What you should do is create videos on how to setup hardware firewalls, it’s not something you see much and it’s really important. Because 99% of these gateways cable companies give you are cakeboxes in regard to security, these allows anyone with limed knowledge to hack the hell out of millions of people.

As someone who's looking to get into IT and wants to first try their hand with small stuff like home networking or maybe small businesses this type of rambling is perfect for me. The information you provide about the products you buy cuts out allot of the marketing and fluff companies push and you bring it down to "you pay x for y performance for z amount of time". I'd honestly like to ask you to do a video series rambling and telling these stories so we can get a small glimpse into what we might need/expect in IT and maybe a separate series on home networking and what's practical or what could you reasonably afford. Linus is great for showing top of the line and lvl1tech is great for mid range but I feel like we need more budget home network KZreadrs explaining to us why we should get this ups over the other or which switch we need or even what type of cable works best for what. Tl;Dr great video, thank you for the info, please do more!

I've never owned and operated a proper business but I've always been an advocate of doing it and always wanted to help set it up. It's so cool! Also, I bought one of those 5 port metal switches based on your recommendation. Waiting for it to arrive! My plastic one is dying, I think.

Great video Tech Deals. Yeah, finally a video on network switches. Late Spring, early Summer I decided to dump ATT Uverse for cable. Had Uverse for a long time, around 6 years maybe longer. I get much faster internet speeds for not as much money with cable. When Uverse was installed the tech ran Ethernet cable to all the TVs in the house. If I was smart, I would have shoved a TV in every room and had Ethernet in every room. Up stairs the tech ran one cable to an Ethernet switch then ran Ethernet cables from that switch to all the bedrooms that had TVs in them. So, yeah the TV signals got to the TVs over Ethernet. When I dumped Uverse I lost the ATT gateway with one Ethernet port IN and four ports OUT to the cable modem that has one port IN and only one port OUT. I hooked up a fancy WIFI router to the modem, on Ethernet port IN and eight ports OUT, cool, so now all my Ethernet wiring has internet signals on them. I know, I rambled. Oh, by the way, all my Ethernet cable runs though floors and walls and under carpet, up into the attic. Here my question and maybe a topic for a future video, how can I tell what kind of Ethernet cable I have, CAT 5, CAT 6, etc? The cable company claims to be providing 200 Mbps but I only get 100 Mbps on my Ethernet attached devices BUT I get 200 Mbps on my WIFI devises running on the 5 gHz side of the router. I'm figuring it's something in the wiring or the router, I thought the ports on the router were gigabit ports might be wrong. Anyway, thank you for the great video and thank you for reading this to the end.

Great history lesson. I find many 'computer people' have fond 'memories' of the good ole days of computers. Like Renaissance Fairs, it's an idealized version of a time, they never lived through. Paper tape storage, 8" floppies, drum memory, 110 baud ... ARPANET ... Wow those were the days. ;)

I like your video and a well thorough networking explanation of the early generation of network cabling. I went to college for my associates for network system admin and graduated back in 2014 or 2015, and just listening to the veterans such as yourself and my instructors, and just listening to you guys explain how Networking and IT and cableing back in the 90s, paints such a drastic change of technical troubleshooting history way before our generation of technical issues today. Everytime i hear the stories and truths like this from a veteran like you and my instructors, it still rattles my mind of what you guys have had go go through and its amazing because i salute and enjoy the stories such as yours like this because most people especially today dont realize how it was back in the 90s if how much you guys had to do and the problems on top of trouble shooting compared to todays generation. This is a good video because alotof people today needs to understand what the history of such a truth such as this video needs to realize of how much work and history you guys u guys helped paved for those today. I respect this video and its so amazing of how far weve come just 20years ago :)

@22:00 YES! PLEASE Do another UPS video. I liked your previous one but I was looking for the next tier up - say the $300 to $600 and then $600 to $900 range. I am plugging in about $5000 of hardware. I did some research after your last video that I need to get out again and review. I have quite dirty power here and even though I have Seasonic Platinum PS I still want the spare time for filesystems and virtual machines. Don't need a rack mountable system but those are fine too. More interested in quality for the money. You would THINK that there would be some videos on this subject but I have not found many that go in to detail on quality and features. Usually they say "buy this brand it is the best and get the biggest you can afford" - that is not very instructive.

They all work fine. I have six different switches spread around my house and they're all different brands and models. The main thing I like about larger switches is having an internal power supply so I can just have a normal PC-style power plug instead of a crappy little power adapter taking up two or three slots on my power strip. Not to mention many of those adapters are made so crappy that they're a real fire hazard.

the power on the opposite side of the lan plugs are usually so you don't accidently unplug the power plug when you try to pull a lan cable.

I'm about 21 minutes in and had to pause to say I love these stories and anecdotes. I'm here for the switches for sure but I love the personal side of your background.

Switches! Finally someone made a quality video about switches. I think that TP Link makes great switches for home and small business use. Go with the metal for sure.

Please don't apologize. Because you're having fun with your history lessons, we're having fun as well! If someone doesn't have the 'time', they can go. However, they won't get the care given to them that they'll get from you...very kind, extremely kind.. Sir. Now, back to you...

Amongst the highligts: 31:03 - Definitely the most awesome thing. 34:42 - Plastic peel. 40:31 - Adding the rubber feet. 41:22 - Personally I'd say better without mood music - the silence while the box is unwrapped is very dramatic.

You are a great host. You could do an unboxing of a bunch of power cables and I'll still watch it

Excellent video - I seriously just had to buy one of these switches in the video. Skip to the switches at around 30 minutes in ...

I have both 5 and 8 port metal switch from TP-Link (these exact same models) I had to ponder a bit while at the computer store if I should pick the plastic or metal one. Hearing your advice that we would be better off with the metal ones gives me more confidence with my decision. For me, the price difference seemed like the difference between having a plastic case or a metal one. I chose the metal one at the time because it felt like it would last longer. I didn't realize they have a lifetime warranty. Good to know!

Got to say I like this style more than gameplay background. More power Mr. Deals.

38:58 That slight tapping on the black plastic finish may have caused a scratch or two. Its what I hate about plastic case besides being a dust magnet.
