Neodrives Hub Motors-Cycle Con 2023 Booth Interview

Yves tell us why Neodrives believe rear hub motors are a better choice for trikes than mid-drive motors. Then he shows us the inside of their motor to demonstrate the simplicity and quality of this German built system.

No wear on the chain and sprockets is really neat. And while re-gen doesn't do much of anything for battery strength it does keep the brake system much cooler and less used.

Where was this booth??? I walked every inch of the show and didn't see this booth! Dang!!!

Hub drives are the best. They maintain the three rings up front also. When my age and ability require a motor…this is the way to go. Can you provide website, US dealers and approximate cost? This really caught my attention.

Okay, now there's hope for my future aspirations to ride my trike with a hub drive.

Put one hub motor on each wheel, rear optimized for torque and climbing, front optimized for top speed on the flat. You have to have a controller that'll balance power to each wheel for different speeds and conditions. Has this been done before? Can I be granted a certificate for the first one coming up with this idea? ; )

I have seen a manufacturer for upright two-wheeled fatbikes with two motors and a few people playing around. Seen Trikes with two motors in the front wheels and only chain to the rear wheel. Duo Quest had two motors in the front and two chain drives (two riders) in the rear, I think. Katanga (WAW and Pony4) had a prototype with four motors for their upcoming VM45 project, I think. I am sure, trike with three motors must exist, but is so rarely usefull and the controlling Is so complicated… And probably not very efficient, but veeerry heavy - and expensive 😆 TrikExplor has a quad with a single mid drive, that can distribute the sum of pedal and motor drive to all four wheels. 😉

Quality hub motor: Easiest E-assist for pre-owned bike/trike keeping desired 2-3 bottom bracket chainrings. Easiest E-assist for transfer to one's other bike/trike.

They mostly only talked about the general benefits of a direct drive rear hub motor and an empty claim of German quality (Hello from Germany by the way!) and barely mentioned a torgue sensor and integrated controller? I think those would have been interesting.

I have a Scorpion FS26 with a Copenhagen Wheel and a Dumont with a Falco. Both are torque sensing. I’m curious to see how they compare with this Neodrives hub.

Hmm, looked up the Grin all Axle and compared it to this motor.. seems the Grin Hub is more efficient and the same weight. I was thinking due to the more hollow design of this motor, it would be lighter.

Aren't they all that hollow? This one seems to include a torgue sensor and I don't know if the integrated controller is something that others also have or what normally is the external controller.

  • @neptronix

@@PsyKeks Nope, not all hollow. Also, most motors that have internal controllers end up with the controller getting cooked from the heat; at best they reduce the thermal headroom of the motor by producing heat inside the motor.. So internal controllers are not a plus. External controllers are much more common. You could install a torque sensor aftermarket in the crank if you can find a controller that supports it

Neodrives make very good motors, I have been using one for years. However, early on, (when they supplied ICE Trikes), they would not talk to customers, only dealers. My first controller developed a software problem, ICE no longer fit Neodrives, and I have not been able to get an update. There is now another supplier in the UK, from whom I have got a new complete set-up, at one third of the cost of the original. At some point I will have to see if I can get an up-date from them, to get my first system running again. Lesson: The controller holds the software; It disconnects from the battery if not used for 2 days, reset from the battery. If you leave the system disconnected for too long, the controller's back-up battery runs down, and you get software problems. Re-set the system at least once a month. Find out when you buy your system where you can get up-dates from. In 6 or 7 years time. . . . Thank you Gary!

Direct drive hub motors also have disadvantages: lots of "unsprung mass", that reduces the quality of rear suspension, that can be important on tadpole trikes, because loss of traktion can lead to accidents quicky. Heaviest kind of motor. Some resistance when coasting / riding with the assistance turnt off or not funktioning. Least efficient, because of low rpm (small wheels may help a bit), that only in parts gets offset be regenetative braking. (And again on the rear wheel of a tadpole you must be careful with braking for danger of accidents.)
