I had the Series 1 in Aluminium then changed to the Series 5 in Stainless Steel and won’t go back to Aluminium. My reasons: 1) it looks SO much nicer on my wrist 2) I had so many scratches on the Series 1 screen and I’m not a fan of screen protectors on watches 3) I also had a lot of dents in the Aluminium body. I do have scratches on the Stainless Steel, but polished it’s really hard to see them. Unfortunately a dent in the Aluminium won’t get polished out. So for me it’s the Stainless Steel, though I would now probably rather try and get a deal for it, 730 bucks is really a crazy price I probably won’t pay a second time.

You raise some good points, but those are what convinced me to go with SS. I used the aluminum for almost a month and was going to return it without replacing it. As much I love the functions, as with the Fitbit and Galaxy watch I tried in the past, I always came back to finding I was unwilling to replace my premium watch with a light plastic-y gadget. I found reviews of the SS that made me willing to try it. I love the finish, the weight, and even the sapphire has a much more premium feel than the Ion-X glass. Adding a plum color leather link band with the watch’s gold finish gives it almost a retro look - like some of the bulky rectangular watches Bulova came up with in the late ‘60s. It really gives me the feel of wearing a bonafide premium watch. I’m very happy with it after about a month of daily use.

I’m in construction and there is no way I can do an aluminum watch and survive without looking destroyed within a year. Stainless steel won’t dent and any minimal scratches can be polished out back to its original new shine very easily, and aluminum can not. It’s worth the extra money in my case.

1-sapphire is far superior to screen protector 2-stainless scratches can be polished out, no so with aluminum 3-people often associate weight or heft as quality and the difference is less than metal vs silicone band anyway.

The point remains: Brushed aluminum is more scratch resistant than polished stainless steel. That was my point. A buyer will acquire more scratches quicker because it’s polished and they’ll have to take it to a place and spend money to polish it. Or spend money to polish it themselves. The point was, as a consumer you should know that the more expensive one is going to gather more visible scratches and nicks on it.

Sorry to bust your bubbles... But if you think because sapphire is on Rolex's it means it's justified to blow more money on the Apple watch that has it. There are sub-$100 watches out there right now with sapphire glass. Including a few Casios, but a lot of Chinese brand mechanicals. Hell there are multiple Citizen solar quartz, radio controlled, titanium models you can get for $200-$300 that have sapphire also. Sapphire is no big deal the crystals are ever so slightly more expensive than mineral glass, which is me saying that can be bought in bulk for less than $5 per crystal.

Good video from a cost-effectiveness standpoint. I currently have an Apple Watch SE without a screen protector and I have owned it for about 2 years. It did get a bit scratched. However, I certainly feel like the Apple Watch Stainless Steel with the sapphire crystal feels quite a step from a quality standpoint above when you look at it. As someone mention, the screen looks like a jewel. Paired with an Hermès band, Milanese loop or a good vegan leather band, it looks like a phenomenal timepiece. As for the stainless steel micro-scratches, those can be easily polished out once a year. I recently purchased a S7 SS 45mm refurbished as an upgrade from my SE and I certainly notice the stark difference, while being cost-conscious.

  • @wa11pon33

I used to get the Aluminum watches but I won’t go back. My glass scratched up so bad (but I do take your screen protector point), the aluminum itself scuffed a bit over time, I think the stainless steel looks a lot better and classier than aluminum, the weight increase is negligible to me like they’re both so light I don’t really feel the difference, and with the series 7 I don’t think the aluminum colors are great because there isn’t really a neutral option for color. The price is a bit crazy for a stainless but if you’re savvy and don’t buy it from Apple you won’t pay near that price. Every stainless I’ve ever gotten was used or refurbished. I have a S7 45mm stainless that was mint condition refurbished and eligible for Apple Care + that I picked up a few weeks back for $479. That’s barely any more money than the aluminum. I wouldn’t ever pay the $749 starting a stainless comes in at but if it’s almost the same price as the aluminum to me it’s a no brainer to get the better material

I have both aluminum and silver ss Series 7 and the screen on the ss looks better to my “more mature” eyes. I personally like the weight of the ss version as well and I also enjoy looking at it as opposed to the aluminum. However, for workouts I reach for the aluminum because I don’t want to scratch my ss. A simple bumper could solve that issue and a quick rub with Mother’s Mag & Aluminum Polish will take scratches right out. I was a fool and didn’t get my screen protector on my aluminum before putting a nice scratch across it, nothing terrible but I see it when the light hits it just right. Unfortunately I did the same with my 13PM, live and learn.

Ok so I like you have bought the s3 and S4 stainless steel. Both A grade secondhand at around £350-400 (compared to £700 new). Apart from minor nicks on the stainless steal that buff out with metal cleaner the watch still looks new. As you say the main reason for Stainless steal is the glass and to be honest I NEVER have to worry about my watch. Friends I know don’t listen and offer buy the SE or even the S7/S8 but then have to stick a screen protector on and try to curve it over the glass which never feels the same or fits perfect with dust. Glass protectors are crap and flick off. Personally I am looking now at a series 6 SS for around £300 preowned as it should be mint. It’s a personal choice. Yes I have looked at s8 for same price but I would worry too much about the glass. It would have to be a superb glass protector that I haven’t seen yet to make me change my mind. If you have a link in Uk for these then please share. Cheers. 👍

I only had 2 apple watches, the 42mm series 4 with an elastic band and the 45mm series 7 stainless steel with milanese loop. My old watch was scratched to hell. Well not big scratches, but you know, tones of micro-scratches. On the screen, on the body, everywhere. I had the series 7 for 1 year now, not a scratch on it. It looks brand new. I think it's due to the sapphire screen, but also the body is made out of a material that also doesn't scratch. Looks shiny and new. On the other hand, it was the most expensive model they had last year. So that might be an indicator too.

I'm currently using the aluminum series 7, and the screen is so susceptible to damage that simply brushing against my wall put a huge scratch mark on the corner. Alongside that, the aluminum, in my opinion, just looks cheap. I much prefer the glossy finish that the stainless steel provides opposed to a plastic look that the aluminum provides. Weight never mattered that much to me because I know after a week of wearing it I won't even notice it's weight. The ONLY downside I see to the stainless steel is it's price and fingerprint marks, but that's a price I'm willing to pay. (No pun intended.)

There are obviously different type of watch users out there. I personally and I know a lot of people who like a heavy watch and they want to be aware of carrying one. In the watch world (not only smartwatch) a watch can also be a statement which reflects the look you like, like a tattoo! This includes a nice band. So either if you like it to fade away and be barely noticeable and be great for sports, or you want this as an accessoir which is shiny, heavy and has a band which is not water resistant like most regular watches, you're good. It depends on what you like. But when you say that there is absolutely no reason to get a steel one, sorry but this is just wrong. But it is totally fine when there is no reason for you personally to get one.

Thanks for the comment. I agree with the jewelry/shiny use case which I mentioned in my “Part II” follow up video to this. If somebody wants to buy Stainless Steel simply to wear as jewelry, I can’t argue with that. Because it IS in fact shinier/more reflective. For everyone else, who uses it as it’s intended purpose: a health tracking, smart wearable watch, stainless steel is pointless. I also disagree with you about weight. You said some people “like heavy”….? I don’t think this is true. If you showed somebody the same exact thing but ones lighter, people are choosing the lighter one, ESPECIALLY if they are WEARING IT, …..just my two cents. But we can agree to disagree on that.

Well, I am on my second Apple Watch, the aluminium version. I have just bought, 3 days ago, AW Series 9 and before it I had AW Series 6 - both aluminium. I had the AW 6 for 3 years and I wore it almost every day. Except some minor fine scratches (that can be seen only in strong light) it has NO scratches - when you look at it in the normal light looks brand new. I admit I took care of it and I am working in an office - herefore, not in risky conditions. On the other hand, even if I have the Series 9 only for 3 days, I already scratch it (a fine scratch) when I just touched it on the go (not hit it) to the closet door -made from wood... With other words, it scratched very very easily, compared do the AW S6... What I noticed as a comparison between the two models is that AW S9 has much more prominent edges of the display. This is the spot where I scratched it. Even if it is a minor scratch which can be see only from some angles and in strong light...I am still ”shocked” of how easily it got scratched... From my point of view, the price difference between Stainless and Aluminium does not worth it - these are almost „single-use” devices - you will replace it in 2-3 years. In any case, I really think Apple should use for the base model a better glass. But still...this is a watch - something you wear it every day - it is absolutely normal to have scratches, more or less, depends of how you take care of it.

The crucial message I get from your video is that each Apple Watch type serves different preferences. You prefer the aluminum version for its lighter weight, sporty look, and budget-friendly qualities. By contrast, I prefer the stainless steel version for its heavier weight, elegance, and resemblance of a traditional timepiece. Further, the Ultra version serves those who want maximum utility, durability, and battery life. Ultimately, there’s no universally 'best' Apple Watch; there's only the best one for you.

Not everyone can afford a series 7,8,9 etc. Some of us in different parts of the world earn a basic wage or we have more important commitments/priorities. There’s nothing wrong with the Apple Watch SE with ION-X glass if you’re looking for a basic function Apple Watch and you are not a rough user. If scratches still concern you, get a branded tempered glass or full cover film. I work in an office and I’ve been using my SE for a year plus, don’t see any scratches on the body or the glass itself.

Yes technology ideally has got to be about convenience but it’s also nice to have something that doesn’t feel or seem cheap. Why doesn’t everyone just wear crocs ? Why do people even bother with leather shoes? Why don’t Jordan just make all their shoes out of synthetic material ? It’s just a flawed argument.

I’ve had a stainless steel one for almost 2 years and there’s not a single scratch on it. I’ve slapped this thing on metal shelves face first hundreds of times, and still doesn’t have a single nick or scratch on it. I got the stainless steel mainly because of the color lol. I HATED all of the aluminum colors, so it wouldn’t be worth wasting my money on a color I’d never wear. I wanted the gold to match my jewelry, and the aluminum gold was pink, which I can’t stand. The stainless steel one has held up much better than my sister’s aluminum SE, and I’ve had mine for a lot longer. I know people think it may be ridiculous to spend hundreds more just for the color, but I hate pink, so the real gold color was well worth it. Silver and space grey match with nothing I wear, so then again, the aluminum would’ve been a complete waste of money for me.

The link band doesn’t look the same way on a aluminium housing. As doesn’t many other exclusive bands. The SS Apple Watch ⌚️ doesn’t need a screen protector so it’s anyway slimmer. Way more bands looks way greater on a SS Apple Watch. It’s ways more durable even nicks and scratches are easy polishable. Which you can’t do on the aluminium Apple Watch. With the SS Apple Watch you still have a good resell value after a year. Only thing is ; yes same components inside so you’re cheaper off. And do so if you like and that fits your budget. And not to forget, it depends on the person. It’s still a personal preference. 😂. Another example ‘A SS Apple Watch is easy to gild in to a golden watch. Which the aluminium one’s can’t. So all and all it’s still a personal preference. 😊 Save money = aluminium. Have the budget and want a nicer more durable Watch = SS. ( which looks more like jewellery ) it stands out compared to the aluminium edition. And fore some it’s an status symbol so less cliché. After all SS looks more like jewellery and a watch. While the aluminium Watch looks more like an nice piece of tech. The amount isn’t that big between the 2 after all. In the end a REAL Watch is a mechanical Watch. If you’re trying to buy the latest tech each year ,the most logical way to go is an aluminium Apple Watch. Unless you have the budget. That is a strong reason. Some prefer ceramic , some titanium, some gold some stainless steel. So after all it’s a personal preference. I rather have my Apple Watch without air bubbles 🫧 😉. Thanks for the informative vid. Keep up the good work 😄. 👍

No you are not stupid to go for stainless steel coz it’s shinier. Tbh I was considering buying stainless gold variant just coz it looks dope it has no comparison. Had Apple launched gold colour this year I wouldn’t even bother to think about stainless steel. The thing I considered while making the purchase is the weight I was planning to wear it 24/7 and I would not like something heavy, my aluminium watch with solo loop is so light on the hand that I have stopped wearing silicon band. Secondly the price oh dear it’s too much for a watch. Although I have a different opinion on cellular, in my opinion leaving the phone at home and going for a jog is freedom. And also once I forgot my phone to the gym and had to make a call urgently and I dint have the Apple Watch then and I realised there could be a possibility that I’ll forget my phone in a jiffy but not a watch coz it’ll be sitting on my wrist all the time.

Correction, aluminum is softer than stainless steel & therefore not as durable. Yes, stainless steel can scratch but the same can be said for aluminum which can get dents & damage a lot easier PLUS stainless steel can be polished. Damage aluminum & nothing can be done to fix it. Stainless steel is also more expensive to manufacture hence the price & to your 1st point on weight, the user does not necessarily 'want' the technology to 'fade' into the background. Sure, this might be your preference but it's not accurate to speak for all watch users. The idea for watch & jewelry in general is users like to 'feel' the item, more weight is in most cases accompanied by better craftmanship/quality. It's reassuring for the user that they have a high-quality product. Personally, I feel "naked" if I don't have my watch on my wrist. If I decided to wear a watch that 'faded' into the background, I think that would defeat the purpose of a wearable. Perhaps if I were running/exercising then a lighter aluminum model would make sense but outside of that, not so much.
