    I use a red patch cable between modem and router and then yellow patch cables to connect between switches. And another color for other things that might have been hooked up that are not part of the regular network. That way I can always quickly identify the most important network cables. Pull the red cable if an unintended email was send ;-)

    You must have Hercules working there. That UPS in the next rack at the top must be fun to service. Replacing a failed switch is always fun - we're running Cisco and I've lost two in a stack in the last year. We're just starting a project to replace all our access layer switches so hopefully I can get that done before we lose any more.

    Ya, I always put the UPS at bottom of the rack as those things are very heavy. I am guessing they didn't have any space at the bottom for it.

    Luckily I don't have to put them up there. Our engineering department takes care of that for me. Show to to Jose who is an engineering monster! If I design a rack from the ground up, as in our MDF, yes, the UPS units will always go on the bottom. But many of these older racks have designed themselves, meaning no one really put any thought into planning the rack out. That's when you see UPS units at the top of the rack. God bless!

    The one OCD trigger for me is the label on the outside of the left hand wing of the switch between the cage nuts that you had to remove with the old (bad) switch. I was waiting for you to say that you were putting it back as the "last thing to do", but it didn't happen (on camera at least). 😉 We all forget those little things sometimes (at least I do).

    Supported elevated data cabinets in a manufacturing environment. Doing a quad switch stack code upgrade on a scissor lift 16ft in the air is after hours is a royal pain. Hopefully you got out of there at a decent hour to enjoy the day.

    Good video, but I have a few questions. I don't think I have seen "stack" switches? What purpose do they serve other than the obvious purpose a switch normally serves. Are they managed or unmanaged? Who makes them? and.....never admit your old...lol...Thanks

    Stacking switches allow you to connect multiple switches, but manage it as one logical switch.

  • @Murph9000

    Depending on the exact switch manufacturer, model, and licensed features, you can get some interesting high availability from stacked switches; in addition to managing them as one big combined switch. E.g. you can run aggregated links across multiple switches, so that your uplinks, downlinks, and servers have a high availability (fault tolerant) connection. I.e. no single point of failure and no network pause while STP and/or routing reconfigures for the topology change.

  • @NetworkAdminLife

    @NetworkAdminLife

    Ай бұрын

    Good question! But @cablekitten-xn6pz and @Murph9000 have already given great answers. And those answers are exactly why I stack my switches. In the stack we have greater port density and greater fault tolerance. God bless!
