My brother moved to the east coast of Florida on Aug 1, 2004, to start a new job. He and the SIL bought a nice house close to the beach in Hobe Sound. I asked if that was wise. What about hurricanes?. He said the locals assured him hurricanes never hit that area. Something about the configuration of the shoreline, they said. Within the next six weeks they got direct hits with hurricanes Frances and Jeanne. They were without power for about a month. After they got things cleaned up and repaired, they put the house on the market and my brother took a job in Monticello, Minnesota. The guys where he worked said he was nuts. Why Minnesota? "I told them I can always shovel snow. But I can't shovel wind", he told me.

Riding out a hurricane is exhausting. I live right on the coast so stayed with some friends 40km away in their brand new house, thinking it would be safer. The Cat 5 (we call them cyclones in Australia) hit my town - Yeppoon - dead on & my friends ended up with more damage to their house from trees than I received. We were glued to the windows until the Eye hit then went out to check on things & when we came back in as the reverse winds hit, all of us were so exhausted we went to sleep & snoozed through the rest of it. I’m glad I took my dog & I to our friend’s though, as even though my house was ok, it would have been absolutely terrifying in my old wooden house. And my dog was much happier hanging out with his best furry friend in the bathroom during the cyclone. They were so good. Didn’t let out a single woof & were very calm, even when branches struck the roof. They knew we would keep them as safe as possible. Hope everyone affected in the US stays safe & they get power, water & sewerage working as fast as possible! The aftermath of no services, limited food etc is a pain in the butt, but we did find that most people were wonderful to each other during that time. Very quick to help.

When the power goes out and the storm is over and he has to go to get supplies or check on people he's going to experience the workout of his life going up and down those stairs. Also what most people don't realize although the view in a high-rise apartment building or condo looks really nice one of the things you have to always remember about is the wind speeds pick up the higher you go off the ground. And especially if you have buildings that are relatively close to each other facing the same direction you have to deal with the Monroe effect., where wind speeds increase as they funnel between building locations and this storm already going to have 155 forecast as maximum wind speed. If that holds to form any loose glass , gravel or concrete is going to feel like being shot at with a shotgun full of Buckshot at close range

I've been thinking a lot about all the people who have lost their lives in Hurricane Ian and all the damage that it did to Florida and South Carolina. After watching many of the interviews with people who made it through the storm surge and hurricane-force winds, it struck me that many of the people, who stayed because they had been through other smaller hurricanes in the past, didn't seem to have a fundamental understanding of the difference between a category 1 hurricane and a category 4 hurricane even though they had been warned that it was on its way several days in advance. The critical information they needed to know in advance is that hurricane wind force increases exponentially, not linearly. A Category 5 hurricane, for example, is 500 times more powerful than a Category 1. How does this relate to property damage? Compared to Category 1, a Category 2 hurricane can generate seven times the amount of damage, while a Category 5 storm can generate 144 times the amount of destruction. If they had understood this, they would have left before the storm arrived and it would have saved many lives. Science education is extremely valuable and saves lives.

They didn’t have a lot of notice to leave as Ian was projected to land north of them. Once it’s as close as it was when they were told to leave it’s almost impossible to get anywhere that would be safe. I’m in the Tampa Bay Area and we’ve been warned so many times and it has never hit that I would hesitate to leave. I put everything in my garage or house, make sure I have water, food and propane and hunker down. Unless I left the week before it was going to hit it’s unlikely that I would have a safer place than my home.

Believe it or not...hurricanes have been battering Florida for time immemorial....not just since the news started broadcasting them or records started to be taken. And, not to belittle the people who die in those hurricanes...but there is some symbiosis involved...as the flood waters recede, they pull a lot of trees out into the oceans and due to the currents, those trees float up to the Inuits above Canada who collect the driftwood in coves and use it for all sorts of things.

Especially since hurricane paths are so unpredictable. After 50 years here you learn what certain areas can withstand. And on any beach, as he is, is not a recommended place to set up a home (no matter what the realtor or builder tell you) Sorry, just saying. I've been in the house my dad lived in and now with my husband passed my daughter and her family live here. The flooding has never come past the sidewalk by the mailbox at the driveway. The problem is that we live in Florida preparing for one hurricane behind the other for years, and it looks to us that nothing is really happening to us. So we get exhausted of being ready and terrified and the hurricane at last moment goes away. Until one day we get hit and cought no ready!

Why do people stay behind during these hurricanes? I have seen on television when there was a hurricane headed to Texas, there were dudes out on the water in Galveston surfing, they said they have to go to Hawaii to get the kind of waves they were getting there ahead of the hurricane.

I grew up in Houston and we'd watch the weather for tropical storms, trying to figure out where the waves would be best. We avoided areas that would have high winds or thunderstorms; it just isn't fun to surf in high winds, and nobody enjoys getting struck by lightning. But it is really only when tropical storms hit that the Gulf Coast has waves worth surfing.

Because Florida has so many hurricanes…. most Floridians think they can ride most of them. And the fact, that a hurricane changes path so many times, this could of taken any turn..who knows and hit Alabama which was a possibility. Living in Bradenton, we were set for the direct path of Ian two days before it happened when two days before that it was going to be a category 3 hitting the panhandle area. (4 hours away) This hurricane literally changed path every day. Fortunately the day before, it headed an hour south of us, and we probably had cat 3-4 winds. We were spared for sure, with really just trees fallen everywhere and no flooding really. But I agree, anyone living on the beach or island itself when a hurricane is approaching whatsoever should always evacuate.

@@fourn7wenty you are not kidding. Florida does have a lot of hurricanes. They can hit Miami on the east side of the state or Tampa Bay on the west side of the state. That maybe why some people won't leave, they believe they can ride it out. The size of a hurricane may also matter.
