Awesome inspirational video. Thanks for sharing the story. Now your in a spot to take on even more adventure. Maybe a boat restoration reality show? You've got the skill to buy them low, reburbish them and flip them. Don't forget the tax advantages you'd have on your gains, everything you do is an expense. I thought about the boats for a while. The majority of the surface area is upholstery. Planes? there's a lot of "rules" and liability with planes as I understand it. And I just realized that you're probably close enough to effect the high end cruiser boats from the gulf. Again, thanks for sharing so much good information with us.

I appreciated your "career confessional" and can empathize with your trials and tribulations over the decades as I've been through many positive and negative experiences myself. I find myself starting a new business when other's my age are starting to retire, but frankly I would rather be active in my own business than working for someone else and counting my days till I can do what I want, I'm already doing that. My father was forced to retire and it didn't sit well with him, I have no plans on following down that path, and frankly cannot as I've been self employed most of my life and have also been divorced and lost everything a few times over the decades. Going through the loss is never fun, but after a while starting up again is. Live is a process of continual learning and that's something I have never tired of. Regards, MJM

Thanks for sharing your Life experiences. I am a little older than you and have interests in anything automotive related. I enjoy working my hands and mind with new experiences. Seems like the upholstery business goes through cycles as the economy waxes and wanes. Upholstery is very similar to cobbling and leather repair. If one could set up a shop doing upholstery, cobbling and leather repair, the cycles may even out and not be too abrupt. Maybe a partnership with a spouse or family member. It is also amazes me that no one has come out with patterns for different vehicles to sell to the general public. With digitizers, some able bodied person could digitize the patterns of popular vehicles and offer different versions of each vehicle seat pattern - simple, moderate and high end version. Having clothing patterns caused an increase in sewing machine sales and the cloth and accessories market.

Rudy you touched my heart on that subject you are absolutely right .I was an apprentice mason by day ,apprentice car upholsterer by afternoon and a tire changer by weekend to feed my family.... 18 years old...same routine ..success...divorce. The key is to build your skill sets, acquire and keep your tools even in divorce. People scoff at the idea that a person is a tradesperson. I say go one step further, I am seventy now over my lifetime I have learned other trade skills ,these days I buy restore and sell houses using all the skills I have learned. I said to my doctor you look like shit do you ever rest,,, he said no ... I can't afford to quit.... He said other than the prostrate cancer you look good ...I said I work 4 hours and go to the beach ....we are all going to end up with the same destiny.... you get to choose the path....never sell your tools...give them to your apprentice Rudy...God bless you and your family

Thanks for sharing that with us. Sounds a little like me also. Married three times and this time is a keeper. The other two were a nightmare. Starting over is tough. At least I stayed a contractor for most of the time. Retired now and loving it. Hey, I need my 98 Tahoe front seat repaired. I know you live too far away, I'm in Missouri, but who makes seat covers that are good? Ebay has some for different prices. I know the shops around here want $300 for the seat. Too much for me. See you in the next video.

I've been wanting a career change. Something creative, hands on and will let me work alone. I've been interested in upholstery but can't find too much info on it. Will upholstery allow me to pay the bills and have stability? I'd want to do car, motorcycle and/or aircraft upholstery. I just don't want to invest time and money into industry that may be dying or not as popular.

Hello The, It is what you make it. If you want to make a ton of money, you seek those customers. Never do work for poor people or dealers. Work your way to high end projects and people will throw money at you. Get well known in those circles and the sky is the limit. Now, with little or no effort, you will suffer a terrible failure. Tell me, which do you want? Now go get it. Please keep liking and watching!

Hello Nony, No website for pricing upholstery. Really you can charge whatever you want. If a good income is not important to you and your family, you can have a reputation for being the cheap guy. If you want financial security for you and your family, you can charge much more than you think you should. Have the reputation for not being the cheap guy. If a customer agrees with your outrageously high price, Score! Just sayin'. Please keep liking and watching!
