoloration persists, now you know what you got to do

have had my plants for years. i put outside in spring through fall then in-house for winter. by the time spring comes, they completely regenerate just like you said. amazed they live as long as they do, but every winter they turn yellow and drop so many needles in house no matter what i do. still looking for the sweet spot. thank you!😀

😁Oh, that's sad to hear! Yes, I wish that too😅 But hope you have got a new fern up and running currently! Or you gave up on the plant altogether. Asking, because it happens to everyone, pretty hard to raise a plant again after you lose it and like that.

My asparagus fern drying after I repotted it. I took out from the soul and saw that there is no root rot neither there is over watering. The soil was moist. I again potted the plant in the same soil. The soil mixture was coco peat, sand and vermi compost. i also added little bit of saaf fungicide. So, should I wait for the plant to revive itself or my plant needs some treatment? Please help. I am helpless about my plant.

Plz help me, I had a healthy overgrown asparagus fern in a small plastic pot, a week ago I decided to move it into a bigger clay pot, adding Nutri Compost, Cocopeat etc but now it is turning all yellow. It is kept at the same old place where there's plenty of indirect sunlight. What shall I do now 🤔 I'm so upset.

Sure, I am here to help! Let us see what's going on with your Asparagus Fern. I believe you just took it out and put it in a bigger pot, did nothing like root pruning or branch pruning or bifurcating et cetera! And given you gave it the same spot with indirect sunlight. Considering that you confirm all this, I have my decision that the problem is either overwatering or the soil mix. Now what can you do, NOTHING except you extend the watering schedule to a point that you water once the topsoil feels dry. I wouldn't suggest altering anything else, given the plant is already under stress, and changing anything would just make it worse. So fix the watering and then wait for it to spring back up with greener foliage and more shoots. Hopefully, things will turn out great for the plant If there is anything else, please let me know and we can have another discussion.

I brought my asparagus recently . I had to time to repot them so i left them in a plastic container... Later after a week or so i was about to repot them finally i noticed due to the lack of drainage whole bottom of the soil is rotting.... I changed the entire bottom but did not change the soil near the plant.... Its been 2 days after repotting, my plant's leaves are falling and few stems have totally turned brown......

The timeline you shared says a lot about you, that you know all about plants and do right by them, impressive. Kudos 🙌😊 If it's any consolation, even if you had repotted the fern the day you got it, there is a chance that you would have been at this stage, why? the plant is quite sensitive (leaves and branches hardly have any water to withstand a considerable change in environment), and no surprises, every repotting makes it shed all the leaves and then grows back from the base up. I would suggest that you don't try anything else, just water normally, keep the fern in a shaded spot, and don't add any fertilizer until the plant is fully recovered. There is nothing much you can do to help this plant, what's done is done, however, I am sure it would come back, soon and stronger! Yellow leaves in Asparagus fern can be because of many reasons- Overwatering, Insufficient lighting, Fertilizer, Pests, Excessive light, Underwatering or Acclimation!! So in your case, as you just repotted it, I would like to believe that's because of Acclimation, the plant is trying to get used to the new environment, give it some days and it should come back all fine, given rest of the things stated above are in place. And the fact that you are all the way from Barbados, makes it more special 😀 Absolutely, you got that somewhat right, the morning sun would be perfect, or evening as well, just avoid the afternoon sun, which can get really hot. Now, you have nothing to worry about if temperatures stay below 30 degrees Celsius, above that the fern might not take it too well. I hope the textured wall is not the "popcorn" type that may contain asbestos - please be careful!
I have an asparagus that is very preety and i assume quite young. its been doing well considering that i would forget to water it or pay attention to it at all. Is there any tips on making it more full or less bald looking in the pot?

I am sure; they look pretty, even the young plants are charming 😊👍 Sure I will share a few tips on how to make an Asparagus Fern grow fuller- a) They would prefer a rectangular pot instead of a round or a deep pot; given it grows from tubers, so if you have more of those, more stems you will have on it b) Semi-shaded area is the way to go. A coup,e of hours of sun and then shade, would work just great c) Fertilize in moderation, they prefer organic fertilizer, inorganic might kill them instantly d) Repot once every 2 years, not just change the soil but also trim and prune the roots to about half the height of the fern e) Never prune or trim the stems, only remove or cut off the dead or brown or dry stems every once in a while I am sure once you have all these things in place, the said Asparagus Fern will outgrow itself in no time. Well, fertilizer for Asparagus fern, is no doubt a tricky topic and it needs to be looked at in the simplest of manners. Plain and simple organic fertilizer is your answer- compost, vermicompost, dung-cakes, mustard cakes, and the likes. The application should be done once every 6 months, and for best results, water the plant once every 7 days and provide it with just 3-4 hours of sun. वाह, यह तो कमाल है। आप भाग्यशाली हैं और इस शतावरी फर्न की वास्तव में अच्छी तरह से देखभाल कर रहे हैं। पौधा पहले तनों को बाहर फेंक देगा और एक बार जब वे एक इष्टतम ऊंचाई प्राप्त कर लेंगे तो पत्तियां बाहर आ जाएंगी। मैं यहाँ बहुत ज्यादा चिंता नहीं करूँगा, पौधा बहुत अच्छा और आक्रामक रूप से बढ़ रहा है। आपको अपने प्रयासों पर गर्व होना चाहिए।
