    Supporting Homekit used to be a pain in the ass for developers because it wasn't just a software update but you also needed a special chip within the device. I believe Apple have now done a u-turn regarding this but it wasn't really Nest's fault that 1st gen devices weren't compatible.

  • @GearsGadgets

    @GearsGadgets

    6 жыл бұрын

    I agree about the 1st gen. But since Apple opened support without needing hardware implementation it would be nice if nest would just commit and give a definite answer on their HomeKit plans. Just my opinion after spending a ton of money on their products, it would be nice to know their working on it.

    I think Apple just opened support for it. But I don't think it will be top priority. Nest is owned by Google and they're betting a lot on smart home technology so by purposely delaying any Homekit integration, it persuades people to adopt the Google ecosystem.

    Why give a definite answer when vague ones keep you hanging on? If Nest came out tomorrow and said "F*ck Homekit!", you'd be up in arms, and switch out of spite. They'll just keep you dangling; it's obviously working. :)

    i think apple only opened up because its a market they decided they didnt want to lock everyone out of since they had no interest in expanding into it. idk if people notice, but apple likes to make only apple stuff work with apple as a way to force people to buy and lock themselves into the apple product environment. its also why apple is goddamn expensive. they give off this premium feel so you want it, ad once you get it, you just spent so much you are invested and trapped. but again, i think apple realized it isnt interested in that market, so they backed off. theyll always have the option of tightning their grip again in a generation or two when the areas they are interested in have been re-evaluated.

    This is not what everyone thinks it is. It only uses the sensor currently selected and change the temperature for the whole house, I repeat the whole houses against the sensor you selected and your desired temperature. So it doesn’t only change the temperature for the room you have selected. I don’t find it efficient at all.

  • @andysmith9140
    @andysmith91405 жыл бұрын

    From what I understand, the nest only has two output switch connections (heating and hot water). So this would mean you could only switch on the whole heating system at once and wait until it heats/cools the particular room you are currently in. So let's say you're in the bedroom which takes 30 mins to heat up, and the living room takes 10 mins to heat up. This means that when the bedroom reaches the desired temperature, the living room will be like an oven. This is not an energy efficient way of running your system. From what I understand, the only way to do this is to have completely separate switching systems for each room i.e. separate programmable room thermostats, with individual valves, working independently of each other sending heated water to only the required radiators. I have installed these systems before a few times, so if I have this wrong please tell me. All the best 👍

    That’s exactly what I thought. Like how would this make any sense. U just kept the heater on longer to make the room across the house warmer, meanwhile the other room is much warmer cause it still have the other sections heat. So confused how this makes any sense. Couldn’t u just turn up the heat to 74 Ti make your rooms go up by 2-3 degrees. It’s essentially the same thing

    We had a major problem installing the Nest thermostat. We have a two stage furnace that apparently requires special wiring for the Nest. We did not know we had a two stage furnace until I inadvertently blew a fuse in the furnace panel (in the attic). You may have THREE power supply switches to your furnace. You need to turn them all off before you start. We tried to work with Nest and the technician had us shift wires over and over during a one hour period. It was a nightmare of difficulty in handling tiny wiring. Nothing worked. Even the contractor we hired after this debacle was not able to get the Nest to function properly and stop giving error messages. IF YOU ASSUME THAT YOUR FURNACE IS COMPATIBLE WITH NEST YOU MAY BE WRONG. We returned the Nest and put in an Emerson (easy read) thermostat. It works fine and our single story home is very comfortable. Sometimes modern digital equipment is more trouble than it is worth. If you want to install a smart thermostat yourself, or use a contractor who is not a "Nest specialist" you may regret it. Sometimes "simpler" is really better. sanjosemike

    What an amazing improvement by Nest! Wonderful. The only thing Nest needs now is to talk with Carrier, Trane and other companies and get variable speed commands programmed so we can control the highest end variable speed/inverter driven heat pumps offered by these companies. Nest is really an "on off" thermostat now and can't control the variable speed highest end air conditioners that are made today... oh, and homekit support that you brought up is good too!

  • @bertraminc9412

    @bertraminc9412

    6 жыл бұрын

    That makes sense but I'm not a fan of "jerry rigging" my systems because the manufacturers only consider profit and not function. When Nest realizes that variable speed is the top of the line and the way to go, they will produce the code to set the speeds correctly. I'll wait for it. I already installed my home AC so they have about 20 years to figure it out! :D Thanks anyway.

    I just replaced my AC with a new system with a variable speed air handler. I had the installer put on a new Nest E. The system seems to be utilizing the variable speed operation of the air handler as expected with slow starts and different speeds. Am I missing something? The installer said it would work and it is doing what I expected.

    Your systems variable speed capabilities have nothing to do with your thermostat. They have control boards or modules that will control the speed according to airflow/cooling demand. Inverter units and communicating systems will never be Nest compatible across the board because manufacturers want you to use their $400 communicating thermostats that are preprogrammed to access all the features and diagnostics of the system. That’s the manufacturers fault, not nest. It wouldn’t be feasible for nest to create a thermostat to work with specifically with every communicating system available.

    i would like to see them release actual vents that work with the sensors and thermostat that dont rely on a server or the cloud to work. imo while the ability to designate which sensor the thermostat sources its temperatures, having multiple sensors imo only really makes sense if you are able to individually control the temps in each room. if its cool in the bedroom but warm in the living room, it would shut the bed room vent and open the living room vent or vice versa depending on what you wanted. i seen vent options out there but they all seem to rely on a cloud server and its own hub to work. i never got why everything needs a hub either. with the right communication language, programming and decent range, we shouldn't ever need a hub to handle all our smart devices. i honestly just think they do it so we have to buy one more thing.

  • @GearsGadgets

    @GearsGadgets

    I know another company did the vent thing but they are WAY cost prohibitive for mainstream. I am guessing that is what keeps nest out of that market. There are so many different sizes in vents as well that makes it an inventory issue.

    I loved nest for the 8 hours I had it , BUT nest didn’t have an adjustable temperature band/swing so my air conditioner was consistently cycling on and off . The thing about the nest temperature sensors is that you can only schedule them in the 4 predefined time frames for morning, day, evening, and night. The hours defining those times are fixed which is really really stupid considering the nest is a smart software-heavy thermostat that costs much more money than a regular one which has better scheduling.

    So if you have a cold room, it could show say 67, and it heats it until is 70 meanwhile now the house is to hot and it begins to cool? I don't understand how this can work unless you have fins in your duct work to control where the air goes, so you only heat the one room that needs it.

  • @GearsGadgets

    @GearsGadgets

    4 жыл бұрын

    No it will only listen to one sensor at a time. They wont compete with each other. So you will heat that one room to 70 and the other rooms might be 73. The idea is you get to control the temp in the room you are in at that moment. This works better for homes where the thermostat is maybe in the living room, but your bedroom is 5-6 degrees different. It lets you say “I don’t care what the temp is in the living room, I only want you to make my bedroom comfortable for this range of time”

To make full use, we would need to purchase another Nest E and I fail to see how they are more efficient than a standard programmable thermostat.

    I have a two zone house and two ecobee thermostats with 3 sensors each. I believe in saving money. Ecobee s was more reasonable and at the time offered a better solution and so does. I believe that some of the smart devices can just be gimmicky. Nest has integrated so many devices you have to wonder how often would you need to use them and is it overworked. I just want a smart thermostat to focus on the temperature nothing else just one job and is an important one. Just like i want the Philips hue smart system to focus on lights. My alarm to focus on alarming. My security cams to focus on security. Not to mention nest devices are costly compared to other devices that do the same or more. Just my preference. Thanks for sharing good video review.

    Depends on if the room you are putting the sensors in is hotter or colder than where your thermostat is located. If the room my thermostat in is 76 degrees but the room I place the sensor in is 74 degrees, there is no reason to have the thermostat kick on the AC to cool the room I am NOT in to 74. Basically it just depends on every situation. For me, the sensors are more of a comfort play vs a money saving play. I can be sure the babies room stays at the perfect temperature all night and if my room or other rooms are not right I can start to adjust vents accordingly to balance it myself. Sorry I know this is a droning on reply but its just a complicated situation depending on your individual housing setup.

    My Nest E has no C wire for continuous power. The Nest turns the furnace on for a few seconds once in a while to charge its internal battery. Not long enough to actually generate any heat which would be a problem in the summer. With this sensor now needing to communicate with the Nest, how much more of a power requirement will it place on the Nest base unit? I hope it doesn't cause any problems as a result.

    unless you have a furnace which will blow air directly to the affected area only, you are looking at that room dictating the temperature for the entire house. so while the living room does not need to be any hotter, it will get hotter until the temperature for the baby room is attained. sensors work well in theory but in reality the vast majority of homes do not have smart furnaces to go only where the temp change is needed. You may se your heating.and cooling costs go haywire.

    True, only difference is that Apple isn't selling imessage hardware to the masses and limiting its function on competing devices. Nest is a standalone hardware that is limiting its function on competing ecosystems and it seems like a stupid decision to me. IMHO of course.

    Each reads temperature in its location. You can pick which area you want it to use in the app. So if it’s 75 in the bedroom with the sensor and the thermostat is at 72 on cool and you pick the bedroom as the area to use it will cool until the bedroom hits the temperature picked.

    The only reason they aren’t supporting HomeKit is because of of Google . If you don’t know nest is owned by Google , you can control nest with google home and google devices . If HomeKit was added you could ask Siri , one of google home main competitors. Basically they want you to buy google products not apple

  • @GearsGadgets

    I understand all of that but I think it’s stupid. People who are heavily invested in the Apple ecosystem will ultimately buy a product that supports HomeKit over one that doesn’t. That is a market of millions of people. It is not smart business. HomeKit will only grow in the future, Nest needs to get on board. Same reason Apple created a music app for android phones, it’s dumb not to take that revenue from people who choose a competing manufacturer.

    The motivation to support HomeKit would be to protect market share. The only reason nest leads the way right now is because there isn’t much competition. The day someone else comes along that has as good of a product line and supports HomeKit is the day nest looses to 223 million customers using iOS. Waiting for that day to come is risky. Also, supporting HomeKit today is a big selling point regardless of competition since again, it represents 223 million customers.

    iOS represents approximately 500 Million phones worldwide. Whether HomeKit is behind the game or not (likely subjective) isn’t the issue, regardless HomeKit is a major player in the game and if anyone wants to sell smart home gadgets worldwide, they probably shouldn’t ignore 500 million buyers simply because they don’t like the remote control they use to operate their smart home gadgets. Again, the Nest product line is only hurting itself by having unabashed OS support.

    Borna Prpic That would make no sense, Google Home already works on Android devices making it redundant to use home kit on an Android device. Why would Apple do this for Google’s products because Google refuses to develop their products to work with competing OS’s with major market share? It’s really simple, Smart Home device manufacturers should make their products work for all major platforms, I promise you it is costing them sales which in turn makes it a stupid decision. The ONLY thing limiting Nest to Google Home is doing is letting Android fanboys puff out their chest in defiance which is one of the dumber trends in tech today. I don’t get why people are so married to OS tech that they will defend their OS’s honor aggressively on social media when it’s ALL really so close in greatness anyway.

  • @GearsGadgets

    @GearsGadgets

    Matthew Montgomery again, iOS represents 500 million users who don’t want to use HomeKit AND an additional app Google Home to control their house. Asking iOS users to download Google Home to control their smart home is just as stupid as anyone asking Android users to download a HomeKit app to use their smart home devices. There is a reason Apple isn’t developing HomeKit for Android because it would be ridiculous to think Android users would use HomeKit. Again, if you are going to sell smart home devices, you probably shouldn’t make it more difficult for 500 million of your potential customers.
