I guess he needed some more groundwork, before being ridden.

He’s had groundwork out the Wazzu Learned to tolerate just about everything, he just don’t want it. He’s an older Mustang been allowed to just be wild and not trained he’s not letting go very easy… well, actually the few seconds he put up a fight before giving up. I guess you could call easy because after this day, he hasn’t bucked again knock on wood

He was mostly doing alright there until he looked back. Something about seeing the rider behind/above him must have been scary. But he did a pretty good job working through it even though he reared. He very easily could've taken off bucking but he didn't

I assume the old guy in the saddle is expendable being he has lived most of his life out allowing the youngster to live another day. That old guy is a hand. Good job cowboy! Your every move was right on. Could have got crazy but didn't. Wish we could have seen more.

This horse was NOT prepared to be ridden! Had he had any work at all on walk, trot, canter, whoa, yield to the leg, etc? I really doubt it. The horse should have gotten a lot of "human touching him all over" and jumping up and down beside him for weeks before he was ever mounted. All you did was scare him. Congratulations.

What we did is (un) scare him, and it only took about 7 to 10 seconds to work him through it. he did have one more panic attack. with about the same amount of time to work through it. So I would say 14 seconds paid pretty good dividends. He very easily could’ve walked out and not done anything. He has had way more work than you suspect but he’s a seven or eight year old wild Mustang and the trust comes slowly. some horses are just wound way tighter than others. If you train very many horses you know there’s no guarantee when you throw your leg over their back there are inherent risks, starting horses, no matter what you do. Day two he’s accepted cues being given from his back, and has begun his journey to become a real horse.
