This video demonstrates the magic of Nested Styles in InDesign (2021). You learn how nested styles let you apply character styles to text within a paragraph, starting at the beginning of a paragraph, and ending at a specific character, thereby making life simple for you, so do watch the video till the end, and do share your thoughts in the comments.

Key point - if you've already created a Character Style and applied it to your text, you need to remove that by clicking [None] in the Character Styles panel. The more specific Character Style will override the Paragraph Style and you won't see the change!

@@CreativityGarage followed you. Really good tutorials. I already made about 5-6 books using InDesign. Working on one now, your tutorials are good refresher course since the last one I made was two years back due to the pandemic, very helpful.

Hello! Thank you very much! This is very useful. Please tell me if there is a way to change the text size only for the footnotes, taking in account that footnotes have all italic, bold and regular text. Thank you!

Choose Type and then Document Footnote options. In the Numbering and Formatting tab select the formatting appearance of the reference number and footnote text. Lastly, click the Layout tab and select options that control the look of the footnote section and you’re done.

I would like to be able to apply two paragraph styles to the same line. As in this video I would like the product name to be left oriented, then the description indented similar to what one would do if you were using tables. I could do this by setting up a table just seems a lot of work for 2 or 3 items that I want to do this for. What I have done is put a return in then type the description but I really want them to line up, not be a drop down.

Before applying nested styles, make sure you have already created the two paragraph styles you want to use. Then click and drag to select the portion of text where you want to apply both paragraph styles. This should be the portion where one style will be applied, and then the other will take over. In the "Paragraph Styles" panel, double-click the paragraph style that you want to apply first (the one that will apply to the beginning of the line). This will open the "Paragraph Style Options" dialog box. Then setup the nested style by going to the "Drop Caps and Nested Styles" section. Click on the "New Nested Style" button (the "+" icon) to add a new nested style. In the "Apply Style" dropdown, choose the second paragraph style you want to use for the rest of the line. Lastly, in the "Through" field, specify how many characters or words you want the first style to apply to before switching to the second style. For example, if you want the first style to apply to the first 10 characters, enter "10" in the "Through" field. You should see a preview of the nested styles in the preview area of the "Paragraph Style Options" dialog box. Once you're satisfied with the setup, click "OK" to apply the changes.

If I change an object style for a speech balloons, because I like it better for a style that just creates a balloons, does it do it for all of that style through out all of the document?

Hitting 'enter' serves to confirm the changes you've made to the current style and move on to the next style in the sequence.
