When I was a teen and started walking our dog by myself, my mum told me to remember, its the dogs walk. This is his time. If he wants to spend 10 minutes sniffing a bush and its safe for him to do so, let him. This is his time to do what he wants.

But why do most dog trainers, while training the owners on how to teach your dog to walk the proper way make the dog stand right near the owner, very short and loose lead. It hardly gives the dog the freedom it needs to do what he wants?

@@sydney13ism for me I have two kinds of walks, ones structured and the other is sniffing. Usually when it’s a structured walk I walk around other people and dogs, I don’t want her everywhere and I need her to know that if anything, look to me. But when it’s sniffing I really don’t give a damn there’s no one around for her to get too excited about and especially no dogs. I like to separate them bc she understands context better and sometimes when its a free walk and someone walks by she’ll look back to me because she understands our boundaries

This is such a simple concept I feel like a lot of dog owners don't understand. Regularly give your dog time to do what they want and sniff around. Even humans sometimes need to go to Target and just look around 😆

I walk my dog daily and I let her lead the way. She is a 14 year old lab mix so I feel like she earned and deserves to go wherever she wants. She loves to go to the park at sit and feel the wind on her face.
It's sad to see how nervous the dog is all the time but you can tell her owners really love and treat her right, hopefully she can overcome it
It was nice to see responsible owners for once who are just overwhelmed with the circumstances :')
Our very nervous rescue dog suddenly had a boost in confidence when we let him off the lead for the first time! It was remarkable.

Wasn't that maybe because the dog was more used to being off leash than on leash?
i have a dog that is just as nervous as this one. we adopted her from a shelter 10 months ago and she's only warmed up to me, still terrified of the rest of the family. really excited to see the rest of this episode, as I've never dealt with such an anxious dog Edit: its been a year since we've adopted her! she's still skittish, but its not nearly as bad as before. she now rolls over for tummy rubs for me, and will allow other members of the family to pet her. she will also come when other members of the family call her, something that we thought she woulf never do as she would only respond when i call. she'll also play with me by chaising me around! maybe in another year she'll play with other members of the family. thanks for all the replies telling me to hang in there, i love Dezi with my whole heart ♥

This dog would 100% benefit from having a “job”, most likely something to do with scent work. Her owners should buy a scent kit online & do some training with her, they’ll be amazed at the confidence it’ll give her!

I split my walks with my dog. When we’re going for a hike or a long walk I reinforce her keeping up and close to my wife and myself. But on the flip side when we’re just out and about or walking a short walk I let her take her time and just explore and enjoy herself. Really helps her focus when we’re up in the mountains and I need to keep her safe from cliffs and snakes and such
If you got a nervous dog, its OKAY to give it space. People always want to cuddle and pet them and stroke them but your just rewarding nervous behavior and honestly, overwhelming the poor dog.
I had a roommate who had a VERY nervous and skittish rescue dog. Was very sad to see...we did our best to love on her lavishly, but whatever she went through prior to adoption must have been a doozy, I have never seen a dog with that level of anxiety :(.

How cute 🤗🤗🤗
Truly amazing a simple thing of just letting the leash a little bit longer and up. She’s happy she’s so happy I’m happy for her and her two owners too mother and daughter.
If you really want to enrich your dogs walk, take them out really early in the morning - all the nightime/dawn animals would have been scurrying around and their scents would still be strong and not "polluted" by human smells. Our dog wasn't a scent hound (lurcher, so sight hound instead) but, whenever we took her out super early, she would spend the whole time with her nose to the ground, just running back & forth 🥰
I love this woman, intelligent and so much compassion ❤
Awh poor sweetheart went through so much 😢 thank you guys so much for loving her and doing anything for her to get past her trauma 💗
I'm trying to help our very nervous dog. I would welcome more tips like these in the video. Our family is disfuctional, but i'm trying to praise the dog and be patient with him, and it is helping. He is happier now that he's not getting mixed signals, and there is less yelling and arguing. I also found out how happy he is when I take him for a walk and let him lead me. He doesn't want to walk long distances, is agressive towards other dogs, and will not take any treats when outside, but handfeeding him his kibble and praising him for being brave is helping. It is scary for me to be the person who takes agency, and to assert myself to the people who raised me, and there is tension, but things are slowly getting better.

Dogs like routine, especially nervous ones. So, if possible, get up and go to bed at the same time everday. Walk them, feed them at the same time everyday etc. This applies to your routine a smuch as theirs. Having an idea of what is happening in the house and when helps them feel more at ease. Be as strict/consistant as you can. Over time it helps.

I love your gentle approach with the dogs, and with what ease you can help them. As a result, I have well behaved pets that are such a joy, with much less effort and work on my part. Thank you.

I would really love an episode or some tips on teaching nervous dogs like this one to play with toys and chew.
I had this sweet rescue beagle who was nervous like this. He warmed up over time, but never could get used to certain people, including my dad. It helped that he spent the vast majority of his time outside. He didn't want to be in the house unless the weather was bad. When I moved out into an apartment, he had a breakdown. I had to put him in anxiety medicine.
Kudos to Victoria, I love watching this.

They really love their dogs. Bless her. ❤️
My sister had a rescue from Kosovo. She was quite shy and nervous to begin with she did get over it for the most part but would revert to fear when you waved your arms around her. I looked after her often in her home and a sweeter dog you couldn’t ask for. I miss you Cooper you were an absolute doll. Consider adopting a dog from abroad the dividends will be worth it.

My Nellie is also a beagle mix rescue and super nervous 😅
What a nice idea 🥰
I wish I could watch the full episode.
I befriended a friend's dog and I let him pick the pace most of the time when we walked atleast once a day, my friend once remarked how rarely he poo'd. I laughed, everytime with me, even if we were out multiple times a day, fairly frequently twice. I saw the walk as his time, the only time I forced him was when we were going somewhere, or when it rained and he didn't want to go.
I love this video
I rescued a cat in Cyprus which is funny to hear from them. Pets do free roam there (lots of donkeys in North) but none seem to be taken in. It's also common to just chain your dog up for hours on end, no walk. I know someone who even let's their tortoise walk around in the back yard. It was odd but I was on the northern side mostly, a side that is slowly being put through a huge inflation, as during one year, 7TL per 1USD turned to 12TL per 1USD. Just no money
I unknowingly did this to one of my puppies. I have adopted a brother and a sister and they have 4 puppies, i gave away the male and i keep the 3 females, one of them is really anxious about everything that moves, makes me wonder why because her other two siblings aren't like that. When I started walking them off leash and let her sniff around, i noticed she is more confident and less anxious.

Victoria, my favourite person ♥
Dogs are not ppl , they don’t walk. Walking beside owner is not natural. If we want to have a well trained dog that walks beside us we have to balance with his needs also. The walk should be sprinkled with free time and play time .

We have a traumatised rescue dog. We just gave him the time to do what he wanted. At first he needed to stop every few metres and look around, sniffing, to make sure it was safe to continue. We let him. He's a happy old man now though he won't last much longer because he has a terminal illness. Such a blessing to have been part of his life.
My sensitive blind dog takes it personally every time I correct our new puppy. She won’t come, eat or anything if I corrected the pup that day.

They should do scent training with her, just for fun, both inside and out, just so she can get that need met, and it makes it a fun activity with her owners.. Which again will build more confidence. But I also saw them petting her, and feeding her anxiety, with this human - I'm so sorry for your past. So instead of getting past it, they keep it living.. She feeds off their energy, and if their energy is: - oooh you poor little girl, you are so scared, aren't you scared, yes you are, oooh I'm so sorry that you had to experience that pain, come here, I will cuddle you, ooh my poor baby... Then she's stuck in that trauma.

I've got a traumatised Spanish greyhound. I've had her for 3 years now. She wouldn't even sniff the ground until a few weeks ago. Without knowing I have been encouraging her nervousness - but after watching the dog daddy I've adapted his methods with nervous aggressive dogs to my dog as they work just the same. I've had a massive breakthrough with her and she is definitely a lot better in so many areas of her life already. I could cry with relief now. I have a long way to go but I know I'm on the right track. Get a very close fitting collar your dog cannot get out of. I have 2 leads attached to mine, one on my body, in case I drop one as I know she would bolt and not come back. That helps you feel more relaxed on the walk too. You must be able to get a lead on your dog in case you need to leave the house in an emergency or for a vet visit etc - so persevere it's so worth it. I'm happy to tell you more of my experiences with my Nola if you want me to. I almost gave up on her at first as she was so traumatised - but I'm so glad I carried on. It's taken her almost 3 years to start wagging her tail a little bit! I totally understand how hard it is as I've lived it too. But if nothing else remember it is vital to have a collar on yours and be able to put a lead on just in case of any emergency. Hugs from Liz xxx

Then the harness is too loose, I've walked many dogs and have had to inform a lot of owners that either the collar is too tight or WAY too loose and their harness needs to be tighter if they're bound to escape. If you can fit two fingers under a collar or harness you know it isn't too tight, make sure the harness doesn't sag and that it doesn't rub when the dog walks! 😊

Wouldn't one of those real long dog leashes, the kind that curl up in a plastic ring the owner has, which gives a real large area for the dog to roam on it's own be better than having to walk with the dog so much? Victoria is still nearby, of course, but just not as close.

They are dangerous! It also helps the dog knowing that you are with them and is good exercise for humans too!
One thing that's always always bugged me about seeing other people walk their dogs is for them to be like "This is a WALK we are WALKING" and pull on the leash and yank the dogs to keep moving. You should only do that if they're about to 1. walk into a dangerous place like lunge into the street or 2. they're about to eat something they shouldn't. Even then, be careful not the hurt your dog!
