About us:
After meeting in New Zealand back in 2017, Beth and Jake have travelled the world, working online and creating memories.
Beth left the UK in 2014 and has been travelling full time ever since, she is the owner of www.sheisthelostgirl.com and has a passion for writing and photography.
Jake has been travelling since 2016 and during this time has perfected his photography and videography skills. He is adventurous and has a passion for the outdoors.
Having lived in various countries around the world, we decided that instead of settling down, we'd build a tiny home inside a van.
We've never done anything like this before, we have no building experience, no electrical experience, and no plumbing experience.
This is a huge learning curve for us and we welcome you to join us in this challenge.
Our Wild Horizons documents a journey of continued adventure.

It’s ironic because the king who built it was arrested for spending too much money building it but now it brings in so much money from visitors! It’s only 1/3 finished on the inside!

Thank you for this video and your great tips as well. You made many great points regarding access and tourists that we are questioning if we want to go through all that especially since we are in our 70's. We are walkers and could go the way you did from the free car park but it may just be one thing we just look at your photos. We were planning to go in May 2024 which is generally been before the tourist season begins in most of Europe but this may be the exception?

You should hike up to tegelberg turn left and hike down straight to the bridge and castle, on these slopes downwards you have plenty of photospots seeing the castle from birdseye perspective ...yes, that valley under the bridge was closed for maintenance but reopened

I think it is a beautiful castle but as a German I prefer and recommend other castles like castle Eltz or castle Hohenzollern(Hohenzollern goes back to 13th century but got modernized in its current state as it was a ruin a few decades before Neuschwanstein was built, so not that old as it is now but I prefer the design) over Neuschwanstein and I say that as a Bavarian, so there is no bias in my words. Anyone who wants to visit a castle with a long history, visit castle Eltz. It is owned by the same family since the 12th century. Neuschwanstein is just not a real historical German castle in my eyes, its the dream of a king from the industrial ages and not even 200 years old. In comparison my old school I went to is a castle built in the 14th century, so already several times older. Germany has so many old and historical places with rich history that I would recommend visiting more historical places that where actual architectural representations of their time and not just a replica.

Our family of 5 ( age 5-73) toured Neuschwanstein in July 2023. It's a waste of time and money. Our tour only included 6 rooms, and we were done in 20 minutes. It's only famous because Walt Disney visited it decades ago, and hijacked the silhouette as his corporate logo. It has no historical significance and was never fully furnished. It's the first McMansion vacation home, the product of Ludwig II's delusional mind. Instead, tour Hohenschwangau, near the carpark in Schwangau. Ludwig actually lived there during his childhood. Then drive to Meersburg, on Lake Constance/Bodensee. The castle there is the oldest continuously occupied Medieval castle in Germany. The exterior isn't as picturesque as Neuschwanstein, but it's 100% The Real Deal.

It's unbelievable you were too cheap and stingy to pay to go inside. Neuschwantstein is truly unique and you were just 36 Euros away for both of you to experience that. You could have spent a bit less on soap and deodorant like most of you smelly van people do and saved up. You missed so much including any understanding of this castle, the marvel of it's construction, the borderline insanity and genius of King Ludwig, the magnificent interiors, the incredible views, the sheer wastefeful extravagance, the stunning detail, the conservation efforts and the skills of those involved and so much more. Everyone viewing this video should ignore you and part with the very small amount of money that offsets the maintenance. There are lots of people but there's a f'cking good reason why! Massive external cladding works have been completed over the past few years which is why it looks so new and artificial. Neuschwantstein is not an old building and has never pretended to be so why would you expect anything else? FFS even the much older Hohenschwangau Castle lower down appears relatively plain and modern. Everyone knows about the viewing points so you added nothing. They're just a bonus. It's very definitely worth visiting not just once but twice because that first visit only gives you a glimpse into the mind of it's builder, neither of you could possibly conceive something like this. A second visit, after you've learned it's history, adds so much more. It's a great shame more extensive tours aren't easily obtainable.

We prefer the great outdoors than inside places. Plus, because of budgeting we’ve been on the road for 9 entire years full time and only have to work a few hours a week so we can really enjoy every moment of our lives 😊 Very worth it I’d say! But thanks for the info!

@@OurWildHorizons It would have been worth it to validate your lifestyle in such a perfect way, not that you need it but to reflect on. You have a simple van and are happy, Ludwig spent his fortune, and more, and lost his life over his obsession with Neuschwanstein before it was completed chasing a dream. It's the antithesis of your lives and I think that's what should have made it compelling to see inside but hey, you can always go back. I never planned to visit although I'd always wanted to see this particular castle at some point. It was only by chance we were close after taking a different route back from Tuscanny. I just couldn't face driving back through the most boring roads in France again so went through Austria instead of Switzerland. I spent a lot of years working for a royal family that make ours look like paupers. I was treated almost like family but soon learned I would never want their money and lifestyle. I knew that already but experiencing it so closely just added something extra that in a way was priceless.
