Joe Bonamassa is one of the luckiest guys on the planet. First, and mainly, he's got skill. Secondly, he has all that amazing vintage equipment he surrounds himself in in such beautiful homes. Granted he works his A off for it no doubt. I've seen the guy live at a regular town theater on a weekday and he played like he was being honored at a live performance at the Royal Albert Hall. So I tip my hat to the guy for always giving those who buy the tickets their money's worth. My wife doesn't care too much for blues or guitar, but had a world of fun at his nearly 3 hr show. And all that nice vintage equipment he has is just mouth watering! Can you imagine waking up and just playing whatever vintage strat, tele or paul thru whatever gear you want?

Cropper might be the most underrated guitarist. His influence is still heard today in diverse genres. Most people don't know his name, but they know of him. From sould, to rock and funk and even into gospel and jazz, his influence is still heard. One of the greats who was hamble and content enough to be in the background adding great onrnamentation to great records.

Cropper is a Legend. He knows where to put the hook. He is never showy especially if he and the guys ( Duck, Booker) are the backing group for an artist. I have seen Cropper on video pull off a few good but short and tasteful solos when he and the guys are the main act. Or it’s there turn to shine. Listen to his stories on how he got Green onions on the radio. Fantastic story. A legend.

Love listening to Joe share his wealth of knowledge. Such a cool, gracious guy. And great musician of course.

Thanks for Posting here ! Steve Cropper was a big influence on us when we were in H.S. bands that without the music Steve played on would not have enough hit R&B and Soul Music Covers to work our Fraternity gigs! Thank U Steve!

That bit at 2.50 is one of the reasons I play guitar.

Cropper says he used Gibson Sonomatic strings, 12, 16, 28(w), 32, 44, 56. After a while he discarded the 28(w) G string and put another 16 B string on instead, which was how he could get the bends in Green Onions for example.

I had no idea this was a thing. On to the next 3.

I'm a no-talent guitar playing fanatic but Joe is like hearing one of my family talk to me. He stills loves the stuff like us.

@@whynottalklikeapirat especially because considering all the albums that he has a out and he tours about 30 other blues artist entire catalog at the same time.the man is a workaholic and just an incredible guitar player and he guitar nerds out just like I do. He's not my favorite blues guitar player but he's one of the top 5. He's absolutely incredible guitar player man and he's got a world-class collection.

Some UK magazine named Cropper the best guitar player of all time many years ago and My first thought at the time was that they were dead on. Cropper changed my life. I wouldn't be playing without his influence.

Nice episode. Though I think he used considerably less reverb.

Dang, I thought Steve was actually going to be there. Oh well, I appreciated Joe’s nice little rundown on his gear and technique. I wouldn’t mind something a little more in depth though.😉 One thing about Telecaster players from the 60s was how they often played with the strings adjusted way to low so they got plenty of fret buzz. Steve did that too at times, I believe. It seemed to be part of the guitar’s funky charm. I’ve always wondered how intentional that was. Did the guitarists lower the strings to get the buzz or did they just go with the factory setup and accept the buzz as part of the instrument’s sound? Anyone know?

I saw that UK gig with Cropper playing a Marshall. I guess they just used what was local. It was interesting to hear, because it had a softer attack and was a little broken up. It sounded cool, but not like him so much.

Getting a bit low on amps Joe, need to stock up

Mr. Telecaster. If Janis had Booker T and M.G’s instead of Big Brother as a backing band at Monterey. She wouldn’t of needed all the heroin in Afghanistan that year.

Hendrix in one song played all the notes Steve played in all his career. I don’t get the fascination with this guy.

Well Hendrix did, he went down to Memphis to learn from Cropper before he became famous.

i don't get it. Why would you bother to have a 60 Tele and then use effects like delay and overdrive to demonstrate the god that is Steve Cropper? Play through a Harvard-like set up and get the tone required. Makes Steve's licks sound like typical suped-up JB riffs.

Too much reverb, Steve‘s sound is much dryer. For me your playing in this video doesn’t sound like Steve Crooper at all.
