Not "any" kid, but specifically the timid ones that hate violence. Other kids would be excited to fight in a giant robot, and would never back down the opportunity to pilot it, until they experience the horrors first hand.

You're absolutely right. People do not take into account that he's a 14-year old boy with esteem issues. Most children (plus adults) in real life are not going to react well to receiving a task to save the world when that means they have to fight and possibly get killed in battle. But then of course, Shinji was their only choice aside from an injured Rei at that time, still a screwed up situation along with everything else in the series

Imagine you're a kid. Imagine your estranged father who works for the government suddenly calls you to visit him at the base after so many years. Then imagine that as soon as you see him he tells you to hop into a fighter jet and do an assault run against an enemy unit that's just survived everything else they tried to throw at it. Shinji was never a coward. He was just an innocent child.

Seeing this scene again, it’s so fucked up…

GET IN THE EVA, SHINJI! In all seriousness, I never saw the series in its original dub, so this was my first time seeing the original series, but my first time seeing anything Evangelion related was the first two films in the Rebuild of Evangelion movies

"The Artificial Human Evangelion" And people say Eva didn't have any foreshadowing or reveals.

Honestly I think Netflix’s release was gone way too hard on, every character has a perfect voice. From shinji’s voice being high pitched and immature to asuka’s voice being high pitched, fast, and bitchy. On top of that the screams that come from shinji in the Netflix version are unironically terrifying.

I'm sorry man respectfully I disagree. But please note I know it's because I'm an old head. But you have to ubderstand the attachemnt we all have to this show. Evangellion was the first anime I ever watched. Stumbled across it by accident. One late night.I was like 10 at the time. On sbs or abc in Australia in the late 90s. I had no idea what the fuck was going on. Obviously. But because I'd never seen anything like it. from animation I was just captivated. Anything other than the orrignal dub. Is fucking jarring to me. I cannot get into it cause I cannot get past. That's not shinjis voice. I'm sure if I didn't have my attachment to the orriginal the new one would be fine. I'm sure there's probably things that are better about thus dub. But nostalgia is a painful heartstring to tug on, is all I'm saying.

I'm sure this has been dubbed differently to the way it was originally done. I'm sure the first time I saw this in the ADV dubbing, Shinji was whining much more about how his dad didn't give a shit about him until he wanted him. There was the understandable dread and fear, sure, but it was less about "How the hell do you expect me to do that?" and more about "OMG DADDY LOVE ME!!!" This version actually makes it a little more understandable that he's been confronted with a situation where it relies on him to jump in a giant robot and save the world, and Shinji is understandably like "The fuck? I literally just got here and I'm a child?!"

Actually cognitively shinji is aware of what is going on despite given such a short notice and limited information. That makes him way better then 90% of whichever Idealistic shounen protagonist derived from most series.

I’m crucial to the original dub but this is actually the first place I saw the full series, now lemme just say, Amino is more Toxic than Reddit, they dissed this dub

I have a confession to make.. i became depressed back then when i watched this anime 😅😅😅😅😅😅 this anime messed up with my head good 😂

One of my favorite moments in all anime. Shinji's reluctance to fight was so real, man. Like just imagining that situation for myself gives me so much anxiety lol i was hooked from that first episode just at how Shinji showed emotions like fear, anxiety, lonliness and depression. Only to watch him grow into a selfless, fearless, pilot

You can’t really say that unless you see one standing infront of you. It’s like looking down front a really tall bridge or building, Some people get jitters while others don’t. And some find it Fun. Eva’s are GINORMOUS. I personally wouldn’t want to go in a Eva but if the Situation was properly explained to me and I understood that I had no other choice and that I could Die (A Hero), I’d stick some Adrenaline in my veins and Pilot the Damn thing. I’d be Hesitant but I’ll do it to the Best of my Abilities.
