Nepal: The battle for souls - BBC World Service Documentaries

For most of its history, Nepal - once a Hindu state - was closed off from the world. It wasn’t until the 1950s that it began to open up to visitors.

Today Nepal has one of the fastest growing Christian communities in the world, driven in part by the arrival of South Korean missionaries. The BBC’s Asia Hub has gained rare access inside one of their missions, in the Himalayas, to explore what is driving the change.
As Kevin Kim reports in “The battle for souls”, encouraging someone to convert to another religion is illegal in Nepal and some are concerned that the missionaries are eroding Nepal’s traditions and ancient culture.
Directed and edited by: Kevin Kim

Instead they are helped because they are part of new community and it is the duty of christians to help anyone needing help. Also once a person reads New Testament they almost always become christian. Unfortunately, hindus dont understand this. They think pastors used money. But that will not be the case. They way the people convert is not because of money but because of the New Testament. Money comes lateronly to support so they could help little bit themselves. New converts dont get rich rather they get little bit so to get by. There are hundreds of testimonies on youtube of hindus becoming christians, no one says it was money but always what they feel after they understand the message. Also Jesus was poor that's why poor and underpiviledged find easier to listen to his message rather than to some king or warrior.

Converting someone's religion is illegal. Despite that christian missionaries doesn't stop. They say nepal government only supports hindu. What an idiotic thing they said. Nepal government is not against christianity. Government is against missionaries. Also i have seen many christian missonaries calling abrahamic religion to hinduism because of caste system. I agree about caste system. Hindu's caste system is seen in Nepal. But it is illegal to discriminate someone in the name of caste. Also i think i remember christian missionaries saying something against idol worshiping of hindus. Lol. I have seen christians worshipping idol of jesus which makes me realize these missionaries are here using their religion to convert religion and making it some kind of business. Also the main point every religion has both good and bad things. Thus converting someone's religion is not good idea. But I have to say people should blame the caste system first then christian missionaries. Christian missionaries targets our country for conversion because of discrimination. Discrimination needs to be controlled then christian missionaries.

Also if someone has no interest to that religion and doesnot want to change their religion but still told or forced to change and follow it, that's bad . That is why government allows personal conversion but won't allow anyone to encourage or force others to change religion. You know why christians has bad reputation in Nepal ? Because of this forceful conversion as well as how they badmouth and disrespect other religion as well as native cultures which has got nothing to do with any kind of bad customs in Nepal .But I haven't seen any Christian not understanding this law and then complain about it. Many information about Nepal in this video seems to be portrayed with minimum research which includes Buddhisim and Hunduisim being adopted by Nepal from Tibet or from India. First of all Buddha was born in Nepal which leads us to the conclusion that Buddhisim started from Nepal and other country adopted the religion. Second of all Nepal and India shares a long history of Hindu God and goddess living in the high himalayas of Nepal and a godess born in Nepal(current Nepal) getting married to a god from India (current India). therefore Nepal is the place of origin of two major religion Hinduism and Buddhism. Seeing people wanting to eliminate its existence from the place of origin makes my heart cry... though people lifestyle has changed after converting the religion but taking advantage of there vulnerability and asking them to change religion will only spread hatred towards the religion itself.

In South Korea there were no Christian 200 years ago. Now 30% of the population identified themselves Christians. So did Christianity destroy Korean culture and identity? Not at all. Today Korea is regarded as symbol of democracy and economic growth and colorful cultures while people enjoy religious freedom. So it is not very relevant to identify national identity with specific religion.

Christianity do not change culture, it preserve the culture of that place. Just reminding, unlike muslims who identify their religion with Arab culture and Hindus who identify themselves with Indo-aryan culture, Christianity does not identify itself with any culture ( though majority of the western countries are Christians) you can find Christians in India with their own culture, in Ethiopia with their own distinct culture and church, the same is for every country, Why? Because Christianity blends in and strengthen the culture of that country/place , in fact, missionaries have done a lot of things to preserve the local culture. But of course, someone who has already made up their minds in hating Christianity, nothing can convince.

It all happened because this religion and their books are easily accessible. This is our mistake that we did not realize the importance of our religion. Bhagwad gita has solution to every problem but no one bother to read it because it's either old fashioned or they are not aware of its importance. Church has a gathering on every Sunday wherein they teach some or the other things to their people but when it comes to hindu/buddhist, we do not do that and we expect teenagers or youngsters to not to get influenced with christianity. Christianity is becoming a trend now, it is a fashion for youngsters to become christian. We are not in sync with teenagers and youngsters and it is gradually leading towards the extinction of our culture and religion.

@@vishvapradhan8476According to Christian belief, Jesus' mission was not limited to the Jewish people. While he was born into a Jewish family and his ministry initially focused on the Jewish community, the message of Jesus, as presented in the New Testament, extends to all people. Christians believe that Jesus came as the Savior of all humanity, offering salvation and forgiveness of sins to everyone who believes in him, regardless of their ethnic or cultural background. This inclusive message is evident in various passages in the New Testament, including the Great Commission in Matthew 28:19-20, where Jesus instructs his disciples to go and make disciples of all nations.

Christianity says God will heal you and God gave you these expensive things Nepalese culture is a culture of Dharma which says only you can heal yourself, and that you need to do by going on a deep spiritual journey giving up your desires to things and materials. Nepali culture says there's God in everything and everyone as God is not a single entity, it's inside you, it's inside the rock, it's in the river, it's in the hills etc. Christianity says there's one and only God and follow him no matter what You can't keep nepali culture if you follow Christianity, it's simply impossible. It might be hard for westerners to understand but the concept of religion is very different here in India and Nepal than it is elsewhere. It's not simply a matter of which God you pray to. If it was simply that, then Hindus have millions of gods, adding one more God I.e. Jesus on the books would be no big deal.

Hinduism maybe wonderful in its cultural, artistic and social aspects. But spiritually, historically, even logically, even Hindus themselves would prefer to become atheist than address the truths of Hinduism. Most everybody are just superficial in their religion, but only in Christianity can you delve deepest than any religion without being conflicted by its truth. @@samshyam5347 Nepalese aren't slaves to your religion or culture! They have right to choose their way of life. If they choose to follow Jesus you should respect them. Like in any civilized country

I respect jesus and musa and all of them but dont you dare to ask me to be christian muslim or jews. Because as a hindu I respect everybody but the day I become abrahmic i will lose respect to every religion except the one i chose to be part. So it would be really great for all the abrahmic religion to have a hindu neighbour for peaceful and atmosphere. Can these cgristian missi9naries go to pakistan or any muslim country and try the same thing? Just because we respect you it doesnt mean you will trap our poor and weak people to your religion in lieu of money.
