NEVER FORGET PATIENT ASSESSMENT

Patient Assessment skills is one EMT skill that every EMS provider must master throughout EMT class. Not only will NREMT test your patient assessment skills both in practicals and the cognitive exam, but so will your EMT school.
Furthermore for incoming paramedic students, patient assessment skills are often weak as well as recognizing signs and symptoms in the field and exam. This patient assessment video strengthen up your physical exam skills and signs and symptoms for NREMT and out in the field as an EMT/Paramedic.
I've complied the most pressing signs and symptoms that you will see so you can be prepared for them. I look forward to your success.
Be Great,
Evan, The Paramedic Coach®

I do my scenario evals next week. The preceptor stresses: Airway, Breathing, Circulation (with skin color, temp, moisture) and hemorrhaging IN THAT ORDER. If there is a breathing problem, fix it before moving on to Circulation. Then D for decision, stable or not; then E for expose to do a lung check. You may expose at the Breathing element to do a lung check. After the team lead completes the A-B-Cs, the crew can get vitals while you ask the patient SAMPLE, OPQRST, etc. Trauma is a little different, but still must confirm the patient has a patent airway, is breathing and not bleeding out. Then do a rapid head-to-toe. If trauma is declared, the 10-minute clock starts, and you'll do DCAP BTLS in the van.

You are amazing. I just finished my EMT course I wish I would have ran across your videos while I was in school. However, I'm getting ready to take the nremt and I am so glad that I came across your videos. I will also be continuing into the paramedic course and you will definitely be my best friend. Thank you so much for what you're doing.

For stroke in my agency we do not take a BGL ITS not in our protocol

Can you explain the importance of getting a BGL for a Stroke?

  • @TheParamedicCoach

Hypoglycemia and altered mental status events can mimic a stroke. Which is why you want to check a blood glucose level prior to calling a stroke alert.

Any advice for memorizing all medical emergencies & drugs for Paramedic level? I’m struggling with all of the material. I’m in my last semester of paramedic school and want to be very sharp with recall before my capstone.

I came across an ambulance service offering a 7 week program to become an EMT, while paying you during class provided you pass the class, & a 2 year commitment to work for them. Is this too small a time frame to properly learn what I would need to know? I'm assuming it's because of a shortage of EMS workers that they are offering this program. I only have a couple weeks to decide if I want to go ahead with this. I have no background in an EMS related field.

7 weeks is doable is you make it a full-time effort for most people. I would be more worried about the 2 year commitment. It gives them too much power over your schedule. Shop around and see if there are any affordable options in your area. You can get EMT in one semester for $1500ish at most community colleges. $2-3k if private. Definitely worth not being tied to a contract.

Hey Evan I was wondering if your course covers most chapters if not then all 41 of the EMT course. I’m currently doing a online emt class from RC Health and I’m honestly not learning anything from reading an e-book all day long. 🥲
