We have field vehicles in the Air Force, like the M-49. Nothing electric, except the headlights, turn signals, & brake lights.. Everything was mechanical. Dashboard, gauges, doors, windows, steering, braking, even the windshield wipers were air operated & hand operated. It never broke down, even though we treat it like crap.

I'm surprised you weren't looking underneath around the rocker panel, and the frame for signs of damage. I'd also take the vehicle to another completely unaffiliated body shop for a thorough inspection. Yes a mechanic should look the vehicle over, but you also want a body specialist taking measurements underneath, and looking for any signs of missed body and frame damage.

  • @davidvogel6359

Sorry Scotty. This is my area of expertise. DO take pictures. Locate the vehicles in the shots, try to get point of impact. Do not worry about the damage pics, that comes later. At fault or not you benefit. Debris field location is important. If the northbound vehicle was fully in lane the debris field will be in that northbound lane.

Car insurance regulations are state by state. Also, did he say whether it was the guy’s own insurance or the other party’s? Your own insurance doesn’t have to provide a rental unless you paid for that coverage (usually limited per diem cost & # of days). Other party’s insurance doesn’t either in certain states, but their liability coverage may ultimately be on the hook to reimburse if they were at fault

Diesels should be straight sixes. I hope they make a comeback. No race cars just practical transport for humans at a reasonable price. That's really how simple the marketing strategy should be. Not necessarily, we all seem to forget one very valuable piece of commonsense. The technician working on the truck is, surprise, surprise. Another person. People are people, did it ever occur to you that with the amount of work this truck needed. Maybe he just forgot to reset some codes, they're people, not robots and computers. Things accidentally get overlooked and people forget. Not necessarily intentional malice on the person working on it. I got my car back from the shop after an accident. The paint looked like garbage when I got it back. The body shop tech told me "Oh Jesus, I forgot to polish and wax it. I'm sorry. Would you mind coming back to take it tomorrow?" Doesn't mean he was trying to scam me, it just means he's a human, not a machine.

I’m sure they exist but I haven’t met anyone who wants to “waste” time checking a car over and I’m not talking for free . Trust and professionalism are the key factors . Is the mileage really better with desiel with the price per gallon being higher? Is there any fuel savings at all?

  • @alli3219

Diesel has more "calories" per gallon / litre, so it will nominally consume less, even if the price for that fuel is slightly higher

Unless it's a serious accident where anyone was injured, the cops aren't showing up. You're going to a reporting centre.

Even if you have even a relatively minor bump adrelanine kicks in and may mask an injury that can be more serious than you think at the time. Happened to me and had months of pain and lost a lot of money as a result of not calling ambulance

At first I thought the "after accident advice" was going to be NEVER APOLOGIZE OR ADMIT FAULT. Even if the accident is PARTLY your fault, you never know what OTHER factors may have contributed to the accident. The other vehicle may have an impaired driver. They may have been speeding. Their vehicle, due to improper maintenance, may have heavily worn brakes or tires that affected their ability to physically slow down or stop the vehicle to avoid the accident. They may have been distracted using their cell phone when the accident occurred, etc..

Thanks for reminding me that there's work to do after the mechanic gives me back my truck after they get done fixing it... yeah, '99 Chevy Suburban LT 1500. I have no option to check it before they sign the check(insurance company is in control, not me) so this oughta be just a barrel of monkeys type fun... Thanks again for the refresher, Mr. Kilmer.

How do you find an honest, descent mechanic???? Every time I want something done, they want to do something else, or a bunch of testing. They act sketchy, and act like they don't want me around. Not everyone has an additional vehicle or friend to drive them around while their vehicle is getting worked on. It's frustrating af!
