This sounds like the American version of Horrible Histories which is one of the best kids' shows on TV!! It's a historical comedy sketch show based on the books of the same name by Terry Deary and the show is made by the same people as BBC Ghosts. Every British 2000s kid was OBSESSED WITH it as a child. Every episode has a song that's a popular song with the lyrics changed to be historical, the presenter is a rat puppet, and you can tell that everyone is having so much fun making it. This show was so many history nerds' childhood and I would 1000% recommend watching it if you ever get the chance. It's genuinely so funny and has so much soul

Seriously I wanted to say this as well. And if you are doing a costume review I know the show had a recent revival with different cast (I don't think it's as good but that is just me) but you could see how the older costumes accuracy fares against the newer costumes.

That’s the thing, if the show is supposed to be giving actual historical knowledge they can make the effort not to spread misinformation. There’s no reason why the voice over and animation can’t be accurate!!

I was wondering why Lilla Crawford's name sounded so familiar, and then I realized that she was Red Riding Hood in Into the Woods! I loved her in that- she was one of the best performances in the cast!

The never-ending multi-front battle between producers, directors, actors, budget, and the One-person Wardrobe Department with a little bit of knowledge. "That doesn't look 'Pilgrim'!", That's because your story takes place 150 years later... "You made these three so quickly, can I get another there but distressed?" Of course, who needs sleep. "I have (insert medical condition here), I can't wear corsets." Ok, your film will just be roasted by Ms. Banner and every other Cos-Tube with cred. I wish costumes in films weren't the last on the budget and in thought.

The funny thing is every medical condition an uninformed person might claim prevents them from wearing a corset would be helped by wearing a properly fitted corset.

@@priestessofkek2406 I was JUST thinking that! The only medical condition, I can think of, that would make wearing a corset impossible is severe allergies to certain materials. But in that case, they probably shouldn’t have a job that requires harsh materials on their skin in the first place. I write this as someone who can’t wear synthetic materials.

The real problem seems to be that most costumers only get to work with modern clothes. They don't get the expertise or experience with historical costumes.

I'm not sure that's true, as a costumer myself, a lot of us make a lot of effort to learn historical costume because it's so interesting and modern fashion is easier to pick up on the fly. One of the biggest issues I'm aware of is difficulty sourcing historically accurate costumes as budgets and deadlines are so tight and a lot of costumes stores simply don't have that much available. It's rare that a production will pay out for custom-made garments, because it takes longer and requires more employees. Another issue is directors and producers not liking how historically accurate garments look, so they insist on modernising them because it fits their idea of how things should look (which is infuriating, as there's a stupid hierarchy that prevents the costume team producing their best work).

The person doing the hiring would have to have that as a priority themselves in the first place, which I presume also goes back to the director and producers’ visions and priorities.

@VeronicaSipe great point, that is also a massive issue! It's like the whole corset issue - there are plenty of corset specialists where I work, but they don't get hired for those jobs because the employers don't understand how important it is.

It's quite upsetting that Netflix greenlit an educational history show but did not give it the budget to make it historically correct. The characters are even talking about historic clothing, which makes it even worse, because how can they be educational when they are not factually correct? They are literally teaching kids the wrong things.

i like that you give leeway to the costume designer for likely being extremely overworked! but also your reactions to that elizabeth sketch is priceless

This show really reminds me of horrible histories! Like a sketch shows covering ALL different time periods thats based on kids books?? Literally the same format. Honestly if you watched horrible histories I would love you forever, that was such a big part of my childhood and a _massive_ reason for me becoming a historian.

I HAD NO IDEA THAT THESE BOOKS WERE TURNED IN TO A SHOW!!! For context, I am a children's librarian. We bought a set of these books in 2016, though I didn't realise they were old enough to have been around when Bernadette was a kid. My students love them, and go searching the non-fiction shelves for these tiny biographies tucked between the larger books more common in children's NF. I am totally going to need to watch this show now...

I remember seeing them all the time as a kid in my local library and at school! (I think they show them early in the video with the year 2006 next to it, but they were coming out over the course of years in the 2000s.)

16:42 Bernadette got it wrong here, before the cage crinoline there was crinoline... it was a fabric made of horsehair and wool or cotton and was stiff enough to replace multiple petticoats and still keep the desired skirt shape. In French magazines from the 1840s they talk about how light they are specifically.

0:38 Bernadette is really channeling her Missy/Doctor Who vibes with that elegantly disheveled aesthetic, and I'm living for it.

My kids loved the Who Was Show! He keeps asking when a new season is going to come out, but I told him I don't think one is (which really disappointed him), but he has come to accept it and just keeps rewatching the show (down to where he can recite line by line). The show was amazing.

This format has been used by several shows. "History Bites" (Canadian) came first. Then, "Horrible Histories" (British). Both are on KZread.

Epic Rap Battles of History is kind of the same, if you only focus on the musical numbers.

they didn't forget to put ruffles on the neckline, most often big productions shy away from decorating the neckline in 18th century dress, you can wear a fichu instead, you can choose to not wear one but you would always have a ruffle or a lace or anything around your decoleté, it just looks wrong and awkward otherwise. I find it interesting how no one ever represents M.Antoinette in a chemise a la reine, like an article of clothing she literally became synonymous with, as in, that was named after her

People always want to portray Marie Antoinette as this super ostentatious, out of touch Queen who loves all things lavish and luxurious. It matches with her “let them eat cake” persona they like to impose on her. A Chemise a la reine would make her look too normal and down to earth and ruin their villainess image for her. In the few clips they showed of her in this video from that show, they’re obviously making her seem like a snobby brat.

Bernadette needs to do an analysis of the Horrible Histories series. Their costuming game did improve as series progressed (and has since gone rogue again).

OMG! Is that the Broadway Annie star and Into the Woods Little Red Riding Hood?? I’m a 64 year old grandma who is a total fan girl! Seeing Bernadette and Lila together is causing me palpitations!

As a theater costumer... The comments about working within a short time frame and limited budget are so accurate. You just don't have time to spend several months making one costume. You usually have 4-6 weeks to costume a dozen or more actors. So sometimes you just have to make due and take what shortcuts you can.

I watched this show when I was a kid, like probably an unhealthy amount, and want to say, Lila Crawford, in every thing I’ve seen her in but especially this show, is a great actress. She did a really good job of giving these characters distinct and memorable personalities. She talks about struggling with the Shakespeare parts, but to this day, this shows version of Shakespeare is the definitive versions of Shakespeare in my mind, if only because of the personality she gave it. She made all of her characters memorable for a young audience and I appreciate that. I think most of it comes down to the delivery, I don’t know if anyone else could pull some of those scenes off. Anyways, I hope Lila’s doing well, and I am so glad that Bernadette did this video, it was really cool to see this type of content for a show that I legit believed only my little brother and I know about.

Amelia Jenks Bloomer was a cousin of mine, many times removed. Our family has always been inordinately proud of her.

The energy was so much fun in this one! The rapport of old friends just chatting about a shared topic of interest is great. Bernadette's "disheveled editor" look was a whole vibe; loved that. The balance between gently critiquing the historical inaccuracies, and also commending the wardrobe designer's skill in working with what she had and making do and celebrating the successes was perfect, and very respectful. All around, what a fun day this must have been. Thank you both for sharing this "behind the scenes" look at this history show, that I now have to go check out!

I'm a librarian and those books are still really popular with kids, there are so many of them. I had no idea there was a show, that's amazing.

My aunt died on May 19, 2018, and believe it or not, this was the show that I binged at least 3 times while in denial. I am genuinely so happy that someone is talking about it, this show got me through a really, REALLY tough time. I then became a theater kid, and I was genuinely shocked when I watched Into the Woods for the first time and was like, “I recognize Little Red from the Who Was Show!” Like, this genuinely made such a BIG difference in my life. Thank you for talking about this. Someone had to.

I loved this Show and I still rewatch it sometimes. I think Lilla was by far the best cast member! I'm sad that Netflix didn't renew it. We'll never know who got to eat the grapes.

as someone who was like 10-11 when this show was first out on netflix, it truly was the horrible histories of america. i watched both but most of my friends have watched the who was show and we all love it! we still reference it and talk about it all the time! i adore this show so much and it has inspired my love of history!!

at this point I can actually feel your pain every time something, someone, somewhere talks about corsets breaking ribs and such 😄 this was so much fun though!

The decision to adapt the books into a show kinda seems like it was inspired by the success of CBBC's Horrible Histories. Would definitely watch a video breaking how the accuracy of the costumes in that one too!

This is one of only two channels where I always watch the advertising... It's just always fun!

the challenge in most productions like this is mainly the budget. because as much as a costume department wants accuracy, the producers wont shell out money for everything to be custom-made. resulting to designers and stylists making do of whats available from rental shops or DIYs.

I want to throw in another vote for you guys to watch Horrible Histories! I didn't get to see it till I was an adult and I'm still obsessed with the show and have passed it on to several younger family members 😂
